It’s Official: Wyclef Jean is Running for President of Haiti

Wyclef Jean has filed the paperwork on Thursday to officially run for president of Haiti. His supporters cheered on as he arrived by motorcade at an electoral office in Haiti’s capital city which is still largely in ruins from the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake.

“It’s a moment in time and in history, according to Jean as he went to hand in his candidacy papers, 10 minutes before the office closed. “It’s very emotional.”

The elected president in the upcoming November 28 election will preside over the billions in international aid Haiti received to rebuild the country after the earthquake, which killed an estimated 300,000 people and destroyed thousands of buildings, including mostly government ministries.

Jean was born on the outskirts of the Port-au-Prince but left the country with his family when he was nine years old and grew up in Brooklyn. He gained fame as a member of the Fugees and went on to have a successful solo career.

Prior to filing his candidacy, he stepped down as leader of Yele Haiti, which is facing criticism for alleged financial improprieties.
