Shane Mosley is one of the best pound-for-pound boxers of his time. Sugar Shane has won world boxing titles in three weight classes and has fought with the best, earning him a 46-6-1 No-contest record with 39 knockouts. At 39 years old, his accomplishments make him hall of fame material and he is still active in the sport on top of being a business partner at Golden Boy Promotions. Following knockout wins over Ricardo Mayorga and Antonio Margarito, Mosley came close to knocking down Floyd Mayweather Jr. but eventually lost by unanimous decision, showing signs of aging.
Sergio Mora on the other hand gained some ground as a professional boxer by winning the reality TV boxing show “The Contender”. The 29-year old Mora, who is also known as the Latin Snake, totes a 22-1-1 record. He won the WBC Light Middleweight belt from the late Vernon Forrest but he quickly lost it to Forrest in their rematch. Despite showing just a lone loss to an excellent boxer, he has not gained the respect due him. This is probably due in part to the competition he has faced. He had an opportunity to fight Jermain Taylor but he turned it down. His planned fight with Kelly Pavlik did not happen due to an injury suffered by Pavlik.
The former champs meet in the main event of a non-title bout at the Staples Center in Los Angeles CA on Saturday via HBO pay-per-view. It is a significant fight for both Mosley and Mora. Mosley wants to prove that he is not washed up while Mexican-American Mora seeks respect at a time that is special for him, the Bicentennial of Mexican Independence.
