The World Celebrates Earth Day April 22, 2010: Highlights and History

As we celebrate numerous events every year, Earth Day could be the most important among all of them. We should be celebrating it not only during April 22 but everyday. We should be making it as our highest priority simply because if we don’t, we all die.

The event was designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded the event last April 22, 1970 as an environmental teach-in. Earth Day Network asserts that Earth Day is now observed on April 22 on virtually every country on Earth. Earth Day 2007 was one of the largest Earth Days to date, with an estimated billion people participating in the activities in thousands of places like Kiev, Ukraine; Caracas, Venezuela; Tuvalu; Manila, Philippines; Togo; Madrid, Spain; London; and New York.

April 22 was chosen to be mark the important event because according to founder U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, it can maximize participation on college campuses for what he conceived as an “environmental teach-in”. More students were likely to be in class, and there would be less competition with other mid-week events.

Vice President Joe Biden has highlighted yesterday the Energy Efficiency Programs in Honor of Earth Day.

Saudi Arabia will mark the observance of Earth Day by holding a high-profile workshop focused on the protection of the national mangroves and coastal resources of the Arabian Gulf in the Eastern Province and the Red Sea in the Western Region.

Philippines will be celebrating 40th Earth Day at the same time commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Earth Day Philippines organization. This stresses the importance of celebrating and advocating for Mother Earth this year.

New Haven, Connecticut has a fun Family Camping event from April 22-April 23rd. While there you will gather around a campfire while roasting marshmallows and talk about the different things that each of you can do to help save the planet.

Miami, Florida: Miami Going Green: This event is packed with fun and even shows you how to run a Nintendo Wii on solar power.

Denver, Colorado has an event called Earth Day at Red Rocks: There will be music as well as a clean-up event.
New Orleans, Louisiana is also getting into the Earth Day spirit; they will be offering some jazz and Latin music to get the fun started. Environmental groups will also be on hand to spread the word about what needs to be done to save Mother Earth.
