The main event of UFC Fight Night 22 features middleweight fighters Nate Marquardt and Rousimar Palhares meeting in the octagon on Wednesday at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. Marquardt is a former King of Pancrase and has been among the top middleweights in the UFC. Palhares is a dangerous jiu-jitsu submission expert seeking to climb the middleweight ladder.
Marquardt may be remembered as the fighter expected to beat Chael Sonnen at UFC 109 in February to set up a title match against Anderson Silva. Despite a nasty cut on the forehead, Sonnen went on to dominate Marquardt using his solid wrestling background and win by unanimous decision. At UFC 117, Sonnen backed up his trash talking by dominating Silva before losing by submission.
This leaves Marquardt on an uphill climb back to the top of the middleweight division. A win over Palhares followed by perhaps another win or two could get him back in contention for a title shot. He is slightly favored to prevail over the one-dimensional fighter Palhares but Marquardt needs to keep the fight away from the ground.
Marquardt has shown in the past that he not only possesses submission skills but he also has knockout power in both hands and feet.
