Irishman Rory McIlroy fired a record-tying score of 63, 9-under par, in the opening round of the British Open. The 21-year old pro took advantage of the windless conditions at the Old Course of St. Andrews as he sizzled in the back nine of the opener, closing out the 18th hole with a birdie.
Through the eighth hole, McIlroy was just 1-under par. What set the momentum for the back nine was his amazing tee shot on the ninth that was followed by a one-putt eagle. McIlroy could have done even better if not for a couple of misses on what should have been easy birdie holes. He missed birdie on the par-5 fifth hole. He also missed a short birdie putt on the 17th hole.
At this point it is too early to tell how McIlroy will fare in the next three days. Tiger Woods is within striking distance at four shots behind McIlroy. In the next three days, we will find out who does not buckle under pressure.
