Tier 5 Unemployment Extension Bill Petition Rises: 99ers Want Unemployment Benefits – The clamor for the passage of a Tier 5 Unemployment Extension Bill in the Congress continues. The recent HR 4213 Unemployment Extension Bill does not involve unemployment benefits for those 99ers or those that have received 99 weeks of their unemployment benefits. What will happen to these unemployed individuals now?
Without a Tier 5, these unemployed Americans will have to rely on federal TANF or the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program which offers just over $500 each month. However, before you can avail this benefit, you must first prove that you’re capable of paying your rent. Apart from it, the only benefit available to those 99ers are food stamps.
Aside from the usual argument of the Republicans that the costs associated with the passage of a Tier 5 Unemployment Extension Bill will just add to the current huge deficit of the government, it is also being said that it creates a disincentive for a job seeking behavior. That means, if an unemployed individual is expecting to get unemployment benefits, then they will be less likely to get motivated to find a job. While some maybe in this kind of attitude, the majority are actually looking for jobs but there are just no work available in the market. In effect, they are continuously losing their homes, their resources, their food, and their dignity.
Several groups and organizations have set up various petition sites for 99ers. Change.org has this “The 99ers need a Tier 5 added to Unemployment Benefits“; The Petition Site has this “We need a Tier 5 Federal Unemployment Extension“; and Saver 99ers has this “Petittion to Save the 99ers“
Our politicians, especially the Republicans, need not to wait for crime rates to increase before they can address this issue immediately. Participate in any of these petitions for 99ers and let your voices be heard. Keep sending letters, emails, and phone calls to your senators. You can also contact the White House directly here and send your concerns to President Obama. America needs to take care of America.

Senator Stabenow from Michigan just today (August 4, 2010) introduced a bill in the senate that would give another 20 weeks to tier 5 employees who are still out of work. Write your senators and convince them to support that bill. She calls it the Americans Want to Work Act.

Have being out of work for 2 years i’m finaly going back to work tomarrow, i had to go back to school but at least i got the job. I still feel the pain of the uunemployed i’v been there and all my prayers go out to those that need tier V the governemnt doesn’t seem to understand there are millions of pepole out of work no thousands, and need help now!!

I lost my job i train my replacement and went to school and just graduate in July of this yr. and cant find any one to hired me telling me i need at least 1 to 2 yr experience if no will give me a job how will i have experience i have been working since i was 17 always had a job now i was told i cant get mt benefit because i was fired for being late they said i have find a job before they can pay me out my benefit i need to talk to some one behind on my rent.
I am so tired of hearing that if the 99ers get unemployment benefits they will be less likely to look for a job. THERE ARE NOT EVEN ENOUGH OF AVAILABLE JOBS TO GO AROUND!!!! So how do they expect people to find work???? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out!!! People can job hunt 8 hours a day and apply and apply and apply, but that doesn’t even mean they will get an interview. If someone is lucky enough to get an interview that doesn’t mean they will get the job, even after having a great interview!!! I have been on several interviews that I was told I was a great fit for the position, but that didn’t mean I got the job. The politicians better open their eyes and take note that this country is “going to hell in a hand basket”. They need to stop sending jobs over seas. There isn’t much made in this country any more, everything is done over seas. Well did these morons ever think that if there was a nother World War that we might not have access to what we need because we have to rely on it being exported from another country. Do these morons stop to think that half of are personal information is not being handled by people over seas. Just leave the country wide open for disaster, why don’t you. You want to save America? When will Congress learn that being on unemployment is nothing more than putting food on the table while you’re out there among evryone else looking for a job. Maybe they’ll understand in November! I was just in Tennessee for my birthday. My fiance took me there. I will never forget the bald cashier at the Kroger store stating President Obama needs to go, and will only be a one term president if Tennessee has anything to do with it. As their Rebel flags hung everywhere! The president was mentioned because I was carded for Alchohol for my birthday party, and he noticed my birthday was the same day as our presidents! I just listened to his remark and then stated, “If I was uneducated and had to work at Krogers, at your age I would want to go to school, and I would forget the racial slurs and try to make my life easier”.But I would also remember the president has given you the recources to get an education, and maybe you are too lazy to take advantage of his grant money we have all been offered, do to your racism, which makes me very sad and makes you look and sound sickening! Then I stated….” Some people just dont like to change, and enjoy racism”. I told him I was sorry he was so angry about the fact a black man was now our president, and thats as far as he could see. So now the Pentagon is going to cut THOUSANDS of jobs of which will include one-third of its budget and also effect the contractors and the entire military base in Norfolk, VA! And I thought that having a government job meant having security. This thing has got to be fixed.
I cant believe the politics, that are shaping unemployed american lives, I have been unemployed for two years, with one job that lasted for 3 mths, and ended right around xmas, what a year, I have moved from one state to another looking for work, and the same problem in the new area, looking to start school for my nursing degree, but looking at the posts, a job with such demand, has people still not able to find work, when will this end, it is crazy, I am sure most people want to work, you can barely make ends meet with unemployment, but it is a necessity right now, with no income, and facing being on the streets, because you cant pay your bills. Please politicians help us, we are in desperate need and we want to work believe me.
Im also a “99er”. My benefits have just expired, and they werent even good enough to pay for all my expenses, BUT i was getting by. I am married and have 2 kids (6yo.3yo) and a baby on the way. I DONT WANT UI—-I WANT A JOB!
But now i dont have neither. My mortgage is going to be 30 days late this month, our car is 60 days past due, and i fear we are going to be homeless—-
I was a Mortgage Broker, and made a nice living, i worked hard for 10 years an NEVER put one of my clients in a mortgage that wasnt fixed and a intrest rate higher than 6%. There were times i did mortgages for clients for free!

I know the feeling it is 2 years for me and still no offers other than part time min. wage jobs with about 15 hours a week. Me and my spouse have job issue’s in this economy. Like you I don’t want hand outs I want a real job and the President is on vacation and not moving fast enough for me!….Just take it one day at a time it’s all we can do!..You are not alone.
Okay, if you are so destitute and barley making it…why on earth do you have another baby on the way..perhaps because you have become accustomed to and expect the taxpyers to pay to prvide you ongoing money for food, cloting etc. Personal responsibility…if you have enough time and money to bring another child into this world, you should have a plan on how to care and provide for them.
Everyone needs to take a deep breath, and have some faith in our Democratic party. I know its hard, I am a 99er also, but they really do seem to be trying to get good things done. I do at this point think it is time for an executive order, but I had wriiten a few weeks ago, that I see the strategy. If the democratic party keeps spending prior to the elections, the republicans surely will win, because people are too stupid to realize that we are all facing being homeless by no fault of our own. I do think it is time for an executive order and let the bush tax cuts he gave the rich pay for the extension, by taking those tax breaks away. I think the president should order our unemployment extended, and he needs to get on tv to address the nation and tell the truth about how the republican party does not want to help us, they just want to keep their tax breaks. Well……Those tax breaks will pay the bill to extend our unemployment! Every USA citizen needs to realize this. I watched the movie that Micheal Moore did about the abuses of our government. We need to do what he did with all 5 million unemployed at the same time and wrap a CRIME SCENE tape all around wall street. Keep wrapping it until you cant see the building anymore. I’m so disgusted with people saying the unemployed are lazy bums who don’t want to work. Are you kidding me?? Do you really think 14 million+ Americans decided to get laid off? This isn’t just high unemployment in one or two states – this is across the entire U.S. You know why? Because the American workforce has been replaced with cheap foreign labor. Even the U.S. Postal Service is running job ads recruiting Green Card holders. Let that sink in for just a moment. A federal government agency that is well aware 10% of American workers are currently unemployed and desperately seeking jobs is actively recruiting non-American workers. In my state of Maryland, Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) allows Eastern Shore companies to go down to Mexico every year and bring in non-American labor to do the jobs that Marylanders should and would be doing. This is in addition to the illegals already here! Jack Brooks, owner of J.M. Clayton Seafood in Cambridge, Md. said in an article in the Washington Post, and I quote: “HIRING U.S. WORKERS IS NOT AN OPTION.” He says if he has to pay U.S. workers he can’t compete with the Asian market. Senator Mikulski heartily supports this business practice, even though it’s putting her own constituents OUT OF WORK. And this isn’t just happening in Maryland. This has become the business mantra across America. The unemployed are like some dead thing smashed on the side of the road that no one wants to look at, and their elected state representatives ignore them thinking maybe they’ll just go away. The unemployed are not some statistical percentage. They are flesh and blood Americans who have been forced out of jobs and now find themselves unable to find work leaving them unable to pay their rent or feed their children. When the naysayers lose their jobs and unemployment hits 15%, maybe then the country will actually take positive steps to address the problem.
Actually, the unemployment rate is higher than what we are being told. They do not count the 99ers or people that are under employed, which makes sense to do, if you are trying to down play the seriousness of the issue. If you took into account all the people currently on unemployment, people that have dropped off of due to exhausting benefits (and not everyone will get 99 weeks due to that “up to” statement which at a time like this is utter BS) and the underemployed, as in they are not earning a living wage, the rate is actually closer to 20%, which is just staggering.
The solution that I see as really viable is that companies that are sending jobs over seas need to recall them, or close down here in the US, period. No hiring anyone that is not a US citizen or legal to work in the country, period. No tax breaks at this time when money is needed all over the country. Unemployment benefits need to be extended until the the national rate is 7%, and includes all people not earning a living wage, period. No more money being sent to other countries at this time, we can’t afford it, it has to stay here so that we can take care of our own, period.
Sound selfish? Maybe so, but when it comes to us or them to survive and get through the next month or day or year, I choose us, not them. It’s time big business and wallstreet (yes in lower case) learn that they are not in charge here, we are and we will say how things go here or they can leave, period.
I have been umemployed for a year and half. In Oklahoma, we are only able to get 73 weeks vs. the 99 that others have gotten. ALTHOUGH, finding a job in Oklahoma is just as hard as anywhere else.
My degree is in Computer Science, and anyone would think “Ah! YOU can find a job!!!”, but it is not that simple…I am a web developer and again, a person could think “Ah! YOU can find a job!!” again, it is not that simple! I am up against the 18-24 year olds that can work 80 hours a week, and only charge for 40 hours… I am OVER qualified for MOST jobs…Geesh! I can’t even get a job at the local bookstore because I am overqualified!!!
A few more weeks of unemployment will mean the difference between living in a house and living in the street come voting time! I have kids, and they are getting every last dollar I can manage just to get ready for school!!!! Food is coming from local food banks, and food stamps only help so much…. I have sold every thing of value I absolutely can live with out…

I applaud Debbie Stabenow for introducing the Tier 5 bill in the Senate, but NOT the way it was introduced. Instead of addressing an EMERGENCY issue, Stabenow left it open-ended and un-funded to play politics with peoples lives and futures, and to trigger eventual filibusters from the other side, so Stabenow can point fingers, and try to buy votes in the upcoming mid-term elections . One of the backers is Sen. Harry Reid, who started the whole mess with extending unemployment benefits by stripping out everything including the funding. Reid won’t be re-
elected in Nov. 2010, and Stabenow will follow suit in Nov. 2012, and Sen. Carl Levin in Nov. 2014, unless they resign before that. I’m from Michigan and know what hardships these two senators from a hardest-hit state of Michigan have caused, by not working quickly to expedite aide to the unemployed They could have urged Obama to do an executive order some time ago, and all those extension fights over expiration dates would NOT have happened, and there would have been room to add a Tier 5 and even a Tier 6, like what happened with the adding of Tier 3 and

24/7 posted an article from a CEO perspective about why businesses are not hiring. They feel that it is because the senate keeps obstructing unemployment extensions. They say that it is inconsistent and too late and that is the cause for less spending across the board. They say that a Tier V is inevitable. Without it sales will plummet and more job loss will be a result.
The problem is, even if they pass it people will be reluctant to spend except for extreme necessity because they know how long it takes to pass an extension, in the first place. So there stall tactics are making more than the unemployed and 99ers suffer. It’s apparent that the entire nation will ultimately suffer as jobless numbers spike and sales plummet, as well as mortages not being paid, lights, phone bills, etc…….

I’m a 99er and those who are against Tier 5 can say what they want. They’re trying to get their 15 minutes of fame off of the 99ers situation. They won’t be the heros, we will be because we fought hard to protect other Americans like us and we were in it together and stood up for each other. When it came down to it, we fought for the common interest. That’s a true American spirit, not those ignorant people who rather see babies go hungry and cold, then let us get the tools we need to regain what we lost due to the Government’s foolishness.

Under different circumstances I would agree with the issue of opposing a Tier V for the 99′ers.
I’m not mad with the Republican’s for opposing Tier V; I don’t blame them one bit! I am in complete agreement with the concept of self-sufficiency; that’s the way I got to where I was when I lost my job. I blame the corrupt financial institutions that caused, not only the mortgage crisis, but all the financial dominoes that fell as a result.
Last week, when I voted in Florida’s early election, I voted straight republican (except Charlie Crist or any other republican down with the current administration), and I am proud to say, “I did not vote for the big zero, 0-bama.
The problem is the glut of unemployed people competing for the same few jobs (the law of supply and demand). And, with the economy still tanked, what’s the rational behind believing 99′ers just aren’t looking for jobs?
The 99′ers lost their jobs in the first place because Wall Street tanked the economy! In effect, 99′ers are looking for the same jobs they lost! And, guess what? Their not out there! Plus, allot of the 99er’s are over 40, and most likely, were booted first because of that fact alone.
And consider this: All things being equal in terms of the qualifications of the applicants, why would an employer hire someone, oh…., say 30, or 40 years old, or, worse yet, 50 years old, when they can hire someone 20 years old?
I am a 52-year-old white female. I have been praised all my life for my incredible work ethic (recommendations letters to prove it). I put out 10 or more resumes a week both in and out of my field including an application at a Hooter’s Restaurant; yes, I look that good!
So, I’m not fat, I’m not ugly, and I am certainly not lazy; I’m just a 52 year old female competing with a glut of people who are not only unemployed also, but much younger too.
While I am not up side down in my mortgage, I just became delinquent (for the first time ever in my 52 years) when I missed my August payment, and guess what? September is just around the corner!
I have cut my living expenses to the BONE! I drive a 1997 Chrysler that has an electrical short so I have to have a supply of fuses to get it started. Yes, I have a pet, and I will die before I send her to the shelter (she eats before I do; all six pounds of her).
It just seems so patently unfair to leave the 99′ers hung out to dry especially when the Wall Street fat cats, who caused this whole problem, got bailed out.
Admittedly, for the sake of the economy, opposing Tier V is right thing to do, but I ask: Is there no solution to this dilemma than to make 99′ers sacrificial lambs? Sacrificial lambs are great — until you are one!

Deana, I really enjoyed your post and I agree with you. I am also a female woman, 60 years old with a very small pet. If I were eating my last meal, I would share it with her, all 12 pounds of her! In the way of material items, I possess very little. I have a small home that is now in arrears since I have lost my job and my savings are almost depleted. My car payment is also behind but the company is at least working with me to help me make smaller payments until I find employment which seems so unlikely. Actually, the job I now have is by far the Hardest One I’ve ever worked. There are long hours involved, Much Frustration, repetition, and always disappointment at the end of the day. IT IS THE JOB OF TRYING TO FIND EMPLOYMENT!! Even if for the sake of the economy, Tier V would be unwise, it is also unwise to let people go hungry and lose what they have worked for all their lives. Obama and the entire government know our plight, but don’t care. What a sad state we are in. This country has changed right before our eyes when “no count” Obama was elected. Spiraling down, down, and further down! At least I had the good sense not to vote for him. There was just something about him my inner “pyche” didn’t trust, but even then, I could’t imagine just HOW BAD IT COULD HAVE BEEN! Let’s all pray for one another. GOD knows, and GOD cares. The holidays are coming up–and media reports will lie as usual about the increased of sales, indicating that the economy is on an upward swing.
We need to get our point across, effectively. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING BUT THE ESSENTIALS! Limit what you buy, ESPECIALLY for Christmas. For some of us, this will not be a problem because the money is sparse anyway; but for those who can, LIMIT what you buy. This is the one thing that will help them understand that the middle class (us) does matter (or what was once the middle class). We play an integral role in keeping the economy strong because we are the ones who spend constantly when we are gainfully employed. When this TIER FIVE (T5) is passed, we need a TIER SIX also, because T5 will run out before we all get back to decent jobs–AND, before all you “naysayers” and “antagonist” on this blog put in your asinine 2 cents that is not even worth a wooden nickel–YES we want good and even great jobs with BENEFITS created in order to sufficiently support our families and ourselves; the same thing that every American wants. So cut-it-out with the B–s because I for one of many know that you are full of it! The corporate CEO’s stated that they are not hiring because they do not think Americans will open there pockets to buy for some time to come? Those idiots!! They are creating this vicious circle. How can we support this economy without jobs?!! So okay, now we are at an impasse and one thing affects the other. BOYCOTT!! Because the ball is in their court and they refuse to do the right thing.
This letter is for the working who oppose 99ers getting more benefits. Let’s look at the affect of being unemployed to the working people.
I shall use myself as an example in January 2008 I lost my job because I had missed too much time looking after my dying wife of 22 years and my 3 young daughters. The company I worked for had made every effort to save my job, but I had to miss 2 months work that year alone and since I was at a $75k plus salary they had to let me go.
My wife died 2 months later fortunately for us I get Social Security for my children that pays my mortgage and nothing else. OK so how does this affect the working group.
Many people like myself have worked their entire life to move up, get an education, raise a family, etc. When suddenly your income is shut off and there are no jobs guess what happens.
You lose your house- The empty house down the street from you went into foreclosure, now it is for sale at a price below your nieghborhood standard, way below guess what? now almost anyone can move into your nieghborhood, crack dealers, ethnic diversity (including white trash) etc. There goes your nieghborhood and your life investment.
A family with no income still has to have a car, especially to drive thier kids to school. Car insurance gets cut down first and then dropped because insurance does not feed your family. If these newly uninsured people have an accident the people with insurance have to pay the additional premiums.
Crime goes way up even without crime using the simple insurance example without insurance you lose your license then you may get a ticket, now you can’t pay it so you go to jail, then DCF puts your children in foster care. It does not end it just gets worse and worse. Who pays the jail bill, the DCF bill – YOU DO
If you people opposing Tier Five think this is a “free ride” for us 99ers then why not work 6 months then give one of us your job for 6 months then alternate until the economy picks up.
Typically hiring departments H/R are young post college grad’s who believe if you are over 50 then you are too old to work, so you have a 85% chance of being overlooked. Stupid kids we can outwork most of thier lazy generation.
Pass Tier Five. People were less opposed to the government bailing out crooks like Enron.

re: HR depts, yes… I was to train a new employee, under age 30, what happened? She never showed up for work..decided she didn’t want to work that hard.
I think every new hire should shadow an employee who is over 50 years of age and try to duplicate their work ethic.

Typically the ones complaining don’t want to work overtime, advance themselves, or stick their neck out, they just want to get by. I rarely ever worked less than 50 hours a week usually 60-70hours a week 50 weeks a year, even at 16 I worked 28 hours after school and full time plus during the summer. Let’s not forget first of all to qualify for unemployment you had to have been working and have lost your job for reason’s not your fault (except in my case my family came first).
If you never had any work ethics the employee would have rejected your claim. At 52 years old I would like to work 60 hours a week again, but with my family situation will settle for anything. I have even litterally steam cleaned sewage pipes and done many of the jobs that you see on TV with Mike Rowe while going to college. I am not scared of getting dirty or delegating in an office just give me a job. Meanwhile pass Tier Five.
I ‘ve had many different jobs through out the years seems like when I found the right place they would close or move out of the country. But I ‘ve always paid Federal,State,City taxes,Property taxes every year,which has amounted to a great deal of money. And all I’m worth is 99 weeks for 30 plus years of hard work. This is the first year I could’nt pay my property taxes on time which goes up every year, I guess it’s for pay increases and bonuses to state and federal officals. I’m selling things in my house that I worked so hard to get anything of value is being sold just to keep up ,when thats gone it will be a matter time before another American will be flushed down the drain.
The latest report is that 500,000 more unemployment claims were filed last week BELIEVE ME thats just the start with thousands reaching the 99 week limit. Taking that money from them and those already beyond that point will cause more and more company cut backs due to massive drop in store sales. Not to mention the Fourclosures, Car repo’s. I hope things change and everybody makes it through, but with the Rep and Dem’s never ending conflicts it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe will see each other at one of the tent cities.

The reports about 99ers maxing out is millions, once your unemployment runs out according to the government you are no longer unemployed. I personally signed up for unemployment after my benefits ran out just to stay “unemployed” even though my claim is $0 it keeps me on the books. I do not know if this is really a good move or not, but I will not be classified as a working statistic. (this may cause problems I do not know) I sold everything I had also, cashed in any college funds for my kids and sold my second car I now drive a 1995 jeep with minimal insurance. There are several local bridges near me that are supposed to be “good family shelters” see you there. By the way the companies went to China, India, Pakistan, Taiwan and Japan plus Turkey, and other 3rd world countries and it started BEFORE 911 (another gov scam)

yaaaaaaaaaa…I am on the street now. Writing this from the library computer. I got evicted from my apt on wednesday. 60 more resumes and not a phone call. My cell will get shut off by the 12th of this month. $43.77 in my pocket. Temp last nite fell to 50 degrees. I slept in my car. Never missed a days work in my life. At 47 they won’t hire me at Mcdonalds or Subway. I wonder why ? Is it because I haven’t worked in over 2 years ? Ran a credit check only to find out I lost my house to foreclosure last year. I hope they pass a tier 5. If not, I will either not vote of try voting Republican. If the Democrats aren’t going to help us we might has well give it a try. At the least it will hasten the coming hardships for the majority. Maybe then something will be done. I have been taking odd jobs that last a day or two but all of the advertised jobs I have applied for have a ton of applicants and a man in his mid 50s is not near the top of the hiring lists apparently. I will vote for the Democrats if they vote to help me. I won’t vote for a party that ignores my problems. I would much rather work than collect unemployment. How about paid training programs for new careers? Where do I apply for these new jobs that are being created to help the jobless?? It seems like that is just talk. I went to school full time for 9 months to be certified for water treatment, refinery, food processing, etc. When I graduated I found 1500 applicants for each position open. I passed all of their tests (I was part of 10% that passed) and still had to compete with 150 others for the one position. So far no luck. They have hired people in their 20s each time.
If they pass an extention for tier five then all the 99ers who are now “employed” (because if you have no benefits left you are no longer an unemployed person) then this will actually show how many of us are without income. My extentions ran out in March 2010 and I still cannot find work. How does that fit into their scheme that extentions make people lazy? I look every day for work I have (2) 11 year old kids to care for. Stop the bullshit and help us.
