Microblogging breakthrough Twitter recently acquired SMS technology start up Cloudhopper for an undisclosed sum. Kevin Thau, Twitter’s mobile business developer explained that the micro-blogging service was originally inspired by SMS, with Twitter’s 140 character limit designed to allow any tweet to be read on any mobile device. The acquisition of Cloudhopper, which is a messaging infrastructure company aims to connect Twitter directly to mobile carrier networks in countries around the world and finally launch Promoted Tweets, a new advertising medium for micro-blogging. Twitter saw much potential in the expansion from its close to a billion record of SMS tweets per month in various countries like Australia, Indonesia, US, UK and more.
Twitter has also been occupied during the month with the acquisition of Atebits, the manufacturer of the popular Tweetie iPhone application, and the launch of a dedicated BlackBerry app built by Research in Motion.
