Clamor for Tier 5 Unemployment Benefits Continues

July 29, 2015 by · 54 Comments

Unemployment Extension for 99ers: Clamor for Tier 5 Unemployment Benefits Continues – For so long, the United States of America is known as a country of hope. People usually have a tendency to migrate to USA because they believe that they will have a better life. However, because of the economic recession, so many people are left unemployed. While the other half of the unemployed are cheering in the passage of the HR4213 unemployment extension bill, the rest are still in agony as there are no Tier 5 unemployment benefits for them.

So called the 99ers or those that have received 99 weeks of their unemployment benefits in all their available Tiers (Tier 1 to Tier 4), these unemployed individuals will continue to suffer losing their homes, savings, resources, food, and dignity. It’s not that they are couch potatoes in finding a job as what others say, it’s just that there are no jobs available in the market. What are they supposed to do? How are they going to survive?

A 99er emailed us recently to voice out his opinion. We want to publish it here hoping that our politicians, especially the Republicans can hear it and take immediate actions in passing a Tier 5 unemployment extension bill.

“We, the unemployed are not a football to be passed from one politician to another. We are a group of long term faceless citizens who have exhausted all available weeks of unemployment benefits from Tiers 1 to 4. Some of us have been without any income since March and are still unable to find employment up until now because of age discrimination and unavailability of jobs. We are actually spending almost every day trying to find work by sending out resumes and applying for various jobs. However, most of the time we don’t even receive an acknowledgement that our resumes and applications were received.

There are well over four million of us, and that number continues to grow each week as more people join our plight. Lots of us have no health insurance… Many of us have gone through all of our savings, and have had to pay penalties to withdraw our retirement IRA’s in order to try and survive. As a last resort, some are selling their blood to blood banks so they can feed their families. Congress has made our American dream become an American nightmare.

Congress has bailed out the banks, auto manufacturers, AIG and Wall Street in general using billions of funds; they have sent money millions to Haiti, they have spent billions on two wars and no one worried about the deficit. How come now that the Republicans worry too much of the deficit where millions suffer? Now, to help people who elected Washington into office, Congress argues over where the money will come from and forcing us all into poverty. We want to be recognized as the hard working Americans we once were. You have taken away our dignity, our love for our country and the faith we once had for the lawmakers we voted into office.

This country desperately needs this bill to be passed immediately with tier 5 and the previous Cobra Premium Assistance Program. The fact that unemployment is at an all-time high, there is a good possibility that without Government help, there will be a double dip recession. Nobody wants to be unemployed anywhere in this country. In the first place, how can people concentrate on the duty of seeking work  if they worry they won’t have a roof over their head, a phone that may be disconnected, food for their family or their car to get to the interview while dodging the repossession man?

Extending Tier 5 and extending the Cobra Premium Assistance Program would benefit those who, despite their best efforts, have been trying to find employment for over two years now. Yes, that’s right – two years. Flipping burgers at McDonald’s is not a job to keep ones head above water, and if this bill is not passed, we will have half the population serving burgers to the other half….It would be a very sad commentary for all of us! We are all calling for Congress to pass a Tier 5 Unemployment extension Bill for all of us 99ers.”

If you are one of those 99ers, we encourage you to keep sending emails, letters, and phone calls to your state Senators to push them to pass a Tier 5 unemployment extension bill. Continue signing the Petition for Tier 5 unemployment extension bill.

The time for a revolution has come… The Gov’t only can control us by dividing us. Don’t let them. Don’t let them send our children off to die in another BS War for nothing other then oil money. I’m a fellow 99er and will do everything I can to throw monkey wrenches in this BS System.
Don’t trust the Media as their only lap dogs for the govt.
Republican or Democrat, it’ all the same thing, two parties divide Americans. We need a leader that has the right connections to start the revolution… this will separate the men from the boy’s… We have our work cut out… ready to roll!

    • Bikergirl says:

Vote ALL of them out! Obama’s ass don’t want to listen, but, he won’t have to in two years which is too long for me! I can’t wait to throw ALL incumbents out! Then, we can get his weak ass out too. Think people! The DEMOCRATS did NOT want to give this extension to you either! What do you think they will do after the elections? They will be safe then. Then they will show us their true colors and deny us too! Unbelieveable what they are doing to the 99ers! The all need to go! I don’t trust ANY of them! The Republicans don’t want us to have anything unless you are rich and the Democrats want to sell us shit! Can’t wait to take their damn jobs too!

Fellow 99’ers, just like you I’m not looking for a handout. How can we force a bill that forces employers to hire applicants over 50 first or be penalized? If they decide not to hire us then they would have to disclose a detailed explanation. Just like an “Older Aged Affirmative Action” bill. Age Discrimination is being swept under the rug and we have to fight back. All ethnic backgrounds prevail with this. Lets Roll!

The senate and House are doing a great job; are those tax breaks for you and your friends. Wait till you are in the unemployment and see how many friends you have. You people just don’t get; you could lose eveything in a heart beat. This problem has been going on for at least 25 years if not more. The company I used to work for began moving to Juarez; then China. None of this is new to me. The only difference I’m labeled a 99er. In my fifties; at least my son was raised before all this hardship started; I’m sorry for all those with young children to feed and clothe. Our government needs to send back all illegals. These people get free everything while we as Americans who’ve paid into the system; “GET NOTHING” Come November you will be out; in 2 more years we’ll get the rest of you. “May GOD BLESS OUR COUNTRY.”

  3. tim1955 says:

Now that letter sums it all up and very well. It won’t be until the millions of 99ers are sleeping under bridges before Congress will acknowledge our existence, and then we will only be a homeless problem. And a lot of those homeless will be young children.

I am employed and my wife is not as she lost her job in the beginning of this NIGHTMARE. She has worked her whole life starting in her teen yrs went to school and graduated top of her class heck was even in the paper for it ! She worked in the mortgage business as a senior mortgage processor and was one of the first to get laid off. And as a strong woman as she is she has for 2yrs been trying to no avail to get back to work. I’m scared now tho no savings, 4 kids no job for her yet, no unemployment tier 5 and only my income to keep us alive, we are in jeopardy of losing our house they want to shut off our power etc. I catch her at times crying and have to hear her say to me she feels useless because she can’t help I try to reassure her just her effort is plenty. Truly the sad part is that we both have been and I still am paying taxes and the money the people of power are holding hostage is OUR MONEY THE WORKING AND LAID OFF PEOPLE OF AMERICA!!!!! WE THE PEOPLE WANT OUR MONEY. WE WANT MORE OUR JOBS BACK!

  6. Homeless says:

I’ve been homeless for months even before the unemployment ran out. Couldn’t make ends meet.

My area in Pennsylvania has exceeded it’s limits on
    funding – everywhere.
Two shelters have swelled so bad that they can only accept
families with children and can’t even house them anymore.
One shelter has only a 1 month stay and always full–then it’s hit the streets again. Even people there suffered from mental illness and disability, not just unemployment and homelessness. I called for action in our community for a refugee camp or tent-city
to be built somewhere here, but got ignored. Things are only going to get worse!! There is no place to go….

Don’t believe anyone can just go on monetary Welfare.
    These are the criteria:
    Must have dependents or,
    Must be disabled or,
Must be victimized in Domestic Violence or,
    Must be pregnant
If you do not fit one of these criteria, you may
not receive monetary Welfare. You may, however,
    qualify for food stamps.
And, what difference does it make anyway if
unemployment gets drained or Welfare gets drained?
This makes no sense to me even if the average person
    could receive Welfare..

I’ve tried for 2 1/2 years to get employed. Blue-collar
or white-collar. They don’t respond 98-99% of the time.
Those that do, complain they have 300-500 applicants, don’t
want someone who has been out of work for a long time,
don’t have the experience-even for a mediocre job like
fast-food and retailing. They have hundreds of “internal” candidates to choose from, but legally have to post the job. Jobs have been cancelled even after interviewing. I know at age 59, I already have a strike against me.

Homeless women I met out on the street have been thrown out by their own families or spouses. So, you can’t count
on family and even less on friends to take care of you.

All our community resources have complained that they are
bankrupt and exceeded their monetary resource limits….

Thanks to the Bush Administration and our government for getting us into this mess. We went to war and took care of the world when the job slow-down started all the way back with 911–and they continued to say the economy was fine. Bull!! Jobs even then were getting harder and harder to find and land, growing worse all these years. Plus they ignored Economists. People were already
cashing in 401Ks, not because they were scared of banks
collapsing, but because they already needed the money!

Your next step, hit the streets or live in your car and eat in soup kitchens..Like me (with a college degree)
    RECESSION to DEPRESSION…..

The last thing someone who is unemployed needs to be told is that they shouldn’t even apply for the limited number of job openings that are available. But some companies and recruiters are doing just that.
Employment experts say they believe companies are increasingly interested only in applicants who already have a job.
“I think it is more prevalent than it used to be,” said Rich Thompson, vice president of learning and performance for Adecco Group North America, the world’s largest staffing firm. “I don’t have hard numbers, but three out of the last four conversations I’ve had about openings, this requirement was brought up.”
Some job postings include restrictions such as “unemployed candidates will not be considered” or “must be currently employed.” Those explicit limitations have occasionally been removed from listings when an employer or recruiter is questioned by the media though.
That’s what happened with numerous listings for grocery store managers throughout the Southeast posted by a South Carolina recruiter, Latro Consulting.

  8. Brandi says:

Looking at some posts, I realize why people are complaining and wanting their unemployment extension checks. BECAUSE THEY MAKE MORE OFF OF UNEMPLOYMENT THAN I AM, AND I HAVE A JOB!!!!!!!! What kind of bullsh*t is this?? Suck up your STUPID pride and go find yourself a nice minimum wage job (and TRUST me, they’re out there). WORK and stop living off the government. I really dislike self-important people with an overdeveloped sense of entitlement.

    • d. daniels says:

I’m a 99er 54 years old white woman; I’m not a minority I’ve been working since I was 12 years old. I’ve never had a problem finding employment until now. I’d take any job I’m not above cleaning toilets or picking up trash as long as I get paid. I’ve never asked for help before. Even when my son was young I did not ask for reduced lunches at school, because I was working and felt that other people needed it more than I did. My budget was tight, I made it thru those hard times; if overtime was available I worked every hour I could to make ends meet. I worked with an african american male who made 2x’s the money I did, his wife was a nurse, he bragged about getting reduced lunches for his children. I thought to myself you are the problem not the solution; obviousy he had no pride. I do not feel I’m entitled to anything. The only time I’ve asked for help is now, and can’t get it. By the way I was also divorced and rarely received any child support from my job-hopping ex-husband. I already have 3 strikes against 1. a 99er,2. age. 3. race; I’d rather have a job; my self-esteem and pride have been shattered. People like you make bad situations worse. I have the good LORD above on my side and I pray every night for some relief; worrying and scared to death about what the future holds for myself, my son, and others who are in my position probably a tougher situation. We need the tier 5 extension; we’ve lost enough already May GOD BLESS US ALL

    • Bikergirl says:

Bitch please! I took a minimum wage job making $8.25 per hour! Far from my engineering job of $16.50 per hour only to be laid off again because the company is downsizing. I dislike bitches who don’t know what the hell they are talking about!

    • charles says:

Hey Brandi, You have no idea what you are talking about. Unemployed people are not able to find minmimum wage jobs – DO SOME RESEARCH before you post a response that
insulsts long-term unemployed people. Your way of thinking is completely off-base from what is happening with the job market. There are not enough jobs to go around for everyone right now! No matter what the salary is (entry level or not). So, here is some advice for you Brandi, Stop pointing your finger at us and stick it up your butt – then sit and spin!

    • Ed says:

      Brandi,

You are judgmental and ignorant, and most likely, do not possess the skills, brains and education to land yourself a nice paying job. You accepted the job, deal with your salary. Unemployment compensation is based on the employee’s quarterly earnings and if that turns out to be more than what you are receiving now, that is your problem, not ours. And that does not translate to being “self-important with an overdeveloped (wrong word to use)sense of entitlement”. Go back to school and learn some new skills, if you are capable of that!

    • Travisnc says:

Brandi, Obviously you and husband/pimp sell crack to make ends meet. I can tell by your intellect and vocabulary. You are the future of the middle class and that’s sad! Now go sell your crack, pimp your body and make your $8.25 an hour so you look legitimate.

    • Mia says:

Brandi, you’re way out of line. People have swallowed their pride ages ago. Employers are not hiring someone over the age of 40 to work in a fast food place or even a retail store with all the experience they have. It’s much tougher finding a job after 40 now and if you are over 50, it’s even worse. Grow up and smell the coffee.

d.daniels, umm, race is not against you, yet you seem to need to bring it up. 99er, age and race: I’ll take the first two, but the last one is stupid. Unemployment for minorities is a lot worse than whites. Don’t make subtle digs about people when everyone needs to stand together. Oh yes, I haven’t been working since I was 12, I actually started before that on my family’s farm and in the family store. NO child labor laws when it comes to family! I’m a 42 year old AMERICAN woman. I’ve been working for as long as I can remember. I’ve never accepted a handout from anyone, and child support was something to dream about from my ex husband. I have two children that I raised on my own and am putting through college, though with being out of work for the last two years because of a department layoff my daughter has had to take out loans. I pray for all of us, and then go back to

    • TLK says:

      Brandi –

You, my dear, are an idiot. Most of the unemployed have paid into the system for years and are getting their own money back out, they’re not “living off the government.” NOBODY makes more money in unemployment than they did in their former jobs. If you’re going to try and sound intelligent, get your facts straight.

And remember, Karma is, in fact, a bitch.

    • SE says:

LET ME KNOW WHERE I CAN GET THESE JOBS AT, BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN TO MACDONALD’S, WENDY’S, KFC AND THEY WERE NOT HIRING SO PLEASE U MAY KNOW SOMETHING I DON’T KNOW IFORMED, I WILL APPREICATE IT THANKS

    • Mark says:

Brandi, you are an idiot………….people make approximately 30% of what they made at their previous job if that…………..If all you make is min wage, you have nobody to blame but yourself………….should have stayed in school and got a degree………….

  9. Sean O'brien says:

…wow…we have a lot of friends and family out of work. This whole failure with extending any benefit for any American is appalling…and every Politician we gave a job to should be fired!ESPECIALLY Republicans! They give our freedom and life long unemployment away to Iraq and Afghanistan and now Pakistan! And Pakistan is giving it to the Taliban! What a bunch of selfish men in Washington-VOTE out ALL incumbents before they Privatise our entire country for themselves! Then Hang them!!!!

  10. Marshall Wright says:

I am a 99er. In 2 weeks I will hit the point of no return. The point where I really start losing. It seems as though Washington does not want to do anything or start a process until 10 million people have reached the point to where they have lost everything. This is not good business. People spend a lifetime working to have something and now they will lose it all. What kind of an investment is that? Isn’t the Government supposed to invest in the people. There are a lot of dead beats who are rolling in the happy times and relishing in their pathetic life style of laziness and drugs. I’m talking about those people who receive Government checks and who are capable of contributing but are excused because of their so-called disability or whatever their excuse is. I am sure many of us can live with this injustice but, please help those American citizens who want to work and pay their taxes. We have got to stop putting non-American citizens in front of the line. Make them become a citizen of the United States and let the struggling Americans have at least one day in the field picking tomatoes so that they can at least pay their utility bills. It is time for Washington to draw the line in the sand. All those American politicians for a prosperous America, Stand and be recognized. All liars please leave and go to another country, how about Nicaragua. I can tell you I have been hitting the pavement hard, real hard. Something of which our politicians have no experience at. I can tell you from personal experience that finding employment is very difficult, especially at the age of 57. There are a lot of people with university education who are facing extreme poverty, while the uneducated person basks in smiles and grins because now they can tell us how unimportant college is. The uneducated like to step all over higher education. I grew up on the streets and I put myself through university. I know what I am talking about. I think that the word JOBS will have to be branded on our politician’s heads so when they look at each other they will have an agenda to stay focused on. Obama needs to step up to the plate and not ask but, tell the house that something needs to be done. Not tomorrow but, today. I have a message for Nancey Pelossi; alot of people will lose a lot from this particular historical event but remember, history will remember the actions of our politicians and the decisions they made. So let not the politicians think that it is over when they die. The truth lies within the historical content, and if Obama goes down, you all go down because, republicans and democrats are suffering. It is a bi-partisan decision without party bias that will solve this problem. So stop bickering over glory and get the job done. Stop the petty politics and find a solution. Exercise your mind and be creative. Wars are useless because they create expenses with little to no profit, which is bad business. It makes no sense to build a house for someone who does not care about you while your own house falls into dis-repair. When I close this short commentary and return to searching for a job, I will have to bite the bullet again, hit the pavement and, fill out application number 300 or so. I have lost count. I have lost count. I do have hope. I believe in myself. I have an inward strength that says no to failure. No to rejection. No to those who think they can intimidate or dis-respect. The day will come when I shall stand upon that high mountain and look back at my accomplishments. I am free because, I know what truth is and I understand what it means to be moral. It is time to utilize the pick and shovel with a little bit of ink and paper. I ask that our politicians roll up their sleeves and get the job done. Time is running out!

    • d. daniels says:

Our grand- children will know about the years 2007 thru ?;what shall this period be known as. Who will take responsibility for our economic downfall? Having a good education is a good thing. I would never make fun of someone for that, that shows an inner strength with great qualities. I’ve heard people make fun of people with great educations, I didn’t chime in, just listened. A little less less talk and alot more doing. They were a bunch of jealous backstabbers. The same people who have jobs today lower paying uneducated jobs; that is where you will hear the most griping. We 99ers do need a tier 5 extension and maybe a 6 or 7 one too. The economy won’t straighten out for quite some time. This will afford time to be retrained for another position. So both parties step up to the plate and start taking care of America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. al.the 99er says:

I’m a 99er like many hard workers , I submit my resume at least 3 times a day ,and am running out of places to apply to. I like a lot of 99ers were hoping that the new extension included everyone that has been affected by this from the beginning .Unfortunately it does not ,for that to be we need to include a Tier 5. If you worry for the people that the monies have stopped for or will stop for in the upcoming weeks grate we should worry, but now what about us (the 99ers) our checks stopped many weeks to mounts ago , and the number of people that fall in to the class of the 99ers is still growing, I have worked for more than 11 years without collecting one cent, and i know many people that have worked much longer than I ,and now that we need the help the same help that we paid for with our years of payment in to the unemployment insurance, it means nothing .
99 weeks max to collect is set in but no max on how much we pay in is set .Why is it that after every year our totals means nothing?. All we want is to have money to eat, pay our bills, put gas in our cars or have money for the bus to be able to go out and look for work .It is a fact that The monies given back to us will end up in our community , And its a fact that it helps local business so they don’t have to close there doors , and add to the numbers of the unemployed .We paid in shouldn’t it count for something now that we need it .how can we be forgotten if one day you to can be standing in the the same place as I and many hard workers A.K.A the “99ers”stand now .I like many others never expected to be laid off for this long, and neither will you .so please help your fellow man so when the day comes we can help you thank you for letting me vent and taking the time to read this from a 99er

  12. Eric says:

Wake up congress!! people are getting desperate!! Pass more tiers than just tier five!! People are going to start looting grocery stores like they do in third world countries. How pathatic will that be just to feed our famalies!!

  13. Michelle says:

I can’t believe all my years of paying taxes faithfully and electing people in office thinking that they are for the people has really surprise me doing this recession and I’m 45 yrs of age. I have had a job since I was 16 years old and now that times are hard I can’t get HELP to take care of my family. IT IS REALLY HARD FOR ME TO BELIEVE THAT THIS IS HAPPENING. I HAVE GONE INTO MY LIFE SAVING FOUR TIMES FOR BIG AMOUNT AND NOW THAT I’M GETTING REALLY REALLY LOW. (I HAVE FAITHFULLY BEEN LOOKING FOR WORK FOR ABOUT A YEAR N A HALF AND HAS NOT HAD ANY SUCCESS IN LANDING AT LEAST ONE JOB. I’M WILLING TO START OVER AND ALL I NEED IS THAT ONE ONE ONE OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY MYSELF. I BELIEVE I CAN DO ANYTHING THAT IS THROWN AT ME WITH JUST A LITTLE TRAINING. POLITICIANS, YOU GUYS HAVE TO HELP THE ONES WHO HELP THIS COUNTRY BY PAYING TAXES. I’M NOT ASKING FOR A LIFETIME HELP. JUST TO PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY TO ALLOW ME TO SEEK THAT JOB THAT I BELIEVE IS OUT THERE WAITING FOR ME. HELP US HELP US I AM ONE THAT TRULY NEEDS THE HELP

  14. S. Gaskins says:

I am writing the president regarding a tier V for the unemployed.

Unemployment compensation is an insurance that I paid into all my working life and used very rarely. How devastating it was to be excluded from receiving extended unemployment benefits because I have exhausted tier 4. I’m still unemployed even though I have worked as a legal secretary for most of my life. I am presently 50 years old, single, and I am losing everything I worked so hard for. I can’t afford to pay my credit card bills which will in turn harm my credit score. I cannot afford to pay my car insurance which will affect my driving privileges. This is just a few things that are happening in my life due to unemployment, my inability to secure a job, and no tier 5 benefits to help me survive during this difficult time. How unfair this present law is not to include the people who are still unemployed after one year and a half, and suffering great hardship.

I ask for your leadership and support in getting congress to appropriate funds for the continued unemployed like me, who have exhausted their benefits and are suffering.

Thank you, Mr. President, for all you do for the American people.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND GOD BLESS!

  15. Jason says:

There is also the question of age discrimination in the employment process and it’s hard to prove. Most people report on our site that they have worked 30 years or more and many have reported age discrimination.

  16. Jerone says:

What this country needs is a redistribution of assets. Public work project should provide employment to area unemployed. The super rail project is a great idea. Even better if every city that will have a terminal starts building towards the other cities. Stop using machines that cost 100k+ and employ people that have families to raise. Make those of us that are unemployed responsible for the mantiance and upkeep of our neighborhood public spaces, painting bridges and grass care. We pay taxes and are willing to work. Also give squatter rights to those who are willIng to live in and repair homes that have been vacant over 5 years. Or start a business in a vacant location. People can’t start business or buy homes because the banks and insurance companies own everything and have to be paid first. They were bailed out and treat the people worse than ever. We are America not them we need help the lives of our children are at risk not stockholder dividends.

  17. Audrey says:

The economy here in Memphis, TN is horrible. We are still seeing companies lay off workers & close down. There are a lot of misconceptions & ignorance concerning these unemployment extensions. We do need them. I was laid off my job as a supervisor for a telecommunications company (of 3yrs) June 2008. That company permanently closed in June 2010. I was a full-time employee with benefits & insurance. Now, I have no benefits or health insurance. My savings & mutual fund has been depleted as well. I have applied for 100’s of jobs in & out of state. I have been networking & letting friends, family, acquaintances, & strangers know that I am looking for a job. I’ve had several interviews. It took me over 1 entire year to finally get a job that only offered me part-time hours. That job paid me less than half of my previous job. Then they laid off everyone that was less than 90 days employed there. Once, again I was laid off due to reduction in force. I was only there for 6 weeks. Unemployment compensation does not allow you to live carefree. It’s less than half of my monthly income from my last full-time job. When I was gainfully employed I was struggling. Since then I have sold a lot of my furniture & clothes, babysit, & do other odd jobs to bring in money. Like most people I have a mortgage, utilities, cell phone (no home phone), car insurance, medical expenses, property taxes, home insurance, life insurance, bank loan, student loans, internet, credit cards, and not to mention food, house repairs, car maintenance (+ gas & tag renewal), toiletries & miscellaneous items. That’s a lot to manage with a steady pay check. I have reduced almost every luxury & expense as possible. I have no cable, no house phone, couldn’t pay insurance on appliances anymore (my central heating & air broke a year later), don’t go out regularly, stopped paying on credit cards, got deferment on student loans (currently back in school), clip coupons, buy off brand foods, don’t use car as much, got mortgage modified, & I’ve made so many other changes & sacrifices. I’m down to the bare essentials. I am a divorcée with no kids, but my disabled mom lives with me. Her disability compensation just started a few months ago & due to an error it’s only half of the amount she is supposed to get. All of congress/senate is about to go on vacation for over a month from August 1st to September 5th (Labor Day) which is known as the August Recess. And then when they get back will be focusing on their re-election campaigns. The 2010 midterm election will be held on Tuesday, November 2 with at least 36 of the 100 seats in the Senate being contested and all House seats coming up for election.

    If you’re a 99er, it’s not looking good.

I am what they call a 99 er. I am 57 years old. I have been sending resumes to all jobs. I use to send over 300 resumes, when the jobs were there at one time, but today they are not! I applied for a temporary job last week. They needed 20 Mail Room Clerks. They had over 1700 resumes for the job. I was not hired for the job. My husband and I do not receive any food stamps or welfare. We have depleted our savings, and 401 s, as everyone else in this country has done. We sell stuff on craiglist, so we can buy groceries and medicine. We have no health insurance, medicaid or medicare.People all over the United States are struggling, and losing their homes, and they are hungry!!! Food banks are swamped with people. It is catastrophic! I was raised by depression era parents that taught me to make due with what you have! The stories that everyone reads or sees are heart-wrenching! When someone comments that we are not seeking employment, it makes me sick! They need to walk a mile in our shoes! They have no idea what everyone is going through in America. It is disgusting that our Government cares about poverty in almost every other country, except the United States! I thank the Lord that we still have a roof over our heads! We struggle to pay our mortgage first, I figure if we do not pay it, we won t have to worry about the rest of the bills. We wouldn’t have a home! The government in our country needs to live like one of us have to live to understand what we have and how we have to survive in our lives and jobless economy! Wake up America! We are the citizens~

  23. Wayne says:

I too am a fellow 99er. I don’t know where My next check is coming from. I don’t know how I’m going to keep providing for my family. Unfortunately, this is our own fault. We sat back and let politics stand in the way of common sense for years and years. Now it has come back to bite us in the end. Get rid of all the political mumbo jumbo and keep it real.

  24. Travisnc says:

I’m a 99er also…The problem is that an economy is like an airplane in flight. If the airplane flies too slow, it stalls and falls to the ground and everyone inside dies. If it goes too fast, the wings tear off and it falls to the ground and everyone inside dies. If our government should suddenly stop increasing the deficit (slow down the airplane), it would have to more than double our taxes to pay its current obligations. If this happened, the economy would implode. So, what happens when several million unemployed people and tens of millions who receive some form of government assistance each month suddenly receive no money? How safe will America be? How angry will people become? Can you imagine long lines of people standing outside Walmart begging for food? Can you imagine being robbed at gun point for groceries as you exit a food store? Can you imagine gangs holding “gated communities” hostage within their gates until their financial demands are met? Can you image hospitals and doctors offices closed because there is no insurance and people cannot pay actual costs? When the government tells a huge number of people they will no longer receive government assistance, what choices will they have for survival? Consider Greece again (even though there has been a temporary respite for Greece by the European Union, the drama is not over – keep an eye on it).

john alex, Your brain must not have the ability to understand what the economy is like right now. Employers are not hiring! 28. TLS says:

To everyone that is on unemployment and is responding to these blogs. Congress is getting ready to go on a month vacation. The GOP filibustered the small business bill that is loans not spending and in the bill if you don’t use the money for new jobs you lose the loan. They are going on vacation with 4 million people have used up 99 weeks of benefits and have no means of survival. The suicide rate has gone up do to people not having ways to pay their bills or feed their families. So what can we do? Go to Senate.gov and look up any Senator that has help cause this situation and has gone on an unnecessary vacation. Flood their home offices with calls and faxes. They would scream if Obama took a month off.

To anyone that believes the unemployed are sitting on our butts, let me tell you what is going on. Two major things:

    1) When companies were forced to lay off workers their goals didn’t change they were still in business to make a profit and if they had share holders they still had their yearly projection that was promised to the share holders. So what they did is just made the people they kept work harder and longer. Maybe had some people that were in management get back to physical work instead of just supervising. So if they hit their goals with less workers there is no incentive to rehire until their goals are too high their current work staff can’t reach it. So less labor and hitting quarterly goals creates larger profits.
    2) I been in management most of my life and wither you are a manager of a small business or a big enough business that you have a Human Resource manager. Hiring can be very stressful. They are looking for a person that will be right for the company and stay and help the company succeed for a long time. So when they are looking at applications and interviewing people they have those criteria’s in mind plus they have a pay scale in mind. So they are not going to hire someone that was making $90,000.00 for a $45,000.00 a year job . Why? It is not just because they might be over qualified; it is will this person stay with us for the long term? or until a better paying job comes up. Yes, during the interview most applicants will say they are looking for anything right now and will be a loyal employee. The interviewer knows that as soon as that person gets called back to their old job or is offered a higher paying job they will leave 99.9% of the time. So part of there job of hiring is to find a person for the job that will stay and keep turn over down. That means be very careful who you hire because every person you hire cost a company around $3,000.00 to $5,000.00 in training. ½ of that amount on the new hire and the other half for the person spending time training the new hire, plus the hours of paperwork done when there is a new hire. So every time you lose that hired person the company takes a loss. By the way high turnover is #1 on the list of losing your job as a manager or HR manager.

This doesn’t stop us from looking but just shows the reasons why we are not getting call backs from resumes or applications. It is just the facts, a SUBWAY owner isn’t going to hire a person that was making $50,000.00 a year and train them when they can hire a person that has worked in that field or prior work history pay scale is close to what he is offering. He just can’t waste time with turnover.

Lets not forget the 99ers – Also don’t forget who caused the delay in the extensions vote them out!

I am a single mother that has not worked for over a year. I am not lazy. I have looked and have filled out over 400 applications, with nothing to show, just e-mails stating that I am over qualified (we all know what that means ) or thanks but no thanks. There are no jobs in Nevada. I have even applied at fast food places when I am an office worker and an x- office manager.

What a sad, sad day in America’s history, when the American people realize that their own government could care less about them and their families.

I say Stop supplying other countries, Stop giving tax cuts for big business and rich families that don’t need it. Stop bailing out large corporations and banks, Wall street that put us in this mess in the first place. Then there would be enough money to help what use to be the back bone of America

I have little food left so I feed my daughter and eat her left overs, if she doesn’t leave any, I drink sugar water that sustains me. Is this the way an American that has worked all her life be reduced to?

These should be the new American Anthem:

    O beautiful for spacious skies,
    For amber waves of grain,
    For purple mountain majesties
    Above the fruited plain!

    America! America!
My heart now cries for thee,
For Government and Corporate men, have brought you to your knees.

    America, what have they done,
    now progress just a dream,
No jobs in sight and family life no longer has a mean.
To rise above all that’s been done,
    from Governmental greed.

America, things have to change, our for fathers agreed.
we must unit for righteous rights, don’t let false leaders lead.
    America, America.
Gods eyes are set on thee,
To prosper now we must be bound,
    From sea to shinning sea.

My God bless those S.O.B’s the way they should be blessed. Amen.

  34. Cindy says:

The crime has started over this unemployment BS. I read the other day that this man broke into a womans home, although he was very sorry, he demanded her money and jewels. He was going to call her to tell her what pawn shop he was going to bring her grandmothers jewels. He kept telling her how sorry he was that he had to do this but he noted to her that he had kids to feed. He goes on to tell her that his kids are hungry and because thier are no jobs he has to do what he has to do. He never called her to tell her what pawn shop he will be at so she can buy her grandmothers keepsakes back. Imagine a man breaks into your house and demands money and jewels. What he should of done is break into a home of a politician and demand he give him money to feed his kids. That is what they all need. A reality check in thier face. It is going to get much worse and our government doesnt care because they think they are safe from violence. THEY HAVE ALL COMMITED THE MOST OUTRAGIOUSE CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY AND THEY GET AWAY WITH IT. THEY SHOULD ALL BE ARRESTED AND THROWN IN JAIL. iT MUST BE NICE TO BE ABOVE THE LAW. I THINK IF CRIMES ARE GOING TO BE COMMITED BECAUSE OF THIS CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR, IT SHOULD BE DIRECTED TOWARDS THE SAME PEOPLE WHO PUT US IN THIS MESS. I also believe that the government should be held accountable for all the homes we lost, our 401ks, iras, bank accounts and whatever anybody lost because of the governments lack of ability to run this country. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE TO STOP THIS MADNESS? After this weekend we will see what happens. The government will be returning to collect more WELFARE from us. They need another vaca. But it wont be as nice because so many of us are out of benes and less taxes being paid into thier WELFARE FUNDS. They will be faced to vacation in thier back yards and that wont be sufficient enough for them. To those who are thinking criminally, please dont take it out on the innocent people. Take it out on the very ones who have done this to us. PLEASE, a single woman does not deserve this and you dont know that the person you are stealing from may as well be a 99er. Hold the people who did this to us responsible, not the innocent.
