Unemployment Extension: Tier 5 Demand and What 99ers Are Experiencing – The demand for a Tier 5 unemployment extension bill continues. Millions of 99ers are continuously losing their homes, their food, their savings, and all of their resources just to survive during these hard times.
The Situation of 99ers
It’s not that they are just couch potatoes as what others are saying. It’s really hard to get a job right now. This is a fact as evidenced by the amount of comments that we usually get here. Hundreds of 99ers are telling their stories on how they tried their best to send out resumes to several companies but to no avail.
Apparently, their condition aggravates their situation. How can they concentrate on the duty of looking for work if they worry that they won’t have a roof over their head because their house is foreclosed, a phone and electricity that may be disconnected because of non payment of utility bills, etc.
Who’s to Blame?
These unemployed individuals suffer through no fault of their own but through the fault of the top executives of huge Wall Street firms. Through the wrong management and decisions of their executives, these Wall Street companies triggered the recession causing a domino effect of huge debts, foreclosures, and bankruptcies. Ultimately, average employee suffers because of mass layoffs while these executives are enjoying their vacations using their fat paychecks.
In addition, the government can also be the subject of scrutiny in this problem. They should have been more frugal in spending the budget prioritizing the disposal of funds to address the most important concerns. They have spent billions to bail out Wall Street companies in the brink of bankruptcy and on two wars but no one worried about the bugdet deficit.
What Happens Next?
If our politicians, particularly the Republicans, do not pass a Tier 5 Unemployment Extension Bill, more and more 99ers will suffer. There will be chaos and crime rates will shoot up in the fight for survival. Social welfare agencies and others who have kind hearts may temporarily adopt the children of these unemployed. Ultimately, there might be a revolution in Washington if this continues for a longer term.
The Senate Elections on November 2:
Of course, the fate of this Tier 5 Unemployment Extension Bill relies on the hands of our politicians. This coming November 2, 37 of the 100 seats in Congress will be filled in with new faces. Since the population of these unemployed 99ers constitute a huge portion of the American voters, they may vote out all who are against in the passage of this unemployment bill.
Fortunately, there are two Senators who have expressed their support in passing this bill – Senator Charles Schumer from New York and Sen. Debbie Stabenow from Michigan, both are Democrats. Will their voice be heard in the Congress? Let’s all hope and pray that more and more will support this bill for the 99ers.
The Call for Tier 5 Continues
Several organizations have set up petitions to call for a Tier 5 Unemployment Extension Bill. Letters, emails, and phone calls have been made to state senators to get their support. A video for this campaign has been made available below.
The American people including myself is having a HARD time understanding how the repubs can let their own suffer like this through NO fault of their own…This is just outrageous and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know “STOP SENDING MONIES TO AFGANISTAN AND OTHER COUNTRIES AND TAKE CARE OF THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK YARD FIRST” The repubs are ALL VENDICTIVE people that will pay at the polls..Does these repubs care about the November elections???? What is the senate waiting for. Are they so removed from real people that they don’t see what is happening out here. I will take any job. Why do we go to war against another country, send our sons, brothers, dads, uncles, cousins, nephews and so forth to destroy that country and then use OUR AMERICAN money to build it back up, but yet we have people over her sleeping in shelters (which by the way they are usually at full capacity) because they can’t find a job to be able keep a roof over their head. And it seems like the america we are so proud to be from would rather take care of other countries people instead of just turning around and looking right in their own back yard where there are people begging for their help. Tier V is absolutely needed today. These are the hardest times for 99ers since their/our only financial support has been exhausted. We are, for the most part, over 50 and under accepted among many businesses due to younger persons competing for the same positions.
Until new jobs are available for more workable Americans we need assistance to maintain our financial needs. Many people don’t realize that the 99ers are not looking for hand-outs but hand-help. Afterall, these benefits are our insured monies we worked for over many years of employment.
Please pass the Tier V asap!!!
I totally agree with you, I too am over 50 and have worked for over 25 years. When I try to apply for a job either I don’t hear back or I’m over qualified. . . It’s not about making the big bucks an hour now, A job is a job! In the process of losing my job I have lost my home and I don’t know where to turn. I’m not a drug addict, achoholic, mentally disturbed, so I don’t qualify for welfare, What is wrong with AMERICA? We need to get the ones in the Washington out of office and put someone in who is sensitive to our needs. They’re making the big bucks so they can’t possibly feel our pain. . . what do we do? We need that Tier 5 NOW!

We the 99’s as you call us need help. I have been unemployed since Feb. 2008 and have exhausted my 99 weeks of unemployment in April of 2010. We need a Tier 5 unemployment extension, I have applied for thousands of jobs over the last 2 years, I am not a lazy person and I apply for jobs on a daily basis, all I want to do is work and be able to pay my bills. I applied for an $8.00 an hour job and was told they could not accept my application because I was unemployed???…Then I came across at least 4 other company’s that said no employment gaps and would not accept my application, what do you have to have a job to be able to apply now???
Here are my experiences to this point. I went to the DHS office for food assistance and received $16.00 a month assistance in which I was supposed to receive $376.00 a month, it took my case worker 3 months to get it straight and I finally received the correct payment and I am grateful for that, also I was told that I could receive assistance on my electric bill in which I applied for it, so far it has been 3 months and I have made weekly trips to the DHS office and have made at least 100 phone calls to my case worker and left messages explaining that nothing has been paid. Every time I go to the office may caseworker says he will take care of it and it never happens, also I asked for cash assistance and he won’t even acknowledge it. He has NEVER answered his phone once in the hundreds of times that I have called and has NEVER returned a message.
DTE energy has shut off my power 2 times in the last year…had to pay a $200 deposit each time to get it turned back on. They have $475.00 in deposits and tell me that I have to make 12 months of payments on time before they will refund any back, they also charged a reconnection fee of $40.00 to reconnect the gas meter in which they never disconnected each time, I can understand a reconnection fee for the electric meter cause that’s what they turn off.
Once the power is turned off the city gives you 3 days to turn it back on or they condemn the house, remove you and padlock the door so you can’t get back in.
I have paid taxes to this state for 32 years and this is the first time I have ever asked for any assistance and I am completely appalled as to how I have gotten treated from this government agency and don’t understand how I cannot get a return call when it is now approaching 4 months
since April 2010.

I’m not proud to be a 99er, I unfortunately with millions of others got caught in this terrible time without employment. It’s hard to find a job. I’m a professional, a skilled worker for over 30 years I have worked hard. In fact I’m volunteering my services right now. I’m a architect. People right now are taking advantage of my free ervice because they say they don’t have the money to pay me. I’ve been doing drawings for various towns in my area. They say they love my work, but they don’t have the funds to pay me. What am I to do. I love to work and keep busy, but I have no income. I’ve voted several times and more for the republican party and now their stabbing me in the back. They don’t know how it is, becasue their not doing their job. They say the 99ers are lazy, no!! We are not lazy. We are many, we are millions of good hard working people who just want to work again. Do you think we want to lose our homes? Do you think we want to starve? Do you think that my best friend wanted to commit sucide? No!! We want to work, people are losing their homes, families, friends. Just because the republicans want to play their games. They have no heart, because they sit in their mansions just like the people on Wall street and laugh at the people that are in trouble. Let’s put a stop to this now! We are millions strong. I don’t know why so many blame only the republicans for this mess. obama spent a trillion dollars of our money last year guaranteeing that he would create millions and millions of jobs. Time to stop playing politics on both sides. I will vote republican this November for one reason only. We have to stop the spending of the dems. It is out of control.
Again…I am reiterating here, why these older people, who are parents of immigrants are getting monetary asistance of between $600 to $1000 per month as long as they are alive- THESE PEOPLE HAVE NOT CONTRIBUTED A CENT in our system!
But if a 99er & a senior like myself should ask the SSI for help, they won’t extend it! I’ve worked my as…off & paid my dues for more than 45 years and they are not helping me- they would rather help foreign seniors. By the way…SSI is a unit of Social Security- and the main reason why their funds are being depleted faster!

I am one of the 99ers. I have already lost my place to live. I have nothing. As like evryone else when you go on an interview and they ask why you havnt been working? Gee because no jobs are here and i am overqualified or the job goes to some one younger with less exspierience. My license is now expired. My pharm tech certification has expired. No car insurance and was servered a summons to go to court for a 700.00 dollar credit card. I cant afford new glasses and without them i can not see. I read of a politician who wants to drug test everyone collecting unemployment if tier 5 is approved. He needs to start at the washington level and see how many of them are doing what every other american might be doing to keep from loosing our minds. Is he seriouse!!!! We are not junkie alcoholics. We built this country we can tear it down and rebuild. Im tired of being bashed when these same people are taking care of evry one else around us and not our own babies. Why shouldnt we vote them out and take evrything away from them as they have with us and we can watch them as they try to survive? They will be the cry babies. I would like to say I hope you senators enjoy your month off for vacation that we pay for as we that have no money cause of you suffer. Am, really disappointed by what happen fighting for the unemployment extension bill and only to be left behind with no lifeline what so ever. My unemployment benefit was exhausted in May when they did that last extension of six weeks. Am now homeless now am all the way in the system of being homeless not part of it but all of it. What are you suppose to do now? When you have lost, everything you ever own now congress is going on vacation this month now that millions that have lost everything that they own because we cannot find jobs. No money, no job, no home age and kids does not matter

I know three people who’s Unemployment Benefits have expired (Tier 5). As soon as they expired they found jobs. They also told me they refused to look for work while receiving benefits.

Bill, maybe you hang out with the exception, rather than the rule. Taking responsibility for one’s life does not guarantee they can find work when there is one job for every 5 seekers, by the Department of Labor and mainstream media’s account. Do the math:
5 seekers (S) for every 1 job (J) =
5(S) = 1 (J) = 1/5 = .20

This is NOT the American dream!
I’ve worked all of my life and supported a disabled husband and 2 children. Had a nice home and a decent car but now everything is gone! My husband passed away years ago and my children have there own families to support.
Now that I’m 55 and should be counting down the years to retirement I can’t! The only counting down I will do are the days left before I am homeless!
This is a sad state of affairs when your own government cares more about citizens of other countries before their own!
No jobs for the 50 and over! Too qualified! Credit score to get a job…what credit after exhausting UI benefits! Too young to retire and too old to be hired!

The President painted a beautiful picture of the economy and danced his way around all the questions! Of course we the 99er’s were NEVER mentioned! That would have been bad for their ratings! No one wants to hear about people losing everything and having to live in the street with their children!

We 99er’s have not gotten a penny since March. There is many applicants for each position that may be open, but if you are past 50, you cannot get an interview. Please help us to survive and not lose our homes, cars, etc.
I already wrote what I wa thinking on here and they erased it. Why is there no coverage on the news on TV. While Hard Working Americans are becoming Homeless, falling into Poverty, and Starvation we are being swept under the rug. Lets let these Senators go and enjoy their months vacation. Lets let the illigal Mexicans over the border to suck on our system that they have not paid into. Lets fund these undeclared wars that are killing our sons and daughters and costing trillions. I think what our senators/president/all involved are doing to us right now is called treason. They are turning their backs on the “real” people who need help. They are harming us and don’t seem to think anything about what they are doing to this nation. Bailing out the system that put most of us in this mess and dropping billions of dollars into other countries while saying to the citizens of this country “sorry, but we can’t help you because we gave away too much money already and don’t want to add to this countries debt”. I believe that is treason…don’t do intentional harm to your own country. What have our politicians done…they actually rewarded the institutions who screwed all of us over with their out right greed. It is just mind boggling to me how this is happening in the United States. How they are holding us all hostage and don’t seem to give a damn about it at all.
As long as American business is allowed to operate outside the country, and beat taxes and minimum wages, (18,000 businesses just in Mexico alone) there will always be crushing unemployment. Take the Chinese products out of Walmart, and you’ll have a can of coffee. And Walmart is subsidized to death. Hit them all with tariffs so high, it’ll pay to operate in the US.
Make sure you remember who let you suffer in this time of need. Come November, whether they’re Republican or Democrat, I will not vote for any of these people if a Tier 5 is not introduced and passed soon.
As a 27 year old man, who has only himself to take care of, it’s very hard. I can only imagine how hard it must be for people who have children to support. It disgusts me the way our so-called representatives can sit there and ignore us. Good luck to everybody in finding a job, we need it.
I have no faith in our government. Everything I have worked for has disappeared. No job, medical and dental insurance has taken all the joy out of living. I am barely living on what I have. I would like to throw all of those fat, wealthy blood suckers out on the street without pay and pension. They want to take their vacation soon, well, how would it look if we hired new people for their positions to accomplish more for us in August. Wouldn’t that be funny? I still have hope and pray something will happen soon. I emailed my Congressman and Senator in Illinois but have not received any response, they must be packing for their vacation. GOD BLESS AMERICA.
I was appalled watching *The View* today. What propaganda…The only person that actually even attempted to approach this crisis was Elizabeth. The President didn’t want to address the *thorns*~ Instead he went about showing the viewers the *roses*.

I’m sure he wasn’t concerned when he took his children biking on a short vacation. Who actually does care about us Americans? A handful of politicians perhaps…the rest…will meet their fate at the polls come November. I will make sure I stand outside of My polling station and hand out the list of the Senators, Congressmen that have caused this chaos. I do hope they find the unemployment situation as intolerable as we all do. It’s near criminal what is happening.

The 99′ers are highly educated people that want to work and even if most of the jobs don’t require such extensive resumes, but, the problem is that no one will hire these people bcse there are 6 people for 1 job and the employers will take the later bcse thats when it becomes a liability….Give us a job and at least to buy food, pay mortgages/rent OR give us some stability until we become employable…But first, stop taking care of other countries and the illegals and take care of the PEOPLE that put you in your positions…It’s NOT that difficult unless the Republicans continue to make it so….NOVEMBER IS COMING…!!!!
I’ve worked since I was a teenager. Now, with the recession and companies not hiring, what are we to do? I apply every day for jobs. I’m 52 years old, you know what that means. I don’t care what companies say, their preference is not to hire a “mature” applicant. Mainly, insurance rates are higher. So what are we to do? Please, President Obama and Congress support a Tier 5 extension so we have some peace of mind and continue to search for work. We’ve been out of work the longest. It’s scares me to wake up in the morning, thinking, “Will someone give me the chance to work again ?” “Will I be able to retire ?” “Is this the American Dream?” I’m single, self-supporting, have a home, bills and a very small family support system. It’s no way to live when I want to work and worked all my adult life. This country sends billions of dollars overseas. Give us a chance. Thank you.

Unemployment assistance monies should be paid to EVERYONE that is unemployed from this recession that was previously employed.
And it would seem LOGICAL that the people unemployed the longest should get assistance FIRST as they were the first ones on the battle lines to get hurt.
And it is pretty evident that consumer spending started to decline a few months ago when the 99ers and other lost their unemployment income.
It doesn’t take a GENIUS Mr/Mrs. POLITICIAN to figure out that if you keep up the unemployment checks for those who need it that the MONEY GOES RIGHT INTO THE SYSTEM and keeps the economy healthy and will eventually create jobs.
The key is you need to keep it up without THE GAPS. Mr./Mrs. POLITICIAN is now going to take 6 weeks off for ANOTHER VACATION and then when they come back they will be busy campaigning for office.
That should be declared ILLEGAL and UNCONSTITUTIONAL when this country is currently in crisis mode in many areas.

I am a 99er. I’m not interested in Tier 5 Unemployment Compensation. I am interested in a job. At 59 years old, with over 35 years experience in IT, I can’t even get an interview. However, Barack Obama will be handing out an additional 65,000 H1-B visas in October to allow foreigners into this country to take hi-tech jobs. There’s already a quarter of a million H1-B types already here.
President Obama said he was going to put a stop to the movement of American jobs to foreigners. In the words of that great American, Joe Wilson, “You lie”.
The Company I worked for has hundreds of H1-B and Green Card employees hired over the last few years. They are employed here in the United States taking jobs that could (and should) be handled by American Citizens.
The Republicans let this happen during the Bush administration, and we voted those turds out of office in 2008. The Democrats don’t seem to have gotten the message, so let’s throw these bums out this coming November. Eventually, some one will get a clue.
I agree with you on the work visa’s. I live here in Bentonville, AR at the home of Wal-Mart and just down the street from their David Glass building where they do alot of their IT work. The majority of employees are Indian decent here on visa’s. I find it very ANTI American to allow your own to do with out to save a penny. I understand that businesses have to be profitable but Come ON …. Wal-Mart realy? From what I have read on work visa’s they actually have it worse in New Jersey and they are actually training them and sending them back to India with the job. The visa that you have listed on here is just one of many I’m sure you know so it’s alot worse than most know. I think more should know about this to maybe help combat the unemployment rate.
I have been out of work since Oct. 2008, through no fault of my own. I used to work at salary for 54 hrs. per week, with no overtime. Only an occasional bonus for exceeding production when the company could afford to reward us with a small bonus or perk. Now, I spend 60+ hrs. per week to find some sort of work to support my family. And it goes beyond the frustration of competing desparately for jobs. The humiliation, worry whether the kids will eat next week, having to say no to most requests for minor favors that are out of the budget, the loss of faith that children have for their parents. And this could turn into a litany. I’m 60 years old, in excellent health, and could outwork most 35 yr. olds on a bad day.
The Congress and the Senate, are in session approximately 16 hrs. per week, and rely on overpopulated staff members to do the backoffice work, while lunching with the thieves who caused this mess.
One thing I’m sure of, those REPUBLICAN WILL NEVER GET MY VOTE AGAIN. I’d rather vote for a stick. I’m not an Obama fan, but the nerves they have to deny benefits for the unemployed and subtly indicate that he is responsible for the situation. As far as I am concerned, the unemployment rate is much higher they want to admit. All that money to the banks?!
I lost my job in 2008 after my bosses stole all the company money to build big houses buy big cars amoung other things. When they did this my commission checks bounced which inturne bounced checks I wrote leaving me oweing hundreds of dollars and now way to pay the checks. I then got taken to court for bouncing checks I then got convicted now I have 2 misterminors and 3 felonies. Nothing happen to my old employers. I am now on 2 yrs. Probation have thousands of dallars in lwyer fees fines and costs and I’m out 25,000 in commission my old company owes me.I can go after them and they threaten to file bankruptcy. Do you know how hard it is to find a job with this kind of record and I’m 40. My husband lost his job and his company is fighting his unemployment so neither one of us is getting any unemployment. And we has a family of 6 to support. Until now I was only off work when I gave bith to our kids and my husband has out of work a totaly of 1 month snce he was 16. You tell me what are we supposed to do?
All of us who are suffering are proud American people who dedicated their lives to their families and their country. We don’t have to make excuses to anyone. Got to stand tall and fight back. No one can take who we are away from us. It looks like we are going to have to go back to bartering to keep alive. Where are the rich and famous movie actors and celebrities who got rich off of us and spend money and their time to help other countries to be showy and get in the media. Where are they for their own people. I don’t hear them say a word and make a stand for us and speak out. I guess we aren’t in the news enough to warrant their attention. Maybe they are waiting for another hurricane to run and get into the news to sell movie tickets. I don’t think it was a good time for the Clinton Wedding either to spend millions for all the fat cats to indulge themselves. In these bad times, it is the wrong image to put out there. Another time possibly would have been better. I know parents want the best for their children, if they can afford it, but this is the wrong time. It is an example of spitting in the faces of the stricken in America.
Another point is that I have been trying to learn a new skill to compete for a job. State Agencies blocked my way patronizing me for over a year. Ignored me until it made me sick not considering that I am important too. I made it known to everyone what they have done. They don’t deserve having a job when they don’t know how to do it or deal with people professionally. Swap out the dead wood for those who will work and do a good job by using their expertise and experience. The Republicans are sickening and have done us an injustice. They are stalling until this will be totally out of control and can’t be fixed. Mr. President we need you to put Tier 5 through. Give us time to get on our feet to support our country and keep it well and thriving. This country belongs to the people, not politicians. Bring us jobs before cutting us off. We will become a 3rd World country if something isn’t done to put it back in the hands of the people and hear our voices.
Tier V is definitely needed. No doubt. I believe we are in a depression, not a recession. For sure. I also believe that there is grave age discrimination occuring in all of this and nothing is going to change that, even though I believe it is supposedly “illegal” to inquire one’s date of birth on a job application. So much for that with applying on the internet. Also, what chance has someone got to get any job if it is also legal for employers to discriminate against the “unemployed”?! This for me is the most disgusting tactic of all? What possible explanation can be had for that practice? It ought to be outlawed as well. Then there’s the practice of running a credit check on applicants. Well, there goes most of us out the window! So what is left? Over 50, over-qualified, horrible credit score, and unemployed almost 2 years. That adds up to NO CHANCE IN HELL of getting hired in this country at this time! And so there it is…we are screwed no matter if Tier V goes through or not because it too will run out in time. It may be too late for us, guys. I really just have about given up any hope of ever having a normal life (i.e., a job, decent income, security) again. Most days lately I just sit and watch TV and feel like hiding in a hole and never coming out….

I can’t support voting out just one side. I think we should look at the canidate and vote based off them not being a relative of a seat holder, previous seat holder, wont sleep in their elected seat, who will not support another country before it’s own, who will enforce our laws and help stop setting a bad example by sueing our own. I think I kind of got my point accross even though it’s alot worse. I beleive that we need to set an example and replace them all. They give their friends and family priority over what the American people want. I think this will settle the blame game if we just get rid of them all!
I have been unemployed since July, 2008 and I have been on interviews for what pure waste of time. I am a 57 year old women who lived in Florida for a change and now I am back to NYC due to no tier 5. I am sick of filling out applications going on interview with no response. I know I can’t give up and I will not give up but I can tell you I am on the welfare line because you leave me no choice.
