Portia De Rossi Takes Ellen DeGeneres’ Name – A judge from the Los Angeles Superior Court has granted the former Arrested Development star’s request to change her name to that of Ellen DeGeneres. The US actress Portia de Rossi has officially taken the last name of her long-time partner, Ellen DeGeneres.
The Australian-born actress asked for the name change last month. However, neither woman attended the court hearing. In a statement, the new Mrs. DeGeneres said “I am thrilled to legally adopt my wife’s name. I will continue to use Portia de Rossi for professional purposes.”
On Thursday, the chat show host Ellen DeGeneres joked on her Twitter account: “The court has granted Portia’s name change. She’s now officially Portia Winfrey.”
Portia de Rossi, 37-year-old, will now be legally known as Portia Lee James DeGeneres. She is an open lesbian. She was married to Mel Metcalfe, a documentary filmmaker, from 1996 to 1999. She became engaged to Ellen DeGeneres after the talk show host proposed to her with a three-carat pink diamond ring.
The couple started dating in 2004 and then married in August of 2008 at their Beverly Hills home, with 19 guests including their respective mothers. The pair tied knot during a five-month window in which gay marriage was legal in California.
