Mosley vs Mora Fight Ends In Draw

The junior middleweight main event bout between former world boxing champions Shane Mosley and Sergio Mora was supposed to define the career of the eventual winner.  Neither fighter go what they wanted. After twelve rounds of boxing that was more of a clinching and wrestling match, the judges’ scorecards resulted to a split draw.

The main bout of an HBO TV pay-per-view event at the Staples Center on Saturday was rather anticlimactic, considering the supporting bouts were abbreviated by knockouts by Victor Ortiz, Canelo Alvarez and Daniel Ponce De Leon.

Mora was unable to exploit his height and reach advantage, throwing the more effective punches but lower in volume than needed to accumulate enough points for a convincing victory.

Mosley on the other hand was less effective on his punches but he connected with the more power. By the later rounds of the match, he was clearly exhausted.

Fans are definitely not pleased with the main event and its result. Mosley earned his paycheck and got some more from Mora’s purse who weighed in over the limit.

Antonio Margarito Cleared To Fight Manny Pacquiao In Texas

Antonio Margarito is set to fight Manny Pacquiao on Novemeber 13 at the Cowboys Stadium for a vacant junior middleweight title. This happens as Margarito has been issued his boxing license in Texas after being suspended for cheating by using an illegal substance for a fight with Shane Mosley last year.

Yes, this fight would guarantee Pacquiao another rich payday and a good shot at a record-breaking eighth title. Top Rank and Bob Arum are guaranteed to make decent earnings since any fight involving the Filipino boxing sensation can sell. What makes it sweeter for Arum and company is that both fighters are under Top Rank, which makes all earnings going in-house. Margarito on the other hand, stands to earn a seven-figure paycheck win or lose.

Now what message is the sport of boxing sending to fans? These are the fans that pay good money to see quality fights. Margarito cheated but he is now being rewarded with a huge payday. Top Rank is surely billed as villains as well. On top of all these, Pacquiao’s integrity is also put into question.

It is a pity that boxing has been overtaken by mixed martial arts, a relatively young sport, in terms of popularity. This is because we rarely see great boxing matches these days. Dana White and the UFC have been delivering great matches almost on a monthly basis. Other promotional outfits have followed suit with regular offerings of good MMA fights.

UFC 118: Frankie Edgar vs. B J Penn Analysis

The Ultimate Fighting Championship brings UFC to Boston for the first time with UFC 118 on Saturday at the TD Garden. The main event features a rematch between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn who is out to reclaim the crown he lost to Edgar at UFC 112.

Penn is favored to win back the title by coming into the fight more motivated than before. In their first meeting at UFC 112, Penn was favored to win against Edgar as he was thought to be unbeatable at lightweight. Frankie Edgar scored an upset unanimous decision win with better striking and at the same time using his quickness to stay away from Penn’s range.

While Penn is expected to come back stronger, there is no denying the fact that current champion Frankie Edgar has been improving every game. He has not received the due respect as a champion but his 12-1 record (7-1 at UFC) is quite impressive.

Penn is touted as the best UFC lightweight champion and Kenny Florian one of the lightweight greats who has not won the belt. Frankie Edgar deserves to be one of the lightweight greats too and he can validate this with another win over Penn on Saturday.

Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods Divorce Settlement Now Official

Nine months after slamming his Cadillac into a fire hydrant that led to a series of scandalous revelations on his infidelities, Tiger Woods has finalized a divorce settlement with Elin Nordegren. They were married for close to six years.

The former couple will continue to share parental responsibilities for the children, three-year-old Sam Alexis and 19-month-old Charlie Axel. Terms of the settlement were undisclosed but the estimated value that Elin is set to receive is pegged at nine-digits. In return, Elin has signed on a non-disclosure agreement so as not to further damage Woods’ reputation and marketability as an endorser. This seems not a bad deal since Elin gets to benefit from Woods’ endorsements as well.

Now that their divorce is official, PGA world number one Tiger Woods can focus on getting back to the game where he was feared most. Woods has not won any majors since the scandal on his extramarital affairs broke out. A Tiger Woods comeback by way of another major title may be good for the game and good for the sporting world as a whole.

Brett Favre Does Minnesota Vikings A “Favor”

Brett Favre’s announcement at a press conference on Wednesday that he is coming back to play another season with the Minnesota Vikings ended weeks of speculations about his retirement once again. In his half hour version of “the Decision”, Favre cited that he is in for one more season as a “favor” to his teammates. At this point he has nothing left to prove by logging more stats to enhance his NFL records and yes, he is set to earn $16.5 million.

It took three teammates to come over to his Mississippi home to convince him to come back to Minnesota. Jared Allen, Steve Hutchinson and Ryan Longwell went south to ask Favre to play one more season with the Vikings. The three Vikings went back to Minnesota with a fourth Viking in tow.

While Favre sees projects himself as just doing his team a favor, we all know that he is still the man between the Vikings and the playoffs. We have seen enough drama in Favre’s storied NFL career so what else is new?

Eli Manning Hurt In Monday Night Football Game

This Monday night football game was supposed to be a big one for the New York Giants and New York Jets. The regular season is still a few weeks away but this game between the Giants and the Jets was special as it was their first game at the New Meadowlands Stadium. Their new home is reportedly worth $1.6 billion and can seat up to 82,500 fans.

What was supposed to be a pre-season game became a concerning one for the Giants as they saw Eli Manning bleeding early in the game. At the 10:45 mark of the first half, Manning was smacked, lost his helmet and hit either safety Jim Leonhard or running back Brandon Jacobs. Manning was bleeding when he was pulled out of the game as he was replaced by Jim Sorgi.

Sorgi ran the offense so well againts the Giants’ second string defenders that Manning did not need to return to the game. The Giants won 31-16.

Manning suffered a cut three inches long that required twelve stitches. Initial medical findings indicate no serious injury other than the cut on his forehead.

Ana Ivanovic Withdraws As Kim Clijsters Advances To Cincinnati Open Finals

Ana Ivanovic was forced to withdraw from her Cincinnati Open semi-final match with Kim Clijsters. As a result, Kim Clijsters advances to the finals waiting for the winner of the other semi-final match between Maria Sharapova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Ivanovic could not continue with a left foot injury in the opening set. She twisted her left foot in the first set and it became apparent when she could not return a serve. Taping the injured foot did not help much as Ivanovic winced in pain.

This is not the first time that the former number one player is injured this season. A right shoulder injury early in the season caused a major setback as she has not reached any final match this year. She was ranked number 62 at the Cincinnati Open.

For Clijsters, this would be the second time that she is making a tennis comeback through the Cincinnati Open in two years. Her first one was after her two-year break from the game to so she could start off with her own family. This time Clisjters is coming off a break from Wimbledon.

Tiger Woods’ First Round: Three Shots Off PGA Championship

Tiger Woods fired a decent round on Thursday at the PGA Championship. His one-under par 71 placed him tied at 24th and three shots behind first day leaders Bubba Watson and Francesco Molinari. Many players have not completed all 18 holes of the first round due to fog. Friday forecast is just as foggy with expected rainshowers later in the day.

World number one Woods started off with three birdies in his first four holes. He faltered to finish at 71 in a first round that has been delayed by weather. Players who have not completed the first round are starting early on Friday, making the afternoon schedule uncertain given the weather forecast.

Phil Mickelson has not completed his first round on Thursday but he is tied at 24th spot with one-under par after eleven holes. He has a shot at taking over the number one spot after the PGA Championship.

This is the last major for the season. Although Woods has been at number one for five years now, he has not won a major this year. Woods and Mickelson started out as odds on favorites. Woods has never been the same after news about his infidelities came out and scandals hounded him. Mickelson on the other hand is suffering from arthritis which can hamper his performance.

Hunter Mahan Doing Better Than Tiger Woods These Days

Hunter Mahan made par despite hitting a planter box on Sunday at the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational. A free drop after a wayward tee shot on the par-5, 667-yard 16th hole salvaged a par for Mahan. This huge Mahan victory also secured him a spot in the Ryder Cup team U.S.A.

The event held at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio is Mahan’s second title this year out of his total of three. What makes this even more interesting is that Mahan secured the second spot in the U.S. team while Tiger Woods is in danger of not qualifying for the team.

Tiger Woods despite his highest 72-hole finish of 18-over par remains at world number one spot when Phil Mickelson failed to wrest the number one ranking with a similarly dismal performance in the tournament. A fourth place finish at the least would have given Mickelson the world top spot.

Woods is heading to Wisconsin to play in the PGA Championship hoping to make it to team U.S.A.

Isiah Thomas Returning To New York Knicks Fold

The New York Knicks organization is renewing ties with NBA legend Isiah Thomas. Thomas is set to return to the Knicks as consultant as announced on Friday. The 49-year old Thomas who was Knicks coach and president of basketball operations until he was fired more than two years ago, with Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni taking on his two roles.

Thomas was hired last year as head coach for the Florida International University basketball team. In his first season with the team, they ended the season with a 7-25 win-loss record. Thomas will keep his coaching post while working as Knicks consultant.

Thomas had a very successful playing career in the NBA but has been unsuccessful in his career as coach and executive in the sport that catapulted him to the NBA Hall of Fame.

The announcement is a mere formality as Thomas has continued scouting for the Knicks in an informal capacity. During free agency, he tried to lure LeBron James into signing with the Knicks. He also facilitated in the Amare Stoudemire acquisition during that period.

There will surely be mixed reactions from within the league and the public given his string of bad decisions and scandals during his tenure with the Knicks. The Knicks organization, however, finds value in Thomas’ contributions and hope that they can make a turnaround next season.
