The weigh in results are in. On Saturday night at the TD Garden in Boston MA, mixed martial arts fight fans are in for another treat with UFC 118. Ultimate Fighting Championship is bringing mixed martial arts to a place that used to be a good base for boxing fans.
There have been less interesting boxing events in the last few years paving the way for MMA to rise in popularity. The upcoming UFC 118 is not lacking in star power and it also features some interesting matchups.
In the main event, UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar defends his crown against former champion BJ Penn in a rematch that would cement the status of the eventual winner. Penn is favored to reclaim his lighweight title to validate himself as the greatest lightweight champion. Edgar may not be a pushover with improvements seen in him in each fight.
The co-main event has boxing champion James Toney facing legendary UFC fighter Randy Couture in a heavyweight match. This may turn out to be a boxing vs. MMA match. Couture is the odds on favorite but Toney has a “puncher’s chance” to score an upset knockout victory.
Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard dispute top contender spot for the lightweight crown. The winner of the Florian-Maynard match will set him up with a championship match with the winner of the Edgar-Penn rematch.
