UFC 118 at the TD Garden in Boston has for its main card four of the supposed best UFC lightweights. The main event features Frankie Edgar defending his lightweight crown against BJ Penn. A co-main event has boxing and mixed martial arts represented by heavyweight boxer James Toney and UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture resepectively.
In another lightweight match, Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard faced off for top contender spot. The winner gets a chance to challenge the winner of the Edgar-Penn rematch in the future. I had Florian as the favorite based on his well-rounded skills. Maynard comes off as a boring fighter using mostly wrestling to secure wins. Maynard is undefeated with 11 wins (8-0 in the UFC) but has not won many fans.
The Florian-Maynard ended up with a unanimous decision win for Maynard, using his superior wrestling to control the match. This is another disappointing loss for Florian as he has lost all the important fights in his career.
Diego Sanchez beat Florian in The Ultimate Fighter finale. Florian then worked on his game and was given two title shots with Sean Sherk and BJ Penn which he also botched. His first fight in his hometown and a chance for another title shot ended up being a bust as well. Florian will have to climb back to earn another title shot.
As for Maynard, he may have to wait for the winner of the rematch. Facing BJ Penn could be more difficult since he has already defeated Frankie Edgar in the past at the Ultimate Fight Night 13.
