Stephen Garcia helped South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier win one of the biggest games for the Gamecocks.
Garcia completed 17 of 20 passes for 201 yards, threw three touchdown passes and one interception to lift No. 19 South Carolina in an upset win over No. 1 Alabama, 35-21, on Saturday. All three touchdown passes by Garcia came in the first half. Alshon Jeffrey received two while Marcus Lattimore caught one of Garcia’s touchdown passes that put the Gamecocks out of reach at halftime, 21-9.
The Alabama Crimson Tide scored just a single touchdown in the first half on Greg McElroy’s pass to Julio Jones for a 9-yard touchdown. For the rest of the game, the Tide added two field goals by Jeremy Shelley.
Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson, perhaps currently the best tailback duo, were limited by the Gamecocks defense. McElroy threw a career-high 315 yards but the Gamecocks defense sacked him seven times.
Stephen Garcia dominated the first half, while the second half belonged to Marcus Lattimore. Lattimore picked up momentum from his first half touchdown. Lattimore scored two touchdowns in the second half that more than negated a touchdown pass by Greg McElroy for the Tide.
Lattimore made three touchdowns and ran 93 yards on 23 carries. Jeffrey caught seven passes for 127 yards with touchdown catches of 26 and 15 yards.
