A Slip in the Declaration of Independence Text

Everybody makes mistakes, and I mean everybody… even Thomas Jefferson.

The Library of Congress revealed for the first time last Friday that Thomas Jefferson “made a slip” when he was drafting the Declaration of Independence from England’s monarchial rule.

Preservation scientists working for the Library of Congress discovered that in the earlier drafts of the Declaration, Thomas Jefferson used the word, “subjects” to refer to the American people.

To Jefferson’s credit, he recovered quickly from the gaffe, crossed out the demeaning word and replaced it with the more politically correct term, “citizens”, which he used profusely in the Declaration’s final draft.

Just a little trivia to make this year’s Independence Day even more meaningful and memorable.

Happy 4th of July!
