Unemployment Extension July 14, 2010 Update

July 14, 2010 by · 140 Comments

Unemployment Extension July 14, 2010 Update - Millions of unemployed Americans have been clamoring for a tier 5 unemployment extension ever since their unemployment benefits expired months ago. However, until now, July 14, 2010, no unemployment bill has been passed yet. Republicans are not in favor because they claim that the $34 billion costs associated in passing it would just add to the government’s enormous budget deficit. Technically speaking, the bill would need a majority of 60 votes in the Senate to pass.

The most urgent issue right now in the passage of this unemployment extension bill is how fast an interim senator could get appointed that would replace the late Senator Robert Byrd from West Virginia. As of the latest update, Governor Manchin could get to appoint an interim replacement by Friday at 5 p.m. ET or by Sunday the latest.

The next most important issue lies from the hands of  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on when the Senate adjourns for the week, or when they work through the weekend to file for cloture on the motion to proceed to the unemployment bill.  When the cloture motion is already“ripe” which is technically one hour after the Senate convenes on the second day after it was filed, the Senate will now need to gather votes on whether or not to continue with the debate despite Republican opposition.

We cannot do anything about it but to wait. It will all depend on these politicians on how fast will they act to pass this unemployment bill. Let’s just hope that they will prioritize it since this is one of the most important issues affecting millions of unemployed Americans.

  1. Republican parties blamed on unemployed Americans of their faults and they are proud to give much money to the wars to kill more people around the world. Republican party needs to support poor Americans and unemployed Americans who have much difficulty to get a job because of Republican made wrong decision to send jobs to the offshore or We need to get Republican party out of the house for the next elections to come.

Im not going into detail about my situation because it is probaly worse than yours and or vice verse. You people have lost your voice, you have elected these individuals, and have paided there taxes for many upon many years. It time America for a change Speak your voice, unite with one another, for god sake, if not watch as this country walks all over you and your loved ones. America needs a voice people. Speak your minds out loud to the congress, to the news stations, to the highest hills, and the lowest depths. • 2yrsandcounting. says:

It isn’t that it’s the Republicans. It is because of the two party system. Republicans do not go along with anything Democrats say, not matter what. If the Republicans wanted to pass something just as important, you can bet that the Dems would say not as well.

    • mike ward says:

Citizens of America; i regret to inform you that your all wrong, even though your intentions are good. Take both party platforms, they never agree with one another. “How can you make a change, if your taking two steps forward and three steps back”. Can you Citizens answer that? I can asure you both party platforms serve in the best interest of fatting up their own pockets, not yours. Meanwhile people like me and you, are left struggling, while they all go on vaction or god knows what. We pay taxes which payes their salary. You need to stop paying taxes and stop voting because these Party Platforms Members are robbing the America People blind. What ever happened to TREAT THY NEIGHBOR AS THY TREAT THY SELF. DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WANT DONE TO YOU. iF CONGRESS AND THE GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO ROB YOU OR US I SUGGEST WE START DOING THE SAME THING TO THEM FORCE THE GOVERNMENT TO CHANGE PEOPLE IF WE ALL RISE UP TOGETHER THEN THEY HAVE TO MAKE A CHANGE THAT BENEFITS US CITIZENS

    • Cathy says:

Republicans do not wish for those long termed unemployed to not get extensions…they just do not want to add the cost to our already outrageous debt. Republicans have suggested that the Extension Bill states that Stimulus funds from last year that are just siting around not used, be used for the extension and thus help stimulate the economy. By the way, do most people realize that we are operating on no budget right now?

  2. jp says:

when do you think they we will find out if its passed or not

  3. Employed says:

You can all bash me, I would just like to say I have a job and for the last couple of months I have been trying to hire 6 employees. They would call and I would fax them an application and never get it back. I have had 6 positions open for months on end. Guess what I have filled all of those positions since unemployment was cut off. Well lookie here what is up with that??? You guys have to search for employment while receiving unemployment and you call and act all interested just so you can fill out your paperwork for that week. What a waste of my time!! The republicans are just digusted as am I. Obama has made situations worse!! For petes sake Obama could care less about you people open your eyes!!

    • Dave says:

I agree and thats bull for an employer to deal with. Unemployment has to many gaps in the program. There are people like myself. I worked at the Railroad since I was 22 years old and have no other experience to offer an employer. When I apply at a no skills/no education job (like a convenience store or fast food), they basically tell me ive made to much money in the past and basically tell me No right there in the interview, that I would be a risk! I have gone back and am taking classes at the community college. I dont expect to be supported until I finish but my job was deleted from the RRX and will not be back. I will be evicted in two weeks and will finish my summer classes online at the Public library. Obama is the one blocking unemployment without getting it paid for. Dont be decieved.

What is the job you are offering, what State and how much are you compensating? Is it full time are there benefits? What is the name of your company? Could you be more specific?

Also don’t assume it’s the same for everyone. However truly interested in this job offer you have. Please respond. Thank you

    • watasham says:

How nice for you “employed”. Have you thought to yourself you you and your unfillable position may too become unemployed? what do you think 4 out of five people for every job are going to do without EUC?? well guess what… they now qualify for welfare wheras before they didnt with that whopping 250.00 a week! regardles of what type of spending it is, it will be spending… would you rather theydrain the tax dollar on welfare or pay taxes on a benefit in which they paid into for years and years many times over than what they’ve collected. It is ignorant imbeciles like you that are deamonizing the unemployed even though they are in the situation due to negligence on the part of the GOP. Just wait until India comes to you for training and usurps your job, and all you get is a “Thank you for training your replacements overseas, good luck” What goes around comes around and you are next you fool!

    • Just became employed says:

Employed you are a dumbass, my last tier lapsed the last week of last month and I wasn’t able to pay rent. I was fortunate enough to get hooked up with a job but it doesn’t pay until the previous month because of the pay schedule. I have only worked one day and am still eligible to collect payments, but by the time I get payed i will be backed up 3 months of rent, light and other things are headed off this upcoming week if this bill isn’t passed immediately. Your a jackass if you think the people on the forums are lazy and want to live off the government. And I look at the time of your post it’s 4:35AM. Don’t you have to work today? What are you doing up on a forum making assenine statements at that time. Your a jackass who’s probably a Joe the Plumber with no company owned and in no position to hire anyone. Keep your Obama bashing dumbass off forums of civilized hardworking people who payed into the system but aren’t getting a return on they’re investment. You are truly a misinformed idiot jackass, you duchebag!

    • SUKME U BASTARD says:

you stupid individual!!!! YOUR A STUPID INDIVIDUAL!!! FUCK U AND YOUR JOBS!!! FIRST AND FOREMOST I WOULD RATHER CONTINUE SEARCHING FOR A JOB THAT PAYS FAR MORE THAN THE UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS I RECIEVE!!! YOUR PROBABLY OFFERING LESS THAN THEIR EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS ARE GIVING THEM!! AND I BE DAMNED TO GO TO WORK EVERYDAY FOR A IGNORANT BOSS LIKE YOU!!! I HAVE HAD JOB OFFERS ONLY TO BE TOLD I WOULDN’T HAVE BENEFITS AND THEY WERE SEVERELY UNDERCUTTING MY PREVIOUS SALARY AND IM A NURSE SPECIALIST FOR PEDIATRICS. IT IS VERY TOUGH OUT HERE. YOU CANT JUST GO AND WORK FOR JOE SMUCK CAUSE HE OFFERED YOU A DAMN JOB. NOT WHEN YOUR IN SCHOOL BETTERING YOUR EDUCATION AND RAISING A DAMN FAMILY!!! DUDE TAKE YOUR REPUBLIC ASS SOMEWHERE AND BLOW A SHERMAN TANK BARREL TILL IT BUST!!I TELL YOU WHAT YOU COME TO DAYTON OHIO AND SEE WHAT I SEE AND I BET YOU WONT SAY THAT IGNORANT SHIT!!! AS A MATTER OF FACT LET THESE REPUBLIC LUSH PUPPIES NOT PASS THIS NEXT BILL AND I GUARANTEE THEY WILL HAVE PUSHED THIS COUNTRY TO THE MAX ON PATIENCE. CAUSE I KNOW A FEW FOLKS RIGHT NOW THAT ARE REALLY THINKING ABOUT THROWING THERE LIVES AWAY TO PROVE A POINT TO CONGRESS RIGHT NOW.

    • your a nimrod says:

what six jobs asshole, what do they pay, state the information and i will investigate!

    • CynicLgrrl says:

Around here, the only job openings are for temp or part time jobs.(seriously. 6-10 hours a week @ minimum wage?) –with interviews few and far between, that barely puts gas in the tank. When you’re working in a time crunch to pay for rent, food and basic essentials this can be impossible. Smug people act like you can just run out and get 5 of these jobs in a small time frame (as though getting the ONE interview wasn’t a miracle in and of itself) and that that 6-10hr a week, minimum wage job is gonna cover everything. They also act like you’re not already cleaning toilets and washing cars and selling your belongings to make ends meet.
What kinda positions were you offering? What were the wages? Hell yeah..people are desperate now. Now they have to settle on the ONE pt job and be homeless. Otherwise that’s making just enough money to get you nowhere and make you lose your food assistance too.

    • Dee says:

  4. scott says:

The news never gets it right, and there is no Tier 5 with this extension, theres not even a thought of one in the senate. check my other comment july 16.

  5. VIc says:

@ Mike…U r A DUmb Ass Obama is the one forwarding the UI bill extension…If Bush were inplace u would probably only get the 6 months alloted..Thank God we have a President that is even thinking about this sh*6T. My UI ran out last week and I have good credit that will now turn bad becuase I’m going to be late on payments perhaps I can’t make any payments at all. I’ve worked all my life in Investment Banking as an Assistant and was laid of while 5 months preggers.. I just got a chance to look for work since having a baby in September 2009. I had dreams of owning a home this year and keeping my good credit..now this will go downhill..thank god I have a strong mate during this time..but I’m stressed with no income. ALl the jobs I have interviewd for have fallen thru due to companies changing thier mind to hired within..how Fucked up is that…I’m no doubt the interview quuen ans neva had a problem gettin a job in MY LIFE!

  6. VIc says:

Pls pass the BIll next wee. For the luv of God! We all need that extra time to find work

  7. Sandra O says:

I am a 60 year old women unemployed for a year now–one interview in all that time–with the job market so tight what do you think my chances are for finding a job–Seriously!!! Yet I keep trying. Please pass this bill for my family and all the families out there that are struggling and truly need this right now!!!

  8. Julie from KCMo says:

I was laid off my banking job for 8 yrs 4-09 and I have education, experience and want to work. I have been told I am over qualified which is ridiculous, when the government will pay me to go back to school and get more education but won’t pay the extended unemployment until I find a job but will pay for the extra education. The job interviews I have had tell me I’m over qualified!!!!! I have a job interview tomorrow and I pray I get it and I don’t hear I’m over qualified it makes me sick. I haven’t had unemployment for a month and my bills and rent are already a month late!!!! I am 49 and I have paid into that unemployment all of my adult life. It makes me sick to my stomach that the government bails out big business but waits for their vacations to even vote!!!! PLEASE EXTEND TO TIER 5 OR MORE WHAT EVER IT TAKES MIDDLE CLASS AMERICANS NEED THE INSURANCE THEY PAID INTO THEIR ADULT LIFE! NOW NOT LATER!!!!!

    • Karen Windsor says:

They are partially paying people to go to school and then when they get out – along with not having a job they also have additional debt that cannot be paid.

  9. Jane says:

The only other thing I’m thinking is before I had my last job as a tech writer with ACS, I was a realtor. I think about going back but it’s $2,000. to get started between the CE classes, MIBOR fees, tech fees, desk fees etc not to mention starting over with marketing, trying to get referrals and who is really buying right now.

If I try to go back to real estate and even if I don’t get paid, I think you loose your unemployment… I don’t quite get that either.

Hope I hear from this gentlemen who had 6 positions to offer… wonder where that wonderful job is? Good night all. Let’s just all say a little prayer tonight.

    Night

    • Karen Windsor says:

He’s just another blowhard that has no f-ing idea the situation that people are in.

  10. kari says:

We need this tier 5 !!!! i have never ever been in this horrible postion . PLEASE HEAR US OUT AND GIVE US THE TIER 5

    • Karen Windsor says:

According to everything I’ve read on the internet and on state workforce sites there will not be a Tier 5. Also, if you are new to UI you will receive 26 weeks and 26 weeks only. I HOPE THAT EVERYONE IS WRONG – BUT IT ISN’T LOOKING GOOD FOR THE LONGTIME UNEMPLOYED OR THE NEWLY UNEMPLOYED. This is being WAY TOO optimistic – but it would literally be Christmas in July if Tier 5 is passed. Please note: I haven’t celebrated Christmas in many years due to my lack of a job. I’m living off lower than basic means – have lost everything I own. Having UI ISN’T A BIG PARTY OR HOLIDAY. I’d like to be able to smile……just dreaming I guess.

  11. your a nimrod says:

lets go employed, what jobs? another republican plant, lets see your hand employed.

  12. mary says:

I hope they pass the unemployment extension soon, But I already lost my health insurance because I didn’t have the money to pay for it. I am 53 and have worked all my life since I was 16 And now that I have been unemployed for a little over a year they decided to take there time passing a bill that would have us at least have money for gas to go look for a job. They are people collecting welfare that have never worked but they got they checks. I hope we all remember this when we have to vote in November.

    • Kevin says:

I’m 53 as well and I might as well be 83 because all the resumes I send in and the few interviews I get I am shunned due to my age. Been paying into the unemploy. ins. for 30 plus years and this is what the no-clue republicans give me? I’m from Indiana and of course Sen Lugar voted Nay on the Unemploy. Ins. extension. Get those Republicans out of office–QUICK! Vote them OUT next election!

    • mike ward says:

You have the right idea; however, your sending the wrong message. Yes this government is screwing us over as each day passes. They have screwed me as well, with this unemployment b.s.. I have lost my home, possesions, and had to drop out of school because of backed up bills. Im sure alot of the American People are going through the same thing. And welfare is b.s., why cant we recall welfare? The point im trying to make is why vote? All your doing is putting another thief in office. YOur best off running for office, if you want change.

  13. employed should be shot says:

employed should be bashed in the head with several large rocks. I’m going to serve my country soon and I have been unemployed for quite a while. you got a bashing all right. your ass deserved the fucking middle ages kinda execution. hot boiling salt water or torture. water board his ass.

    • mike ward says:

Good luck with serving our country. I have served four years active duty in the Army. It was not the best of times, when i got injured in my fourth year they honarable discharged me. Some Government please sir dont do it for the money or the benefits. Do it for the right reasons and do not allow them to brain wash you. Because soon there will be a war in this country, and you will more or less have to pick a side to stand on. Good luck. Remember to always speak your mind. dont tolerate shit from these Platforms Members that control the government !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. get real says:

The 99ers have been considered the parasites feeding off of road kill. Even the present unemployed have made their smirks—–until THEY becpme a 99er………Hmmmmmm……extensions only through November…..and WHEN are elections????? Just long enough to get the votes to keep THEIR jobs…..after that …….good luck….all unemployed will be SOL……then watch as millions of AMERICANS take to the streets. Like the sign states, “Get in, sit down, buckle up, shut up, and hold on”……….AMERICANS will take to the streets in more ways than with just tents!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. jimmy says:

WE NEED A TIER V NOW HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE MUST GO HOMELESS BENEFITS FOR ALL UNEMPLOYED THE YOUNG AND THE OLD> THE JOB MARKET IS THE SAME FOR EVERYONE>HOW MANY VACATIONS WILL DC TAKE BEFORE THEY CAN SEE NEED OF THE UNEMPLOYED> WHAT EVER HAPPEN to HUMAN RIGHTS OR DOESNT THAT COUNT HERE IN THE U.S.A

  16. Dave says:

Im only on Tier 2 but if its not passed this week, im fxcked!

  17. juliel says:

I’m a 26 weeker, my next check will be my last if they don’t extend it. My resume, which alwats got me interviews till the last year or 2 isn’t getting me ANYTHING here in No. CA. Too many applying for the few jobs, regardless of the pay being half of what we need here to survive. Driving an old beat up car, bald tires, engine light on, keeping a roommate who pays rent regularly who should be on medication & therapy, shopping at the dollar store for food (ick, it’s all processed) and not going anywhere or doing anything that’s not free, I feel like I can’t even afford to get in the car to go volunteer in my few spae hours when I’m not looking for work. Spent the last few weeks at night poring over the internet’s stories of this extension business, learned WAY MORE than I EVER wanted to know about how ineffective our government is. I learned that tho ones we “elected” are being paid 7 times what I earned while I was working, but now thru next week (while still in UE) they’ll be paid 14 times what I make. If they don’t extend it, what’s the math say? AND they get lifer bennies that I NEVER even dreamed of having. So how is it that they REPRESENT US? We need to do some strong, hard work on redesigning how WE THE PEOPLE want to BE represented, and work to change that while the 2 party system falls apart, or it will get worse without us!

    • Karen Windsor says:

Its funny that our government officials are the ones that want to cut Social Security, food stamps, UI, – basically anything that we need just to survive on AND THEY LIVE WITH LIFETIME BENEFITS. This is the fudge on their ice cream, as most of them are independently wealthy. I don’t poo poo anyone that has wealth, but WTF!!!! They get benefits and we GET NOTHING?

    • Karen Windsor says:

My daughter lives in Los Angeles and has a business degree. She is 29 and has FOUR JOBS.

  18. Cathy says:

I have been unemployed for 18 months now…..finding a job is not easy. In this time period, I have only had three interviews. I, too, need my extensions. But please everyone, get your facts straight. Do not point fingers at Republicans…..get all the facts. The Democrats and especially the president, will say to blame the Republicans. But here is the truth. They too agree that the millions of unemployed need further assistance at this time….but not at the expense of adding more and more to our national debt. They have suggested that funds set aside from the hefty Stimulus Package of ’09….which are just sitting around being used for nothing, be used for the extension. This way the economy is “stimulated” as needed, and we do not add to our continually growing debt. Sounds like a plan to me…..since their is no budget for the extension. For that matter, do most of you know, that there is no budget at all?

  19. DeeDee says:

I am over 60. I lost my job in Sept 2008, and the unemployment benefits have helped. However during this period I lost my home, and my credit became horrible. I have a Bank Operations Mgmt background, but with bad credit I cannot even get a job in a customer service call center. I really need an extension in the unemployment benefits. WHAT DOES ONE DO WHEN ALL EMPLOYERS ARE USING YOUR CREDIT SCORE AS THE ONLY CRITERIA FOR OFFERING A POSITION??
