Veteran point guard Derek Fisher had two shots at another NBA championship. For one, the Miami Heat is reportedly interested in signing him up to join its big three of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. On the other hand, he also has an opportunity to play alongside Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers to go for another three-peat next NBA season.
What made Fisher decide to stay with the Lakers is beyond the money he could possibly earn. After playing eleven seasons with Kobe and winning five NBA rings so far, it was hard for him to leave what he has called home for almost the entirety of his professional basketball career.
The core of last year’s champion team is still intact with Bryant, Lamar Odom, Pau Gasol, Ron Artest and Andrew Bynum. With Derek Fisher back in the Lakers lineup next season, they are just as formidable as last year and will surely pose a huge roadblock to contenders like the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics. One more ring, Kobe!
Former Los Angeles Lakers point guard Derek Fisher is now an NBA free agent. He has played a key role in five of the Lakers’ championships with Kobe Bryant, the last one just the previous season. He has provided experience and maturity especially when Kobe and the others Lakers stars Pau Gasol, , Lamar Odom, Ron Artest and Andrew Bynum need leadership. Fisher’s clutch plays in the 2010 NBA Finals against the Celtics helped the Lakers overcome a 3-2 deficit and eventually capture the title in seven games.
Now that he is a free agent, he is reportedly meeting with the Miami Heat. This happened a day after LeBron James announced his move to the Miami Heat, joining Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade. With the big three players taking a pay cut just to play together for a championship run, Miami Is in a position to offer Fisher more than what the Lakers could.
Adding veteran point guard Derek Fisher to the Heat lineup should indicate that Pat Riley is dead serious at making a title run next NBA season.
