Segway Owner Pronounced Dead After Falling Off A Cliff

The owner of the company that manufactures the Segway personal transporter was pronounced dead after falling off a cliff on Sunday.

James Heselden, 62, and a wealthy British businessman was pronounced “dead at the scene” after apparently falling off a cliff on one of the Segway vehicles. His body and a Segway personal transporter were found in the River Wharfe in northern England.

A Segway personal transporter is battery-powered two-wheeled vehicle stabilized by gyroscopes. It was invented by Dean Kamen, who founded the company in 1999.

According to Police, a witness reported seeing a man fall over a 30-foot (9-meter) drop into the river near Boston Spa, 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of London.

Police indicated that they do not believe anyone else was involved, saying “The incident is not believed to be suspicious.”

Heselden bought control of the New Hampshire-based Segway company in December, and made his fortune through his firm Hesco Bastion Ltd., which developed a system to replace sand bags to protect troops.
