The picture may be good to look at but it can cause serious calamity in Iceland. A volcano has just erupted under the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier. The lava that the volcano has been sprouting out has already created a hole and eventually rivers will rise in no time. Evacuation has started at around 2:00 am (10 p.m. ET Tuesday). Fortunately, all potential victims are now safe, this is according to Rognvaldur Olafsson, chief inspector at Iceland’s Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management.
The biggest concern of the authorities is not the lava per se, but the flood that it may cause. As the lava move out and melts the ice, rivers will rise thus causing devastating flood.
There has been a recorded seismic activity of between 1 and 2 magnitude in the area around the glacier Wednesday morning according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
