Manchester United fans can now celebrate as the golden boy has decided to stay behind. After a week long of grief and anguish from the fans, Manchester United star striker Wayne Rooney surprised everyone with his jaw-dropping announcement Friday. He has decided to stay and renew his contract with the club for another five years.

Two days before the shocking revelation, the 24 year old former Everton star resolved that he wanted to trade his red and white uniform to another color. He cited the club’s “lack of ambition” as the reason for his intended departure. But Friday’s announcement was totally unexpected. Rooney has changed his mind and decided to play for Manchester United for another good five year. He has signed a contract with the club that will bind him until June 2015.

Sources said that the change of heart came after a close door talks between manager Alex Ferguson, the club’s chief executive David Gill, and Rooney’s representatives on Thursday.

Fans were ecstatic about the news but some pundits are quick to judge his motive. Rooney explained his side in the club’s official website:

“In the last couple of days, I have talked to the manager and the owners and they have convinced me this is where I belong. I said on Wednesday the manager is a genius and it is his belief and support that have convinced me to stay.I’m signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history — which is the reason I joined the club in the first place.”

Ferguson was relieved when Rooney took his advice at heart. He was elated that he had convinced the liverpool native to renew ties with the club. “Sometimes, when you’re in a club, it can be hard to realize just how big it is and it takes something like the events of the last few days to make you understand. I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is,” Ferguson told CNN. ”I’m pleased he has accepted the challenge to guide the younger players and establish himself as one of United’s great players. It shows character and belief in what we stand for,” he added.

Wayne Mark Rooney was born on October 24, 1985 in Croxteth, Liverpool, England. He is a striker for both Premier League club Manchester United and the English national team. Rooney first played as Liverpool Schoolboys for Everton F.C. at the tender age of ten. He turned pro when he was 17 and made his debut for the England national team.

Rooney joined the Manchester United in the 2004 summer for a whooping £25.6 million contract. Rooney’s career highlights in football include three Premier League championships– 2007-08 UEFA Champions League and two League Cups. His overall career stats of 67 international caps and 26 goals so far.

Rooney is married to Coleen McLoughlin Rooney. Recently, he has made tabloid headlines when he admitted to soliciting prostitution in Liverpool back  in 2004.
