Unemployment Extension July 20, 2010 Update: The Call for Tier 5 – A lot of unemployed Americans are now expecting the much awaited unemployment bill to be passed within this week. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin already appointed Carte Goodwin to replace the late Senator Richard Byrd to complete the needed 60 votes.
Carte Goodwin is scheduled to be sworn in the Senate on Tuesday at 2:15 pm and then immediately after, at 2:30, they will begin voting on the unemployment extension bill. That vote will be on a motion to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed. Once that passes, a cloture motion on the bill itself will be in order for Thursday morning. After that, another vote on the “motion to concur in the House amendment to the Senate amendment to the bill with Reid Amendment No. 4425” will be voted within 30 hours before it can send over to the House of Representatives for the final vote and finally lined up for Obama‘s signature.
Since Goodwin is a Democrat, it is expected that his vote will add to the Democrats to counter the leading Republican filibuster. Republicans continue to counter the passage of the bill since according to them, there’s not much enough funds and that it could just add a burden to the fiscal deficit of the government.
For the record, H.R. 4213 will be the unemployment extension bill that will be voted upon. This is not a Tier 5 unemployment bill. However, this bill proposes to extend the filing deadline for existing tiers (Tiers 1- 4) of unemployment benefits until November 30, 2010 and extend for three month the closing deadline for first-time home buyers looking to get the $8,000 tax credit.
The Government has used billions of its funds in bailing out Wall Street companies notwithstanding other funds diverted in various military operations in other countries. The unemployment extension bill must be passed immediately. Do we still have to wait when crime becomes an issue because Americans need to survive just to catch the attention of our dear politicians?

Our highways need cleaned. Why not make people that have been on unemployment for a long time now, get out for 5 to 10 hours a week and clean our highways and actually earn the money for the unemployment checks.

My taxes I have paid into for 16 years pays for my unemployment. That’s why we work and pay taxes. And I pay my taxes on my unemployment. I feel sorry for you.
Do you honestly believe that unemployment is just a hand out from the government? That we who have worked for over 30 yrs and for the first time find ourselves unemployed, that we should clean highways to earn our unemployment check? That money has been deducted from our pay checks every week, year after year. It belongs to the unemployed. It is not welfare.

For now, instead of going on forums and posting useless comments, do some research on our Government, where the Unemployment Money comes from (our paychecks when we were employed as well as our previous employers) It’s a tax for a reason…So that when people do lose their jobs at no fault of their own…the money that has been contributed to an Unemployment “Escrow” fund is available.
Take a look at the real time US Debt figures, where the rest of our tax payer funds are being spent…That is if you can pull yourself away from YOUTUBE for a moment or two

Oh yea… I’m a 57 year old women with arthritis in my knees. My work has been generating FUTA since its inception. After 39 years of being a bookkeeper and making sure people like you get paid on time, you now want me to hobble along the roads, smelling the smog and wearing an orange vest and pick up your trash in order to buy food? Right. Don’t look at me to physically bail everyone out by sending 10 hours a day in the 110 degree summer heat just because the unemployment bean counters didn’t set the FUTA rates correctly or the republicans put us in this budget debt scenario. Oh, and if you are thinking, it’s just the young ones that you were actually meaning — well, most of them — out of college or high school — they were never on unemployment — they haven’t found this first qualifying job yet. I have been unemployed since oct 2008 and that has been my question a number of times. Why cant I go and clean the side of the roads for even minimum wage? The answer is the prisoners are virtually free labor! So while the get three hots and a cot and work nearly free for the state I lost the home I finished paying for, Lost my car that I finished paying for and now I live in the streets! So yeah , Why couldn’t I clean the sides of the road and at least be able to pay my basic living cost like car insurance , water And Electric bill ! I never asked for A free ride and its not my fault that My Bosses Business failed , but I do blame the state for not allowing Law abidding citizens to work when it was available.

Your narrow minded dispicable point of view sees the majority of unemployed as people who are all low life characters that have crawled out of the primordial soup, dumb, stupid, lazy, and who do not want to work for a living,go for an education. These people who are unemployed do not enjoy getting the door slammed in their face everytime they go out looking for work. There once was a Greek named “Narcuises”, who was so vain, that he fell in Love with his own stupid image every time he looked at himself in a mirror and thought that everyone out there was their for the purpose to serve him. Just to enlighent you a little bit, I am just one person among many who have multiple college degrees from several state accredited professional universitiesand have 90,000 invested in my education alone. I also have twenty five years of working both as an Electrical Engineer prior and as an IT Professional Applications Developer for a very large Health Insurance Corporation. I worked with high ranking senior managers for ten years. I was laid off with 200 other professional employees some of who were CIO’s, Executive Vice presidents and Senior managers from a very large professional health insurance provider organization due to a takeover by another larger corporporation. The other people who were laid off with me had Masters, Doctorates, Bachelors and other types of formal education. The reason why these people were laid off was due to Atenure and Age discrimination and not on account of the fact that they were not the best, for they were. Little do you realize how hard it is for a person who is over 55+ to try to land a new job? I have been on so many interviews already and the reason why I do not get hired was not on account of my Professionalism, Experience and Education, but on account of the fact that my Age which is over 55+. That is something I cannot do anything about. The same holds true for my other fellow workers who were also the best and older than me. The company considered us too old, and expensive. We were the backbone of the company in its hey day when they made millions. Today we were a liability, because we cost too much. I have one word to say before you pass judgement on anyone else, you better realize that there are thousands of people out there who are like me who are very well educated, have class and who are experienced. They have Master Degrees, Doctorates, Bachelor’s, and Associates. They include IT programmers, doctor’s, nurses,other health professionals, school teachers and other types of people who are true professionals and who are hurting real bad and do not have any money to keep their houses oor feed their kids. They are unemployed because there are no Jobs out there to be had. Get off your hgh horse and try placing your self in their shoes for a while and show a little compassion, respect for these people. The real cause of this problem is due to the Government’s lack of Financial DeRegulation, Wall Street,Greedy Banks like AIG, NAFTA and Outsourcing which has been eroding all the American jobs and economy all these years. PS. When gasoline was $4.65 a gallon, a lot of people said that their was a lack of Oil Supplies in America. Just think about how much free oil there is now in the Gulf of Mexico just bubbling out of the ground on the ocean floor.

I came across these postings just today. I am a single mother of 2 who has worked since I was 15. I have done some college and some tech schooling. I have worked most my life as an administrator. My last job I was at was a family owned business and because of the decline in business they let us go and are running it from their home on their own. I have looked every where for a job and I have been on many interviews. People are looking for someone with less experience, even though I told them I would take minimum wage. I am living with family now and barely being able to support my family. My sister was also laid off last summer and has been unemployed too. My Aunt and Uncle were furloed and my Grandmother had to retire. The unemployment is a huge problem. People are loosing everything. Where is our help. These stories should be posted everywhere so that people know what is really going. It should be in the news and on the radio for goodness sakes. Where are the rich donating money for Americans in need. Or do they only care about other countries, do we need to make a scene to be heard. And as to the ignorant people, I am truly happy you have a job and are able to care for your families and pay your bills and not have to worry about unemployment extensions or adding to our defecit. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.
Same here I wish that I wasn’t but Jobs are HARD to come by right now even ones that pay more than an Unemployment Check does. I don’t agree with everything the President say’s or does (even though I haven’t seen much) but I agree with what he is doing to help us that can’t find decent work.

Beans if you happen to get laid off( hoping that it wont happen) then you won’t be concerned how much taxpayers are paying for a 5th extension. One because you will be unemployed, will be the first to file as quick as possible. and because you have bills to pay just like the rest of us. Really not Americans are sitting on their butts doing nothing. Some people are doing what they can. And when you apply for jobs and go on countless interviews and you still don’t get hired, and result to doing nothing because you become depressed then you will get offended at a moron named beans who states horrible things they way you do. My husband always worked until his manager fired him (in turn he was fired for fradulent activity on time and inventory) that wasn’t my husband. Some stupid prick trying to get over created that problem. And we need money to take care of our 1 year old. Think about the suffer of the kids in this world if we don’t the necessary help to take care of them. it does suck for the people that are not truely able to land a job and are trying i know it does, but nothing is ever enough so when is it ever supposed to stop? it cant just keep on going, when is enough, enough? nothing is ever going to satisfy or not satisfy everyone.
This bill should have passed a month and a half ago. They have put up such a fight for it to pass that there is trepidation on even asking for a Tier 5 which should also have passed along with this extension. I pray politicians will stand up and do the right thing dispite the controversy. It should be brought up immediatley as the 99ers are getting increasingly disheartened and have had the longest battle. We may be feeling battle weary but we must be brave and forge ahead because there are the Tier 4′s that may be coming to the end and need a light at the end of the tunnel also. It should also be a priority in the states hardest hit like Las Vegas, NV where I live. I am a senior citizen also which magnifies the difficulty of finding a job. I can’t hold out much longer and my new address may be general delivery. I am educated with experience that takes years of working hard to acquire but all my experience does me no good and actually counts against me as I am over qualified. Employers are reluctant to hire some one who for all intents and purposes will leave the minute something better comes along also my boss would more than likely be younger than me and wouldn’t take kindly to supervising someone who could upstage them especially a woman be it a man or woman boss. My prospects are very scary. I worked for a company owned by Goldman Sachs by the way. I had a healthy income and it feels demeaning to go for jobs that pay less and I can’t even get those. Because most employers are only taking applications on line also adds to the dilemna since they are receiving hundreds of applications for one job I get lost in the shuffle. I feel like I’m banging my head against a wall and getting absolutely no where. It is extreemly frustrating. I understand why the suicide rate is up also drug abuse. People are simply trying to escape their wretched reality. Remarks that we are lazy and milking it only add to our frustration. I guess some people like to kick you when your down it must make them feel better about themselves. I am not asking for a hand out I’m asking for a hand up to buy time so we can get to a better place where I can find a position that will provide me capability to support myself and save me my dignity. I am a real American born and raised here I would never bleed the system and have taken pride on being able to work and pay taxes to be a productive member of society. I may have to go to Social Services for food stamps and rental and utilities help. I won’t do this because I want to I’ll do it because I have to. I’m not one to live on the streets. I’m happy for those who are still receiving their unemployment but they had better look further down the line if this economy doesn’t turn around by November the Tier 4′s will be where I am at now. We need to stick together and push for a Tier 5 so we can ride this out with some dignity.

If we had limited the benefits to 40-50 weeks, we would not have the issues now about passing an extension for those who ran out at 26 weeks. There is a happy medium.
As it is now – the additional costs are going to be passed along to already struggling businesses – causing more to fail – causing more people out of work and less job opportunities.
I think every unemployed American should be forced to take a basic Economics course so they can understand how our economic system SHOULD work!

First of all, this person is probably a teenager and has no idea what they’re talking about. At least I hope so because I would hate to think that an adult would be this stupid and uncaring. They also need to remember that sometimes karma is a b***h and can come back and bite you. Someday they may also be in this situation. To have your income cut to 1/4 of what you normally bring home and losing your health benefits is not milking the system. It’s barely keeping your head above water and playing roulette with your health.
I’ll make a deal with this person. Tell me what type of work you do and where you do it at. I will then personally go to your employer with your post, tell them I can do your job better, faster, and cheaper and you can milk the system for awhile. amen! Just a little piece of information for people who dont know about this extension. For every $1.00 the government puts out on this they expect to receive $1.60 back. Its like a stimulus package but better.
I have worked for the last 18 years non-stop, while paying for others to reap the benefits. From welfare to free health care, free public housing you name it and my tax dollars have payed for it. All of this coming out of my monthly income while raising my boys as a single mother. Never looking for a freebie. Was recently laid off after 16 years of employment with the same company, while my oldest son is heading out the door for his first year of college. And me home sitting with a pink slip after all those good years of service.
I’ve payed for others to be comfortable for 18years, is it to much to receive 99 weeks for all the money taken away from my dinner table when I needed it the most. I dont think so. Try standing in line budgeting 65 dollars worth of groceries a week for years,while people are in front of you with buggies of goodies that your kids want too, but couldn’t afford to put in our cart! I never took a hand out, and worked my butt off to make sure my boys new what earning a honest dollar looked like. So now I must loose my car and house because no one saw my efforts and countless days and nights of being a good citizen, employee,etc… Is 99 weeks really to much to ask? It is simple the system should be based on the time and money you put in, then it will never be a question as to who deserves what! No one to slip under the radar this way.

I had surgery in 2006 and I tried to get a job, but I have had no luck. I had a job for 9 years and because the economy sucked, they got rid of people. I went to school through unemployment to be a medical biller. The problem with that is, no one wants you unless you have 2-3 years of experience, but how the hell are you supposed to get experience if no one will hire you? I have been putting out resumes for over a year. I must send out about 5 a day, I don’t hear from anyone, because there are 60 or more people going for the same job. I have applied for all kinds of jobs, but I haven’t had any luck. So for anyone to suggest that people who are unemployed are milking the system should be unemployed themselves and live through this nightmare. I am so in debt because of having no job. I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.

Well let me tell you something. I have been working since I was 13- years old. I started out as a babysitter, went to college, landed 2 awsome career jobs, bought a home, had a baby and never thought that I would ever lose my job. I was a kick butt sales rep. for a large national company. WHO COULD TOUCH ME??? Well I am here to tell you that ANYONE can lose their job. Including me, the very individual who thought that everyone else had that possiblity EXCEPT for me. I could never understand why people have been unemployed for so long. I didn’t get it. I thought that they were being lazy. I have been unemployed since Aug. 4th, 2009. I am college educated (BA Degree) and now am taking more classes durning my own time just to make me feel useful while I am looking for employment. So bottom line is, I can’t find a job at all, therefore I decided to take classes to make me feel better and to better my current education….every little bit helps. I have litterly sent 100′s of resumes’ out and “NO” I have not been picky at all. I will take anything. I have even tried to find bartending jobs, even if it is for cash. I really don’t care at this point. I had my car reposesed last week, THANK GOD, and I mean THANK GOD my fiance’ was able to dig into his savings and get me a car for now because what the hell would i do???? I am going to tell you somthing right now!! There are 2 types of people out there, those who want to work and those who don’t. For people like me, why should I lose everything when I have worked my ass off!!!! When I find a job, you bet your ass I am going to take it not matter what it is. For the lazy people out there……well it is up to our government to weed those people out. Start demanding drugs test, start monitoring more closely the state aid we are handing out. KEEP TRACK OF THESE TYPES OF PEOPLE!!! Don’t punish the ones who don’t deserve it.
I truly agree! I was fortunate to get to take a few years off to help my then boyfriend for a few years when his wife left hin with infant twins and a 2 year old in tow! it was cheaper for me to stay home than work miminum wage and pay child care,,, when they got school age i went back to my CNA job but broke my arm in feb last year and could not work! Unfortunately with the decline of the economy and car industry there reaaly is not much work for him now either!!! we are both out of work but lookin hard! I am fortunate, i found A job nota good one but a job none the less,,,greeter at walmart amking 7.50 hour!!! I believe that things will get better but time is of the essence when you have rent and utilities and kids to raise!!!
To the people saying the unemployed are lazy, get a life losers!!! I have worked since i was old enough to push a lawn mower and was laid off from a 23 dollar an hour job in dec 08. I have looked everywhere for a job and two days ago finally got lucky, its only min wage which is only a third of what i’m used to getting but it was the first job to give me the time of day and i was happy to take it… So keep running off at the mouth about things you clearly don’t understand or care about but when it happens to you don’t cry about it and expect anyone to care you heartless pieces of crap. For the rest of the unemployed i got lucky and truly understand what your going through and hope you can find work or get another extension. I hope someone or something blesses you.
I am soooo upset with the ignorant ppl on these websites who say that unemployment is for lazy ppl or people dont need extensions. I am no where near lazy I have a B.S degree and certification from the ABA to be a paralegal. Those same so called “lazy unemployed” paid their dues before they got layed off. How can you punish someone for losing their job? How can you call them lazy when it’s a proven fact that they did work or they wouldn’t be eligible for unemployment. The government does a fine job of bailing out the bigwigs on Wall Street and rewarding the car manufacturers.. and our lending institutions so why are they hesitant on helping the ones who paid in the first place. It is terrible that so many people are so judgemental of people who recieve unemployment benefits. So quick to judge. The very same people who, if they were in the same position, would be one of the first to jump off a bridge if they had to live thru HALF the distress that a lot of these unfortunate people have to deal with. When you have worked and done your best, lose your job, and have to look in your kid’s eyes and see them cry when you have to tell them that you can’t afford a new pair of shoes for school, or even pay for a haircut when you’ve taken care of them and always at least been able to provide the neccessities of life. Cold hearted, and down-right evil! I won’t even try to defend the ones who are affected by this terrible situation, because if it were your sorry a.., you’d sop it up with a biscuit!! You know if you use logic. The people are not working because of lack in jobs. I have gotten feedback on some jobs saying they have had a 1000 or more applying for 20 jobs. I’m tired of people saying we don’t want to work. I thought at the very begin that the federal,state and city should have use us in jobs that was short handed to help out with their own debts. I am in construction and now my wages went from $25.50 to $10.00.When our gov. can give aid to other country before helping their own. I am currently receiving tier 3 benefits which will run out august 14. From what I understand this bill only guarantees I can get tier 4 benefits which are 6 weeks in duration? I was unemployed june 10, 2009. Is this bill going to help me beyond the tier 4? thanks, I am confused as to what they are considering a 99er….I have received 59 weeks of benefits, sent out over 400 resumes and not one call for a job.

We need a Tier 5. Where is President Obama? Is he just leaving us behind out in the cold? How do we miraculously find work. We need the time while they try so they say to create jobs in order for us to work again. I heard someone call The House and speak to the Head of the Labor Dept. It turns out it was about the fate of the 99′ers and what he was going through. For some reason, that was the only call that had so much static they had to cut him off. I can see a lot of crime coming our way. I haven’t heard the President speak on the long term unemployed. They sort of categorize everyone and confuse everyone so we are left waiting and hoping. I am unemployed as well. My husband I Had to close our tool shop down after 13 years of hard, stressful and back breaking hours. First, I would like to educate some unemployed workers how unemployment works. You, as an employee, do not pay into the unemployment fund. Your employers do this for you. These dollars do not come out of your earnings. Secondly, our own Government put you out of work. When the NAFTA agreement was signed. American manufacturers cannot compete with China and Mexico. To hive you an example; A very large Corporation that makes radios for cars has a plant in China. The workers live in the plant that has barbwire around it and they get paid somewhere around $3.00 a day. Now, if you are a manufacturer in the U.S., you as an employer have to abide by labor laws. Some of these are health insurance, unemployment taxes, social security, fair wages and I could go on and on. American manufacturers just cannot compete. Our Government should have seen this disaster ahead of time. When you put that many people out than you have to know that it spreads. If you lose your job manufacturing brake parts and the company you work for employs 25,000 people than every single business from beauty salons to restaurants to car deslerships suffer! If you do not have a job, how are you going to buy a car? Blame the Government. Try and find a manufacturing job now!

This is horrific. i can not imagine what you all are going thru. I really had no idea. I have a 8 year old son and am the sole provider. Luckily, I won an insurance settlement and was able to buy a foreclosure outright so I have no mortgage. I do know what it is like not being able to pay rent, however. Several years ago, I was collecting UI and I would not seek work really until I was just about to reach the end of my benefits.
The point is that there was always jobs that I could easily get. God help me if I were in your situation were there are no jobs. Congress seems to have a blind eye to the fact that there are no jobs to get. Unemployment benefits isn’t keeping people unemployed, no jobs is keeping people unemployed. The media is doing a great job of hiding this crisis from the public. I really had no idea. I guess they don’t want the rest of us to get scared and totally stop spending… hurting the economy further.

To beans: All I have to say is this, should you lose your job don’t apply for benefits. That’s one way for you to do your part, especially if the taxpayers’ cost to provide benefits is your big concern. No one wants to lose their home and I think you’d be right there in line should the need to make ends meet arise in your home. No one gets unemployment for 2 years. If you are in a state with an unemployment rate over a certain percent you can draw for 99 weeks only. Even with this new extension. That is not 2 years. If anyone from North Carolina is reading these posts you should know that our Senator Richard Burr has continuously voted against any unemployment extensions. He has stated that it keeps people from looking for work because they live well off unemployment. I called his office about this a few months ago and was given a return call by one of his aides who told me that Senator Burr does not consider unemployment a federal problem. PLEASE remember this in November, if you vote in North Carolina, and vote against Richard Burr. He voted against the extension on Tuesday. I emailed his office and received no reply. Elaine Marshall is running against him and I’ve also spoken to her. She emailed me about 1 hour after the vote and told me it had passed. I am not trying to campaign for her but her concern does mean a lot and she will probably get my vote. Richard Burr will definitely NOT get my vote. I don’t understand how he thinks we are living well off unemployment. Right now I have about .15 in my bank account and maybe 2.00 in my purse. I have no benefits until this new extension is implemented. I’ve actually thought about calling Senator Burr back and telling him if he thinks I’m milking the system then give me a job! I would love to get a paycheck and some benefits. In fact I would do the best job I could. The best way the unemployed can show how unhappy they are with their representation is to vote them out of office. We may be unemployed but we can still vote. We can also let others know about these politicians stand on the economy. They will send millions of dollars to third world countries to help people, who never see the money because of their crooked political systems, but do not want to help those of us here in the United States who have worked hard all our lives. Hello all just curious how many over 45 unemployed workers are out there. All the jobs that I have applied for, I seem to be a perfect fit, Just wondering how much my age, 53yrs old, is working against me? As for the comments from Mr. Bean. you must be one abused child. Any hard working adult who is raising children and is now facing the loss of everything after years of hard work would not even think of making such comments.
Well bean, Im 100% sure people would clean the Highways for money being that they are unemployed. Only thing is Im also 100% sure you are saying this to call the unemployed lazy and not deserving help. I would clean them without any complaints. Looking for a job would be hindered by working for money that will eventually disappear and then the search would resume again without any finances for those who would accept the bean program which would put us in a worst position. Hello im from long island and was laid off from LIPA in August of 09.. I claimed 46 weeks of benefits and it just ran out July 10th.. Will this extension help me or no?
