Unemployment Extension July 20, 2010 Update: The Call for Tier 5

July 20, 2010 by · 369 Comments

Unemployment Extension July 20, 2010 Update: The Call for Tier 5 – A lot of unemployed Americans are now expecting the much awaited unemployment bill to be passed within this week. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin already appointed Carte Goodwin to replace the late Senator Richard Byrd to complete the needed 60 votes.

Carte Goodwin is scheduled to be sworn in the Senate on Tuesday at 2:15 pm and then immediately after, at 2:30, they will begin voting on the unemployment extension bill. That vote will be on a motion to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed. Once that passes, a cloture motion on the bill itself will be in order for Thursday morning. After that, another vote on the “motion to concur in the House amendment to the Senate amendment to the bill with Reid Amendment No. 4425” will be voted within 30 hours before it can send over to the House of Representatives for the final vote and finally lined up for Obama‘s signature.

Since Goodwin is a Democrat, it is expected that his vote will add to the Democrats to counter the leading Republican filibuster. Republicans continue to counter the passage of the bill since according to them, there’s not much enough funds and that it could just add a burden to the fiscal deficit of the government.

For the record, H.R. 4213 will be the unemployment extension bill that will be voted upon. This is not a Tier 5 unemployment bill. However, this bill proposes to extend the filing deadline for existing tiers (Tiers 1- 4) of unemployment benefits until November 30, 2010 and extend for three month the closing deadline for first-time home buyers looking to get the $8,000 tax credit.

The Government has used billions of its funds in bailing out Wall Street companies notwithstanding other funds diverted in various military operations in other countries. The unemployment extension bill must be passed immediately. Do we still have to wait when crime becomes an issue because Americans need to survive just to catch the attention of our dear politicians?

Join the millions of unemployed Americans in signing the petition for the unemployment extension bill to be passed. A project of the Democratic National Committee calling for Republicans to stop blocking the help for the unemployed is available HERE.

In addition, here is the speech of President Obama addressing the relief offered to the unemployed:

I feel that if people have went thru 4 tiers and have not been able to find a job yet, they have problems or are just trying to milk the system. Wal mart and Mcdonalds are always hiring. Its people like that which make it hard for people trying to get unemployment or for people trying to get a first extension or second extension. Not hating, just stating facts.

    • Leah says:

I am ready to pass out from hunger. This is no joke. I have not had more than cookies, tea, cake and plain pasta for the last week. I have loose change left and have no idea how I will pay electric, phone or water this month or thereafter. August rent looms over my head like the sword of Damocles. If there is no Tier 5, I don’t know what will happen. I have no milk, bread or butter in the house and down to 4 eggs. God help us all.

    • Larry says:

There’s seems to always be 1 ignorant idiot in the crowd… and Beans your it.

    • Sarah says:

To the person who says Walmart is always hiring… Just an FYI… I have a steady job, however, my husband does not and has been on unemployment for 79 weeks. We have a family of 5 – and don’t think we are financially irresponsible, at the time he had those children he was making 100K per year before being layed off – and cannot exist on my income alone. He just had an interview with Walmart, and apparently there were 8 tables set up with 2 interviewers at each table, and each interviewer had a line of people they were interviewing that went outside and around the building… So, sure, they are hiring… but there are not enough open positions to satisfy that many people… Just thought you would like to know…

    • corinnea says:

@ Bean…you think walmart and mcdonalds are always hiring…NOT!!!! Most of us are considered over qualified and they will not hire us..I have tried…I’m not milking the unemployment…I have been searching everyday since I lost my job and have applied for 160 jobs with only 6 interviews….there are more than 5 people for every 1 job also, I don’t know where the government get their numbers but they are wrong…here in michigan nayway, there are about 1000 people for every job….or maybe even more….

    • Beth says:

99 weeks! And you want more! Over a year and a half of benefits.

Go work 3 jobs to get your kids shoes and keep your home! Its just plain ridiculous to expect anymore handouts.

If we had limited the benefits to 40-50 weeks, we would not have the issues now about passing an extension for those who ran out at 26 weeks. There is a happy medium.

As it is now – the additional costs are going to be passed along to already struggling businesses – causing more to fail – causing more people out of work and less job opportunities.

I think every unemployed American should be forced to take a basic Economics course so they can understand how our economic system SHOULD work!

    • anonymous says:

      To all the 99ers-

There is nothing in this bill for a Tier 5 extension. And id won’t be added. I’m saying this so you prepare any way you can My heart goes out to all of you, I know what the job market is like.

But I also know MANY people on Tier 5 are holding out against hope they’ll be taken care of, and it’s just not going to happen. It’s NOT in the bill. Apply for welfare, food stamps, whatever you need to do to take care of you and yours. There will be last minute obstruction against the bill as it exists already.

Please be prepared. May God watch over you.

    • Joe says:

I believe the people that are now applying for unemployment or are not 99 weekers need the same benefits as you have already received.

    • Tony Burris says:

To all those that say that people want to stay on unemployement to just milk the system, I want to say this. ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FREAKING MINDS? WHO WANTS TO JUST STAY AT HOME AND DO NOTHING? Not this guy. I am a certified teacher here in Texas with a BS and A MA degree in Education, and I can’t find a job. The Wal-Marts and McDonalds do not want to hire me because they are thinking that come the time to open school, I will be gone. And they’re right. Why should I stay at a job designed for somebody right out of high school, when I was making over $47k a year? I spend 6 to 8 hours a day researching jobs on the Internet (because every business tell us to apply online), and what do I get? An email back saying thanks and if I match their needs they will get back to me. In over a year without a job, I have had 6 interviews. And now with unemployment monies gone for the past 6 weeks, I am 2 weeks from being homeless.

    • Ct-woman says:

I am a single mother with 2 children, unemployed since march 08…..have applied to over 3000 positions and have had 2 interviews!!! I’m not even getting any call backs! Mcdonalds, Stop & Shop, Walmart, Burger King, KFC EVERY WHERE!!!! NO ONE IS CALLING BACK!!! I have not received any unemployment benefits since May 2010, I own my home, have a car and all I receive is food stamps! My savings are all gone! Now I am borrowing from family members to help pay for my mortgage, hopefully I can keep receiving the help from them, because things are also tough on them, everyone is struggling in one form or another. I do appreciate the help of my family! But what are the unemployed supposed to do??? GO ROB BANKS??? SELL DRUGS?? STEAL?? KILL?? WTH
How are we supposed to feed our kids? Pay our bills?? THIS IS STR8 UP RIDICULOUS! ALL UNEMPLOYED NEED TO BE HELPED….99ers and ALL…TIER 5 BETTER BE IN THE WORKS, BECAUSE IF NOT…I PREDICT CRIME, HOMELESSNESS, DRUG/ALCOHOL ABUSE, MENTAL ILLNESSESS TO RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!! HELP- PLEASE HELP HELP!!!!

    • rice says:

How do you expect to feed your family of 4 or even 6 on a mc donalds or walmart salary do your research see how many people are hired full time at one of these places verry few. Most good paying jobs closed down with the economy. we just want our good paying jobs and benefits back.just stating the facts.

    • Wisha says:

its $70 dollars a day for daycare for my 2 children, so a McDonalds salary is only going to pay daycare. so what is a person to do? government assistance is SO unreliable and not readily available. It is quite a task to go from 60k a year to about a 1000 bucks a month when rent is 900.00! And no one will give you a cheaper apartment because you are unemployed.

    • Mike says:

Walmart and McDonalds?!!! Why dont you try supporting a family off of a 7 or 8 dollar an hour job and not to mention neither the Mcdonalds or the Walmart are hiring near me.

  2. JR says:

In order to understand our government, we must consider the powers that be. Being a 99er, I believed that President Obama would hold true to his promise. Having seen jobs being outsourced by corporate America downsizing, greed and complasive politicians. It makes me often wonder; Give Me Liberty OR Give Me Death!!!!!
My fellow 99er’s our Government has given us DEATH!

As we all know our government has formally delivered propaganda of the American dream. But the 99er’s are the forsaken. Nevertheless, Our Government commanded the 99er’s to march forward into despair, because there are no jobs for us to bear.

In other words by excluding the 99er’s from this bill. We are forced to leave behind the loves ones we once cherished, because as a man you feel that you can no longer support their hearts.

“A man without a Job” is like he does not exist!! And without this extension the 99er’s will not exist!!! But let me say this! The way congress thinks today. Is let’s roll the dice!!! They are not important; Now that they are in office.

The Banks and Wall Street are doing business as usual. High interest rates and foreclosure’s for the month of June 2010 was 1.5 million!! I’m a true believer in GOD. But I often pray and wonder about my future in America today, the land of equality freedom and liberty.

Again, Mr. President, Congress, Senator’s. You give the 99er’s an executive order. As forgotten bewildered and broken soldiers. We command congress to an extension to liberty justice in the name of survival!!

Rescue the 99er’s from the dephts of despair, suicide, homeless and wondering aimlessly in a barren jobless land. For it is your duty as men not leaders to obey and command your OATH! To protect serve your fellow citizen’s without discrimination or malice.

I hereby command all 99er’s to converge on Washington D.C. in the name of survival and not to sit back as peasants to your own execution. Remember your voice and vote counts. Let Washington hear us as well…. Send your voices, thoughts, concerns and hearts. Yes We Will And Yes We CAN!!!!!

    Regards, R

    • Pat in NJ says:

      Bravo…wel said!
Now if only they will hear us!!!

    • Beth says:

Rescue you?!?! You had 99 weeks that the government rescued you!

Time to rescue yourself – GO GET A JOB!

    • Hector says:

Hey Beth you sound like the an evil person, do you at the very least have a heart in your chest. Real people are being affected by this, how about I come and Robb you of all that you have and say now try and survive with out any help. You must be well off or else you wouldn’t make such lowlife comment like that, but you rich people will only entice the poor to take from you so you can feel what its like not to have or to plainly struggle. Beth come into my world you heartless human being, remember this world goes round and all those that think your day wont come , think again what you reap you sow, you poor excuse of a human being.

    • Frank says:

      To R,
Very well said. I think people have forgotten what this country and what our government was founded on. There have been so many years of greed and corruption in our government that it seems like it is almost expected and accepted by a lot of people now a days. People have been desensitized to the hardships of others because they get so wrapped up in their owns success. It is such a shame that people can look at a fellow American who has fallen victim to the economy and show such disrespect and cruelty.

      And to Beth,

Like I mentioned above, how can you be so horrible? I have compassion and empathy for those who are currently eligible for unemployment and especially those 99′ers who have been tossed aside like a piece of trash. But I have NO compassion or empathy for those that kick them when they are down. Remember, to qualify for unemployment insurance you have to have lost your job THROUGH NO FAULT OF YOUR OWN. These aren’t people that did something wrong to get fired or who chose to quit their jobs because they were lazy. And to continue receiving unemployment you have to continue to look for work and show evidence of your job search. So to people like you, I hope that one day you feel the hopelessness of not having a job, not having a source of income and not having family or friends to ask for help, to look at your children and tell them that “we are going to have to go to a shelter” or that “we have no food so we have to go to a soup kitchen”, or try to explain to a 5 year old why Santa Claus won’t be coming this year… I would never wish this on anyone but I make an exception for you Beth and others out there like you. Because you obviously take what you have for granted if you can spew that heartless comment at someone who is truly sufferring. You should be ashamed of yourself and you should really think before you make comments. You showed your true colors and the worst thing of all is that there are alot of other people out there that think like you. And unfortunately some of them have been elected to our government. So before you speak, put yourself in their position and think about what they are going through. I am ashamed that you are an American citizen and I can’t believe you can call yourself an American with an attitude like that. You and you selfish, self-serving, heartless, and cruel point of view are everything that is wrong with this country. And I would love to see you spout off these types of comments to the faces of the unemployed Americans and the 99′ers. Even more I would like to see you say it to their children. Go dig a hole and bury yourself because that’s where you belong.

Also, In case you haven’t noticed in every interview with a Republican Congressman or Senator or even anyone who is opposing the unemployment extension because of concerns for the deficit, everytime they are asked why they oppose an unfunded unemployment insurance extension but feel that the Bush Tax Cuts for the wealthiest Americans should be continued without being offset, they never answer the question. They deflect and repeat answers to previous questions. It just shows how blind these people are to what decisions they make. They don’t care, they just go along with what their party says and do not care who it affects… Oh wait I’m sorry, they do care who it effects because as long as the rich stay rich enough to fund their campaign “War Chests” then they will support it. It is disgusting and disheartening how powerful money has gotten to corrupt the American government and the American people. And just so you know, the majority of American people no longer support the “deficit” as a reason not to support the Unemployed Americans. According to recent polls, almost 70% of registered voters think it’s more important to support the unemployed than the deficit. And the polls are not from some random website, they are from CBS News and ABC News polls.

I can’t wait for the day when Beth doesn’t have a job because she is to busy putting people down. Does your boss know that you are sitting on your computer putting people down, let me know where you work and I will give them a call and let them know. Beth, unemployment is a third of what people got paid, I don’t know about others but I pay FEDERAL taxes on it and jobs like McDonalds and Walmart won’t hire because they want people they can pay minimum wage to, not people with years of experience, one or multiple college degrees. Everyone wants the almighty dollar and if these companies took the time to train me, pay me and then I quit six months later the company loses. Oh and the comment about the economics class, I had to take two of them of my one degree, I am well aware of how things work. Supply and demand, sure these companies are going to have the supply but if people don’t have money then there is no demand for the product. I wish everyone of this message board the best of luck with todays vote and to Beth I really hope that your boss isn’t tracking your computer activity.

  3. Piper says:

I’m sorry Alma but they can kick the tier 5 recipients under the curb and it will be a shame. The only thing that has any chance whatever of changing the Republicans minds would be their across the board defeat in the November elections. Loss of power is all they understand and that would certainly get their attention. Unfortunately it would come far too late to help the people who are without benefits now.

I am sixty years old and I can’t believe what is happening. Yes there have been recessions before but only the Great Depression comes close to this one. But even then the Republicans and Democrats pulled together to help the people out, if only those politicians were still around. The Democrats may be indecisive about many things but when it comes to helping us out they are front and center. Unfortunately, the Republicans have no intention of doing anything to help the unemployed unless it will help them get elected. How sad that they don’t put their own people ahead of politics.

  4. santana says:

Tier 5 is necessary for the 99ers. We need to pay our bills, buy clothes and school supply for our children. I get 169.00 in food stamps which is not enough to eat a healthy meal everyday. I’m diabetic and have to pay for my medications…If I don’t get an tier 5 I will end up in a shelter…Please help the 99ers. I’m been searching for jobs but there is nothing out there.

  5. sekenus boneparte says:

Hey I’m agreeing there are no jobs out here. I am a college grad who needs the tier 5 in order to feed my family. I have worked for the census bureau and their still saying that I don’t have enough to file a new claim. I and many other americans need this unemployment tier 5

  6. Gale Satchell says:

WE NEED A TIER 5. I HAVE A DAUGHTER GETTING READY TO START SCHOOL AND I HAVE NO MONEY TO BUY HER ANYTHING RIGHT NOW. WE NEED HELP. HOW CAN OUR GOVERMENT LET US STARVE, THEY ARE KILLING US. IF THEY ADD A TIER 5, THEN ADD MORE WEEKS TO TIER 4. MAKE IT SO THAT WE CAN COLLECT FROM APRIL 1, 2O10. HELP US

  7. jimmy says:

both parties agree there is a need for a tier v and that people are in need. so why dont they come off vacation for a while and do some work an get the job none.they sit arond saying well the people need this well do something about it .dont sit around talking about it do something

    • Dayli says:

Congress will have a recess from August 6 for a month. I think something should be done before then.

  8. David says:

According to AOL there are 1.4 million Americans who have exausted all benefits up to Tier 4 yet some states like Texas can’t even get tier 4. You have to have 3 consecutive months at 8.5% or higher to qualify for Tier 4 in your state.
    http://www.aolnews.com/article/2010-unemployment-extension-faq-tier-5-99ers-explained-and-de/19555874

There are 1.4 million Americans called 99ers. 1.4 million families is a lot who exausted 99 weeks. I’ve been on unemployment in Texas and I didn’t even get the full 93 weeks. I was shorted by about 30 weeks after using up all my tiers from the state because they say “UP TO 93 Weeks”.

So all these congressmen who are saying 99 weeks is more than enough time, most of the 1.4 million families NEVER got 99 weeks. They got UP TO, but most missed the mark because these states are using unemployment wages to calculate what they should qualify for. So they are saying based on your past wages (which are none since you are on unemployment) we are going to short you 30 something weeks or whatever they decide to calculate. The unemployment offices also count partial weeks as a full week. So if you got a partial week of $50, that counts as one of your weeks in your overall max total of weeks. So what’s happening is a lot of the 99ers aren’t getting anything close to 99 weeks, the 99ers term is false and misleading and a borderline conspiracy to make it sound like these people are getting 99 weeks and want more now, when the reality is many missed the 99 mark counting in all 4 tiers by around 20-30 weeks!

My question is will there be a tier 5 or will 1.4 million Americans and their families continue to suffer? And when will the media address that the 99ers don’t exist. Very few people get 99 weeks of unemployment because as I said above, they are using past wages to calculate what you get and if you have no wages, just unemployment, there is practically no way you’ll get the max.

  9. Dayli says:

For what I have seen in this video, the president seems to know the background of Jim C. but does the president know that the unemployment benefit extension that will be voted tomorrow, DOES NOT include the 99rs? Does he know?

  10. Dee says:

Does anyone know if it gets approved tomorrow how long it will take to get it? Havent been through the extention before

  11. Julie Smilth says:

God Bless President Obama. Please senators, pass this bill.

  12. scott says:

untited we stand and divided we fall and right now we are falling and we are divided.tier 4 must have more weeks put on it and tier 5 must be passed for the american worker who has lost their jobs due to no fault of their own and cannot find a new job.
tax breaks must be given to potential employers to hire and something needs to be done to address the issue of employer not wanting to hire people in the late 40,s and people in their 50,s and early 60,s because employers are discriminating against these age groups but simply telling people something different.I hired and fired for the last 10 years and see exactly what these employers are doing.
Also employers are telling people who have been unemployed for some time they cannot apply for their job openings.WHY and what is being done to stop this form of discrimination toward the unemployed worker?

  13. CRISIS!!!! says:

WHAT WOULD OUR FOUNDING FATHERS DO!!!! DO THEY NOT SEE THIS IS A CRISIS AND 3 MILLION ARE ABOUT TO END UP IN SOUP KITCHENS AND SUICIDE RATES WILL GO UP!! THIS BILL NEEDS TO BE PASSED ASAP.SENATORS TOOK A 4TH VACATION WHILE AMERICANS HAVE BEEN SUFFERING AND TRYING TO SURVIVE!! COME NOVEMBER ELECTIONS WE THE PEOPLE WILL REMEMBER!!!! AND OBAMA WHEN YOU SAY TIME FOR A CHANGE THEN YOUR RIGHT BECAUSE COME 2012 YOU WILL BE IMPEACHED IF THINGS DO NOT START GETTING BETTER.THIS IS A CRISIS AND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WITHOUT FOOD,HOME,CAR,AND STRUGGLING TO SURVIVE THIS IS REALITY AND MILLIONS ARE SUFFERING.THESE SENATORS DECIDE TO TAKE THERE SWEET TIME.THIS IS DOWN RIGHT SICK HELP ALL AND GOD BLESS EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Bill says:

They better pass this extension now, before riots break out all over the country.People who are desperate to survive will go to extreme measures to do so.The crime rate in this country will increase. If the economy gets worse…dont be surprised to see a major revolt in this nation.People are very sick and tired and stressed out to the extreme at this point…that is dangerous.Politicians ran this country into the dirt…WE DIDNT.But we are feeling and trying to deal with the disastrous conditions from their repeated incompetence.GOD BLESS AMERICA…THE LAND THAT WE LOVE

  15. michael says:

we can send 400 million dollars over to gaza but we have no money for unemployment people listen the governement is screwing us in all different directions we need to stand up for what is rightfully ours

  16. Tier 5 or crime will go up ! says:

I pratically begged today at a job agency for any work, temp or perm, file clerk or anything at all. I was told I was over qualified for those positions and they did not have anything in my field outside sales. I said my resume reads I sold million dollar accounts Im sure I can file and she said thier are just not enough jobs. The employers dont want to hire someone who will leave when a better opportunity comes along so they will not hire someone with your resume ! People who are employed dont get it, thier are no jobs for the unemployed and yes we do try to step down in position and pay to !

  17. fred9 says:

“we need to pass this bill for men like (the man stranding to the right of the President)”
Our president later tells up how this man, out of work apx 2 years has exhausted his benefits.
Someone please explain to Mr. President and I, how this helps the aforementioned man.

Error? Or more smoke up my posterior!

  18. M Petrock says:

The Dems and the Reps could care less about adding a Tier 5. We’re worthless as far as they’re concerned.

  19. M Petrock says:

5 applicants for every opening my butt!! Try over 100 applicants for every opening!!!

    • Mike says:

      M Petrock,

I agree about the 100 applicants to one, at least it seems that way and it goes for just about everyone of my application. Sometimes I would ask the employer, be it a professional job or just a gig, they’d tell me they have close to a hundred applicants in the first day or so.

    • Pat in NJ says:

In NJ it’s more like 500 applicants for every job!

    • corinnea says:

In Michigan it is 1000 to 4000 applications per 1 job….the governemnt has their numbers screwed up!!!

  20. chris Pennsylvania says:

I dont think the people of this country will stand by while Senate takes as much as one more vacation… Riots will soon come to pass.. people collecting Tier 4 will soon be along with Us 99′ers .. some of who will not even make 99 weeks. But as this economy keeps going like it is today, Eventually people will run out of tier 4 too and thus spending less money in the economy. Eventually they will add up to the millions on top of the millions who need a tier 5. So eventually they will have to pass it… or we all will suffer. The Employers know that the economy is crap and will not hire til they know … or feel safe that, they, themselves wont be paying out unemployment anytime in the near future for a couple hundred employees or thousands that they do not need because american people can no longer afford their services … and as for the Banks … Screw them SOB’s places like M&T Bank and other major corporate banks have been stealing from the consumers for years. They will eventually fail too if no one has any money to put in their banks .. then of course you know the government will come running to their aid like they were dumb enough too before. Hand US the money … things will pick back up but as long as you hand it to them who screw us, the economy will get no better anytime soon.

    • concerned for the babies says:

I totally agree, very good point,,, if they had given that money to the lower class (as they call us), we would have put that money back into the economy spending it on our children, bills, groceries, prescriptions, etc. instead they gave it to the big dogs which only ended up in greedy pockets who don’t deserve it or even need it. I have been unemployed for over yr. and half, I had a little savings to get me through couple months with my bills, I am just so concerned for the ones with babies who was living by pennies and now don’t even have a penny to buy food. God bless these people and the government needs to help their own!!! NOW.

  21. mechelle says:

I live in las vegas and they cut my unemployment on the first extension. other
people have been collecting alot longer than i have but that isn’t the issue
two every one job here their are thousands of people applying for the positions
that is even working in a seven 11 or jack in the box. it is almost up to 14percent here who ever said the depression is over they lie.we have bailed out
wall street, greese, the war just so they can kill are men to protect a insane
country that will attact again someone read notra domouis readings or take a look at the bible. all of what is happening is in the bible i am not religious but
everybody should pick it up and read it. the congress has jobs rent money vacation
money, health care, and a great retirement what do we have lose are way of life
and dignity they should extend the unemployment for up to two years for states
with unemployment from 9percent to 14 and above. thie is totally crazy instead
of sending greese trillion dollars because they over spent their country they
should of thought of us americans.

  22. Jim says:

The facts suck but we can’t follow all the other countries that created a workers utopia that ended up breaking them with unsustainable debts and finally broke them as a nation (not to mention bringing down the euro and killing the world economy). These are facts end of story look at Greece who’s heart was bigger than their brain. And thank God most of these liberal hacks blogging everywhere are a minority in the country. Obama’s poll numbers down, Dem’s across the board are down; by Nov they will be a non-issue and lucky to even get an op ed piece in some small town paper. The facts are we need to create jobs period, we don’t need to finance another group that needs money. Sorry to say but it’s time for battle field triage; some will never find jobs in their old positions or salaries because they are unemployable…. It’s not our job to support them until they can get those again because that would mean supporting them forever. It’s mean it’s sad but it’s right on time. The sooner we get over the heart strings getting tugged the better. It’s not America’s job to support them as they were before, it’s their job to find a job as quickly as possible and face reality that the good old days are gone instead of relying on the workers and economy to support them until they are satisfied. Time to separate the wheat from the chaff and move on to more pressing problems that face the MAJORITY of Americans. As in the movie “Saving Private Ryan” the Doc told the medic (in the opening scene of D Day on the beach) move on to somebody you can save. After a tier 5 it’s OVER time for America to move off the beach.

You are heartless. To be honest, I was like you before I was laid off last year. Some people, like me, really tried all means to get a job but could not. I have a graduate degree and two undergraduate degrees. When I talked to the recruiting agents, I just asked for “whatever available”. However, no job means no job. Now everyday I am just wondering how to feed my two kids tomorrow. I have one wish, you will join the unemployment soon then you will understand what we are experiencing!

    • Pat in NJ says:

So why then did we give trillions to help Greece instead of helping our own? Those greedy bastards only have their own interests in mind! Heart my butt…money in their pockets is all the heart they care about!
As far as being unemployable…that’s bull! The jobs we used have are now overseas and take a guess why? Yes those greedy bastards again letting this happen for money in their pockets!!!!
Oh and let me guess…you have a job?! Well don’t think that you are same even if you are the owner! You might be in our shoes one day and I’m sure at that point you’d be sending a much different message!

America…land of opportunity for everyone but Americans!

    • anonymous says:

Jim, you and your battle triage metaphors. lol What a douche. It’s morons like you, not the 99ers, that are bringing this country to it’s knees. I’d love to slap the ever-loving crap out of you, but I don’t hit uni-tards. A-Hole.

  23. Jim9813 says:

I do have a job, finally. Just started yesterday. Haven’t had any income in 4 weeks now. The phone won’t stop ringing… for now until it gets shut off. Hoping my car doesn’t get reposessed. I was on unemployent for about 66 weeks before getting cut off. During that time I refused to take any jobs paying less than what I was taking home from unemployment. Also, I really wanted a career change. Then the benefits stopped, three weeks later I had applied for 5 jobs, got 3 offers, and now making more money than I ever had. Oh, well. No career change, vacation’s over. Yep, that’s right, I’m a prime example of what the GOP is talking about. I’m hoping for the extension so I can catch up in the bills… but I could have gotten a job last summer. I’m sorry but I don’t believe is takes 99 flippin weeks to find a job, Stop fooling yourselves and lying to the rest of the country. Slap a sign on your car and buy a paintbrush, it isn’t that hard to find a way to make money. Even if you start bagging at walmart, still can claim and maybe make a percentage.

    • ron says:

You are the loser. Just because you luck out and was one out of a hundred to get a job doesn’t mean that other don’t need tier 5 internet clown. And how did you lose your last job anyway ? And just for clowning the unemployed ! We will see how long you will be employed before you be laid off again clown.

    • R in Georgia says:

You know this kind of response fools no one, your just another troll who wants to pretend to be one of us to make a point. There are many people who are trying very hard to find jobs, I am a lucky one in that my wife has not lost her job but we have definitely scaled our lives back. For anyone who continues to rant about how America cannot support your old life so learn how to work at a lower pay job, how many people on unemployment do you think were living the high life on 300 dollars a week because that is the avg check amount, and many get less than that per week. So people are not just riding a wave of prosperity on UI benefits they are barely surviving, I have many friends and neighbors who have lost everything, they are doing the right things taking all side work, consolidating homes with family and even skipping weeks of claims to try to extend their UI as long as possible but eventually it ends. With congress playing these games there are many people who just barely got their first initial UI claim before having unemployment cut off. Congress doesn’t mind extending 650 billion dollars worth of tax cuts for people who make more than 200,000 dollars a year, but the 34 billion for the unemployed is far too much for the country to bear.

    • Unbeliever says:

I don’t know how you were able to turndown jobs for as long as you were on unemployment. In Indiana if you are offered a job you must take it or lose your unemployment and it doesn’t matter what it pays. So I really wonder how truthful your statement really is. Plus the fact you were pretty lucky in receiving the three job offers most people are lucky to receive one and most of the time it is for a lot less then they were making. You story sounds too good to be true.

    • Pat in NJ says:

      Where do you live?!
Pass this info on to us as we need to find out where all the jobs are!
You jerk…as if anyone really believes your lie…I mean story!!!!!

    • anonymous says:

Jim, the good news is, your mom is working for me, shaving my pubic hairs and giving long, loving handjobs. Oh, and after she’s done? I’m going to make a voo-doo doll that looks just like your ugly, bloated Republican ass, and then I’m going to rip it’s head off. Time to die, Jim. You won’t be missed.

    • Linda says:

Jim, are you for real? If what you say is true, it is YOU that are responsible for putting the rest of us in this situation!
I DO try to get work. I DO intend to take a job if it is offered to me! I DO NOT want to sit around, expecting the government to take care of me. And Lord Help me if I get sick, without health insurance. My reduced Cobra ends in a couple of months (which by the way, even at the reduced price, costs me half of my unemployment compensation). This existence is depressing and demeaning.
And I believe that you probably didn’t get laid off, you probably got fired for a poor attitude, and you probably won’t make it at you new job, either.

  24. Gay Quitsch says:

The same people who don’t believe in the Tier 5 extension will be the ones questioning the high rise in crime in theVERY near future. A mans gotta do what a mans gotta do!

  25. Jone says:

Representives from hign unemployment states should initiate the tier 5 extention ASAP. The unemployed workers need it and the US economy needs it. Our economy is a consumer economy. Losing consumers will slow down our economy. Slow economy will hurt wall street and main street. Before enough jobs are created and transferred back to US from China and India, unemployment benefit should not be terminated.

  26. beans says:

If you cannot find a job after 4 tiers, you must have problems or are just trying to milk the system. Its people like that which make it hard for people trying to get unemployment or for people trying to get a first or second extension. Walmart and McDonalds are always hiring. Swallow your pride for once and get off the titty. You cannot expect somebody to support you for free your whole life. Not hating just stating the facts.

    • Pat in NJ says:

I’ve paid into the UI system for 38 years! I am not milking the system on $300 a week butthead!!!
Just like the other jerk wo posted on here…you don’t know what our lives are like unless you walk a mile in our shoes!
By the way…I can’t get a job at Walmart or McDonald’s because the managers are afraid that if I get hired I’ll take their position!

    • anonymous says:

Bean, you need to be put to sleep. No, seriously. I’d do it myself but my weiner is in your mom’s mouth right now.

    • T says:

I have a college degree, and HAVE applied to McDonald’s, etc., even for mgmt positions. These co. don’t take apps like mine seriously cos they want employees with experience, or employees that will stay with them. They judge us w/o even giving us an interview. Yeah, it’s tons of fun to deplete savings and live w/o health insurance.
People greedy like you helped create this mess, and us unemployed are the ones paying for it! Here’s an idea Beans……Give me your job, and then you try to survive w/o a paycheck while looking for work!

    • douglas says:

You are a freakin moron beans…..and you are NOT stating the facts. You act like all of us are milking the system, first off, we ALL paid into the system!!! Your complete arrogance is sickening. I’m wondering if your not a paid blogger to try to smear us, that have LOST their jobs because of layoffs, closings…I pray that you aren’t put in this situation, but then a little humble pie wouldn’t hurt either. If you have a job today – WAIT, cause it may NOT be there tomorrow, you could wake up, LIKE MOST OF US DID AND FIND THAT YOU’VE BEEN LET GO!!! YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM…why don’t you go to work at McDonalds/Walmart? You would see that, sure you can fil out an application, but YOU WONT GET CALLED BACK, as there are at least 100 applicants to 1 job. You don’t have the facts, you have arrogance, and that crude remark about swallowing your pride and get off the titty? JUST WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? You are acting like we’re one of those people on welfare that have 100 kids to just milk the system, BUT WE’RE ACTUALLY THE BACKBONE OF OUR NATION AND ECONOMY YOU HALF MINDED, COLD HEARTED S.O.B!!!! My god, your ignorance is only matched by your arrogance!!!

  27. Dash says:

Ha tier5 what a joke…its never going to happen. Why do idiots start writing this crap and then get the clones all stirred up? You would have better results writing to the north pole. Ahhh room service just arrived.

    • anonymous says:

      Hey Dash-

You need to be clubbed like a baby seal. I’d do it myself, but your mom is riding my weiner right now. DOUCHEBAG. Oh, yeah, and I pissed in your room service breakfast.

    • Dash says:

You’re a freeloader what do i care what you have to say. You need the govt to take care of you, sucessful people don’t. Thanks for the hit though.

    • douglas says:

Dash….i pray that you are served your pink slip, you arrogant little piece of a human. Freeloaders, funny, how long did you ride the college train? You sound like a little yuppie, that was fed by mommy and daddy, and have NO clue what you are talking about. Again, acting like it’s welfare, when our Congress & Wall street pushed this economy over the cliff and literally shut out our jobs. Now because we paid into the system, and are in actual need..you and your small brain say we’re freeloading? LOL, i am positive that you “freeloaded” while going to college. Just love the remark why should you care, your a freeloader….lol, you are part of the problem, and i’m sure your taking a handout somewhere, you smug little twit… I’m sure your reply with some smug – entitled remark, which will prove your character. Karma’s a bitch…and she will find you…

    • anonymous says:

Only a pudgy, needle-dick Republican would name himself ‘Dash’. hahaha The good thing is, you’re mom has a job, giving me long slow blowies while I take my morning dump. Now that’s one Republican dinosaur that knows how to work the shaft.

When she’s done, I’d love to meet up wherever you want and teach you a lesson that’ll last a lifetime. You Republican scuzzball. Time for you to draw your last breath, ‘Dash’. You won’t be missed.

    • Dash says:

you’re scaring me creep. Who you going to teach anything to freeloader? Stop with the buster badass I’m out of job routine. Heard it all before — and I’m not about to quit.

  28. Roxanne says:

This is a plan they had all a long~just like the oil spill….
    And for Jim says:
July 20, 2010 at 3:27 pm I would like to say, you need to get GOD in your life~ and I only pray he will show you some compassion towards others :> I will keep you in my prayers…
I think those who are working needs to experience this to really get a clue~

  29. Richard says:

All i want to say is that NO ONE is worthless. We all have something to offer, I know there are no jobs out there, I would like to suggest that those with free time volunteer. Why? You never know who is watching you, do your best at what you do, and see what becomes of it. It helped me get a job. If you can’t volunteer maybe you can write a blog, or do something online that could help bring in some revenue. All I’m saying is it’s NOT hopeless, YOU have something to offer, YOU ARE NOT WORTHLESS, the ONLY time someone is better than you is when YOU let them be. ARE YOU LISTENING CONGRESS? You won’t beat us down!!

  30. kasey says:

And after tier 5? Then 6? and 7?
If there isn’t a job after 2 years, then I guess you’ll never work.
Some people are going to have to lower their standard of living and take a job at K mart,wal-mart, home depot, and more of those kinds of places.
Heard way to any people say they wont take a job they don’t like or want to do or pays the same or less than their unemployment.
You want to work or you don’t.

    • Pat in NJ says:

Sure I want to work! Why don’t you give me your job butthead!!!

    • Sarah says:

If you can get my husband in at any ofthose places, I would appreciate it! They all have his resume – very solid resume with years and years of store management and retail experience – but they haven’t hired him (overqualified, being the reason they say they don’t hire him) but if you know a way to get past that, I’m all ears!

    • anonymous says:

Kasey, you’re just another douchebag who has no idea what they’re talking about. You’re a disgusting pig of a human. Go jump off a bridge. You we can do without. Scumball Republican

  31. LOSTINMASSACHUSETTS says:

Now the bill won’t be passed until Thursday? From what I read above they will be voting on this bill on Thursday. WHY NOT TODAY??? We needed this bill past weeks ago. What is this bulls*it I read above. The bill will be taken up on Thursday. COME ON YOU MORON SENATORS. DO YOUR JOB! THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. TAKE THIS BILL UP TODAY…NOT THURSDAY!!!!

  32. A.J. S. says:

I resent the notion that is floating around bashing 99′ers. What people FAIL to take in account is that 99′ers PUT IN YEARS, and YEARS worth of taxes into the system (thats the reason why they are ELIGIBLE for this benefit in the first place). My 26th UI payment was two weeks ago and I am sooo thankful that there is a huge chance that I will move to the next tier. But I am going to be so disappointed if they do not extend the benefit for the 99′ers because what it all boils down to is that, if my benefit gets extended for another few months -to buy me more time to find that elusive “mythical” job (208 resumes/ no interview). Why shouldn’t their benefits gets extended? whats the there should be no difference between my family not going hungry and their family going hungry. My insurance benefit is roughly 1/4 of of what is used to make. It is NOT ENOUGH, but its better than nothing and I am grateful. No, it doesn’t go to my savings account. It goes to FOOD, UTILITIES and RENT!!!

  33. thomas mccollough says:

62 years old and lost my job of 19 years. In one industry for 35 years. Have never been without a job. Served my country in the military. Rec’d 26 weeks benefits. now nothing. There are no jobs. I would not take a job paying less than unemployment then. I sure as hell would now. Who is going to hire a 62 year old! I’ve worked since I was 12 and never was without a job or many times two jobs. now I would be happy with one!!!!!!!!
This country is in a lot worse shape than we are led to believe. If we don’t stop supporting half the world and fighting other people’s wars it is not going to get better. Nor will it get better is we don’t stop bailing out the big guys. The country is founded on free enterprise but the government has no help for the small businesses that this country was founded on. Now I will have to leave the work force and apply for SS. That’s not the answer and I cannot live on that. What to do??????

  34. D. Rudolph says:

When I read the following statement, “This is not a Tier 5 unemployment bill. However, this bill proposes to extend the filing deadline for existing tiers (Tiers 1- 4) of unemployment benefits until November 30, 2010″… It made me wonder its meaning. It seems like it could explain one of two things: 1) no benefits to the 99ers, and 2) those who have exhausted the Tier 4 would get an extention through November 30, 2010. Now, which one is it? We need clarity.

    • Pat in NJ says:

Just to file for the tiers and Tier 4 is just for 6 weeks…no additional weeks will be added.

  35. Reality says:

In the past 3 years my layoff time has been 15 months of which I am looking for work now.

Democrats – the extension could have been passed earlier if you agreed to take the money out of the approximately #300 + billion left in the stimulus slush fund! The Republicans offered this up and you shot it down! THIS HAS BEEN THE REAL DELAY. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE BEEN TRYING TO HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE. THIS IS THE REAL STORY, BUT THE MEDIA REFUSES TO SHOW IT TO THE AMERICAN PUBLIC.

    • 99er says:

The Republicans didn’t worry about the deficit when they bailed out thier rich buddies. They only worry about it if it’s going to regular people. Greedy Greedy Selfish A-holes!

    • anonymous says:

Reality, you are a troll and a viper and a loser. The Reptilian Party didn’t want to pass this bill because they didnt want to be blamed for adding to the deficit come time for elections. It’s politics, you inept douchebag Republican. Career poilticians protecting their jobs.

I have a joke for you. Why do Republicans think sex is bad? Because most Republicans are so embarassingly bad at sex, it really IS bad.

Except for your mom, Reality. That is one Republican dinosaur that knows how to give a blow-ie. lol Moron.

    • Reality says:

      To anonymous

What anger you have that is way over the line. I truly feel sorry for you.

  36. Richard Jolly says:

I am a 99r and know that I am not the only one. I hope and pray that they can see in their hearts to pass a tier 5, because I don’t know what I will do if they don’t. I have just exhausted my benefits, and have a well educated son who has made well enough in school to help him with going to college. He has his mind made up to be somebody, but can’t get started with no help from myself. I can hardly even now make ends meet, much less give him any support at all. It really leads a person to bad depression when you reach out and can’t get any help. Please God, if it be in your will, help them add some more weeks on my unemployment that has exhausted.

  37. Michelle says:

What about me in Oklahoma? Tier3 and I’m done. Any hope that I can get more?

  38. Pat in NJ says:

ADD A TIER 5 YOU GRREDY BASTARDS AND PASS THE DAMN BILL ALREADY!!!!

  39. Pat in NJ says:

GREEDY BASTARDS!! Sorry can’t spell when i’m upset!

GOD BLESS ALL THE UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS IN THIS COUNTRY!!!

  40. Margo House says:

I think it is our advanced technology that is taking our jobs away. There would be more jobs if we go back to the old days of using our minds and hands for labor. There would be more jobs if we didn’t have advanced easy software out there that is easy for anyone to learn there would be jobs. And if we didn’t have online stores, banking, etc there would be jobs. There would be people standing in the line at the bank instead of a couple of people. This would create jobs, also if we didn’t have automated systems to pay by phone this would create jobs.
The list goes on for advanced software outhere that is taking our jobs away.
Also there would be no outsourcing in the first place if they didn’t have computers.
It’s getting so student’s don’t even know what to major in because of our advanced technology. Also hackers are getting so smart now that they are able to shut off power completely of your television and can shut off power in your whole home. This is very dangerous especally in hot summer months because it gets hotter now ,I also think because of our advanced technology.
And this is also dangerous if we had no way of communicating with our defense department. Almost everyday hackers continue to try and hack the defenese department. I think they should ban all computers and software from businesses and consumers and only let our defense department and necessary officials to have it.
Then watch how fast jobs will grow.

  41. aspasia says:

Let right be done Congress. Add help for Tier 5 and pass the thing!

  42. aspasia says:

    Reality:

The stimulus funding is to jump start a jobs program that will enable the unemployed to find jobs. The long term benefit that will shut these republicans up about the lazy drug addicted jobless.

  43. Angel says:

All the (moral, economic, political)arguments the democrats make for the extention of the benefit to its receipients also applies to the 99ers. I’m just saying! LOL

  44. americafirst says:

I hear the Italian and Russian Mafian have job openings

  45. Kim says:

Well…BEANS….maybe you should go and get one of those jobs at McDonlad’s since you feel the 99ers are stopping you from getting your extension, then you will not have to worry about it either!

  46. Amy says:

To the idiots on here saying about people who are unemployed just milking the system. If this bill doesn’t pass or perhaps a tier 5 isn’t added and the recession double dips and you lose your job I don’t want to hear your whining butt on any message board. I am sure people in the same position as I am will agree. And for your information whoever posted about McDonalds and Walmart. Little lesson in saving money. Neither place will hire you because they are not going to waste the time, money or resources in training you because they know that you are only going to be there for a short time till something better comes along. Believe I applied at both and neither called back. I worked in the mortgage industry for eight years and have two degrees, they tell you that you are overqualified. Again anyone who is hot to trot on here and can put people down, may this impact your job and then you can really see what it feels like to be put down.

  47. scott says:

beans…walmart and mcdonalds are not hiring!! at least not in our town, my wife did get a job at mcdonalds she gets about 8 hours a week do you think you could live of that? beans you need to wake up and look around because it could be you next!

  48. Jone says:

Tier 5 is for the people who lost jobs and for the people who need to secure their jobs. All the people are linked in this economic fabric. Unless the job market is improved and wall street no longer screws the economy, competing among workers is worthless.

  49. R in Georgia says:

There’s no need in replying to the people who are on here bashing the unemployed, because they all use the same tired reasoning behind their posts. They accuse us of being lazy, and just taking what we can from the gov’t. Apparently once you get layed off, you automatically turn into a lazy, drug addicted, welfare fiend. That is what the gov’t and Republicans would like the nation to believe that we are not deserving of this. As if millions of people just decided all at the same time that they didn’t want their 401k’s anymore, or those homes they’ve been living in and paying on most of their lives. We just want that long vacation being supported by the 300 or so dollars that the gov’t can give us a week, even if it means waiting the 7 weeks without any sort of income. I mean come on people your not serious right, if this was the case and we were all just looking for the free ride, don’t you think the new job numbers would have skyrocketed after 7 weeks of no income, well it hasn’t as a matter of fact we lost 125 thousand more jobs in the month of June, but you know us we would rather go with no money than go back to work huh. Their are 3 kinds of people on these sites, trolls which if you don’t know is a person who is basically on a site to troll for reactions by posting derogatory comments, the truly unemployed or family and friends thereof. And then there are the wealthy who have no idea what it is like to be in our shoes, either way until you go months without a way to feed and provide for your family don’t claim to know about this situation.

    • S in Michigan says:

I’m in the same boat as many on this site. I’ve been unemployed since Dec. ’09 and there are no jobs that come close to what I was getting paid before. Ok, I’ll do something else. I do not care nothing about being unemployed and have taken this opportunity to make a career change. If I’m lucky, I’ll find a job in which I will be making about a quarter of what I made before which is about what I’m getting from unemployment. UNEMPLOYMENT IS NOT BIG MONEY FOLKS!! I’m not living the “high life!” Who are these people that think unemployment is a “hand out?” It’s our freakin’ money!! WE the people who worked all our lives paid in to that fund to cover us in time of crisis … hence the term “insurance!” It’s the people’s freakin’ money that the government mis-managed… the government doesn’t make money, they get it from us!!! Hello!! So why on earth is everyone snubbing their noses at those of us that want their money back?! It’s our’s!! I have been struggling to keep my home and vehicle, pay the bills, and get out of debt. I have exhausted all my savings, severance and 401K (which I will get hit for when I file 2010 taxes). I’ve been trying to get my mortgage modified and keep getting turned down. Where is the money the banks received to help us keep our homes??? Again, money that came from US the working crowd when the government was taking 33% of our wages! And now here I sit trying to figure out what on earth am I going to do if I do not get an extension. Really? After I did my due diligence, paid off bills with all my reserves, etc and for what?? So I can still get screwed by the government and the banks.

As for you folks that are still employed shooting your mouths off… I sure hope you never have to walk a mile in our shoes because with that kind of sissy mentality, you won’t make it.

God Bless everyone trying to do the right thing…. I pray for all of us that “change” happens for us soon.

  50. Jim says:

Last night I am watching the news. All about how congress is fighting over how do we pay for the tier 1 to 4 UI extension not even a tier 5. I see UI is not going down and we have still net lost millions of jobs since 08 crash. Not much has changed in 2 years UI for example in CA still well over 10%. I see no change in CA job market for last 2 years as I have not found a job. After the tiers 1 to 4 we need tier 5! Then I see a news story how we want to give 500 million to Pakistan. 500 million is not the billions needed to help long term unemployed but look at what we give worldwide and stop until we can afford it. Yet what got me was how they don’t appreciate in Pakistan the money we give them. That seems to be a common theme worldwide. We are always able to find money to give to other countries. How many billions a year? Yet what do we get countries that hate us anyway. I say cut them all off and then see how they feel. They will still hate us but not at taxpayers expense. We have money to give away to countries where people don’t appreciate it? Yet we are told by Congress no help for 99ers with tier 5 we don’t have the money for them? Well how hypocritical and what lies from Congress when they seem to pay for giving our money away to other countries before money for Americans in need? Americans come first or should with Congress but clearly don’t. So us we do stop all monies going to other countries first and then tell us we cannot pay for more UI tier 5 benefits. Ask how do we pay for so many other things to fight over not helping unemployed in America. Until we see a real improvement millions of new jobs coming back and UI % in a state back under 7% why are we cutting off the most in need yet have money to help other countries instead? We cannot help everyone Congress says we are spending too much. Show us in Congress they care about Americans enough to be honest and help Americans before anyone else gets a dime of our money. The same tax $’s many of the unemployed provided for many years but Congress gives it to other countries before the same Unemployed.

    • Linda says:

We haven’t stopped paying taxes, I don’t know about you, but I am paying income tax on my UI payments. So, even though I am unemployed and am petrified of what the future holds for me, I am helping to fund monies sent to other countries. Something sound wrong here….
