Mixed martial arts fans all over the world are about to witness another major UFC event. On Saturday night, UFC 117 is unfolding featuring the MMA pound for pound king Anderson Silva defending his middleweight championship against Chael Sonnen. The event is to be held at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California.
All fighters except for one made weight during the weigh in on Friday at the Oracle Arena. Welterweight Thiago Alves, who is set to meet Jon Fitch in a rematch that would put the winner into title contention, weighed in at 171.5 pounds. He came in at half a pound over the limit of 171 pounds. The ideal weight for the welterweight division is set at 170 pounds.
This is not the first time that Alves missed the weight limit. He failed at weigh in before for a welterweight matchwith Matt Hughes at UFC 85, unable to cut weight on cardio due to an ankle injury. This time he had trouble cutting weight after more than a year of Octagon inactivity. In case of an Alves win over Fitch, Alves still gets a shot at the winner of the Georges St. Pierre-Josh Koscheck fight in December. However, Alves will be penalized with 20% off his purse.
The rest of the field at the weigh in are all set to put up another show at UFC 117. Junior Dos Santos, Roy “Big Country” Nelson, Matt Hughes, Ricardo Almeida, Rafael Dos Anjos and Clay “The Carpenter” Guida are ready to strut their wares in the biggest fight stage known to many as the Octagon. This is probably one good reason why mixed martial arts has overtaken boxing in terms of popularity. With mixed martial arts, we get to see the best fight the best.
