Held at the new US$1.6 billion, 82,500-seat Meadowsland Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, New York Giants won the football match as they beat New York Jets in a final score of 31-16.
New York Jets took the early lead against New York Giants in the first quarter by scoring 10-7. That lead was maintained in the second quarter as both team scored 3 points each pushing the score to 13-10 at the end of the second quarter.
An unexpected moment happened in the second quarter when Eli Manning of the New York Giants suffered a bloody, 3-inch gash to the left side of his head. It happened when he collided with Giants running back Brandon Jacobs. His helmet came off as he was hit from behind by New York Jets linebacker Calvin Pace. His head was snapped back and then got caught on the facemask of New York Jets safety Jim Leonhard as it came forward. He then needed 12 stitches to close the cut.
During the third quarter, New York Giants stole the lead from New York Jets as they scored 4 more points ending the quarter to scores of 17-16. New York Giants did not allow the New York Jets to score and they continued the lead in the fourth quarter scoring 14 more additional goals ending the whole match at a final score of 31-16.
