Robert Edwards Won The Nobel Prize for Medicine

The Nobel Foundation has announced on Monday this year’s recipient of the Nobel Prize for medicine.  Robert G. Edwards,  famous for his “test tube baby” creation, was given the prestigious award. The awards committee had previously shortlisted the nominees and came down to Edwards on Monday at the Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute around 11:00 a.m.

Robert Geoffrey Edwards is a British physiologist who pioneered in the reproductive medicine. Edwards was born on September 27, 1925 in Leeds. As a teen, he attended the Manchester Central High School. Edwards then joined the British Army. Subsequently, he attended the University of Wales Bangor with a degree in agriculture. The 85 years old physiologist obtained his PhD in 1955 at the Institute of Animal Genetics, University of Edinburgh.

In 1963  Edwards joined the team of scientist at the University of Cambridge, where he spent the rest of his professional life. His initial success came in 1968, fertilizing a human egg in a laboratory. Soon, he began to collaborate with a gynecologic surgeon from Oldham named Patrick Steptoe.

July 25, 1978, the two made history with their “Test Tube Baby”. Their lifelong work on In-Vitro-Fertilization (IVF) finally gave birth to baby Louise Joy Brown. The world’s first test tube baby arrived at 11:47 p.m. at the Oldham General Hospital.

In 2001, the Lasker Foundation bestowed the Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award to Robert Edwards. He was  commended for the development of in vitro fertilization, a medical advancement that has revolutionized the field of science particularly human fertilization. In 2007, The Daily Telegraph named Edwards the 26th greatest living geniuses out of the 100 in the list.

Edwards and Steptoe’s contribution is considered a  “miracle” by some people, especially for infertile couples. For spouses who once thought of having no chances producing a baby of their own , Edwards and Steptoe’s scientific breakthrough opens a new door for them. It was estimated that about 1.5 million babies have been born through IVF in 2004.

Last year, three researchers were named winners of the Nobel Prize for Medicine.  Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak, American researchers, shared the $1.4 million prize money. Their work revolves around chromosomes and their findings  shed light on human aging and diseases, including cancer.

Started in 1895 from an idea by Swedish Chemist Alfred Nobel, inventor of dynamite, the Nobel Prize is an annual international awards bestowed by the Nobel foundation to people who has made a difference in the field of natural science, literature, and social science.  Each recipient or laureate receives a gold medal, a diploma, and a sum of money.

Last year’s winners were:

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas Steitz, and Ada Yonath for Chemistry.

Charles K. Kao for Physics

Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith for Physics.

Elinor Ostrom and Oliver E. Williamson for the Prize in Economics.  Ostrom was the first woman to receive the Economics Prize.

Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider, and Jack W. Szostak for medicine.

Herta Muller for Literature.

US President Barack Obama for Peace Prize. He was awarded “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

How to Boil Easter Eggs: Q & A on How Long Do You Boil an Egg to Become Hard Boiled

Happy Easter! Today, we celebrate Jesus Christ’s ressurection from the dead and His ascension to Heaven called Easter Sunday.

During Easter Sunday celebration, Easter Egg Hunt is a major activity. In preparation of that activity, people are searching on how to boil hard boiled eggs. People want to learn how to long do you boil an egg to become hard boiled for use in their meals as well as for Easter Egg Hunt activity for  Easter Sunday.

Boiling eggs is really simple. You just need to know how long you should boil the eggs in order to be cooked “hard boil”. Eggs are one of my favorite breakfast and boiling an egg to become hard boiled only takes a maximum of 10 minutes.

For instructions on how to boil eggs, you just need to take a pot. Fill in with sufficient water to boil the eggs. The higher the number of eggs to boil, the higher the amount of water that should be added. Do not overboil the eggs as this will cause some cracks which will not be good for Easter Egg hunt on Easter Sunday.

After having boiled for about 10 minutes, take them out using tongs, dry and cool them first before decorating it for Easter Egg hunt. For Easter Egg Hunt ideas, you can go here.

Again, Happy Easter!

The Social Network Rules the Box Office

Facebook seems to have dominated not just the internet but the Box Office as well.  David Fincher’s “The Social Network”, depicting the story behind the ever so popular Facebook, is faring pretty well with $23 million on its first weekend.

The PG-13 movie is expected to generate more sales in the coming weeks with all the raves gotten from critics and audiences as well.  According to an exit pollster site, audiences rate the movie with a generous B+ which would definitely attract more viewers.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, Social Network shows the origin of Facebook. The film was adapted from Ben Mezrich’s The Accidental Billionaires, where Eduardo Severin, Zuckerberg’s bestfriend, was a consultant. The movie production proceeded without any involvement from the Facebook team.

Written by Aaron Sorkin, Social Network dramatized the bittersweet life of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg during his Harvard years when Facebook was at its inception. The movie initially takes viewers into the life of  Zuckerberg as the lonely teenager and then as the creator of the viral hit Facebook.

The movie has been getting great reviews so far. According to the website the rottentomatoes, The Social Network is “impeccably scripted, beautifully directed, and filled with fine performances. The Social Network is a riveting, ambitious example of modern filmmaking at its finest.” Renowned critic Scott Foundas applauded the film with is moral complexity. So far, everyone, is amused with the film. Everyone except Zuckerberg. It was reported that in a conference he attended, the host had told Zuckerberg she knew how unhappy he was to which he replied “I just wished that nobody made a movie of me while i was still alive.”

The ensemble cast includes Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin, Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker, Brenda Song as Christy Lee, Rooney Mara as Erica Albright, Armie Hammer as Winklevoss twins, and Max Minghell as Divya Narendra.

Meanwhile, fellow box office wide release “Let Me In” and “Case 39” was a let down with mere $5.3 million landing seventh and eight place respectively. While critics gave a brilliant score for the remake of the Swedish film, “Let Me In” did not connect well with audiences. “Case 39” did better with audience impact.

Zack Snyder’s “Legend of the Guardians” turns out to be a box office surprise as the owl movie finish second in its second weekend.  Sales fell only 33 percent. Its cume now stand to $30 million.

Previous Box Office topper “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” dipped as competition from “Social Network” enters. The Oliver Stone-directed drama has cume at $35.9 million for its first 10 days in wide release.

Ben Affleck’s Boston-set drama, “The Town” performs well. The film has now $64.3 million gross and fell only 36 percent in its third weekend. “Easy A” seems to be holding strong with a cume of $42.4 million.  Finishing sixth, “You again” brought in $5.6 million this weekend.

M.Night Shyamalan’s “Devil” landed ninth with gross of $3.7 million. The movie has now a total of $27.4 million in its three weekend release.

Verizon To Give $90 million Refund to Customers

Customers has been the most important people for Verizon Inc. and they just wanted to maintain their good relationship with them. There has been numerous complaints by customers for the past 3 years that they were charged with data services that they didn’t use at all. It has alarmed the Federal Communications Commission and right now Verizon Wireless will be solving it by giving out refunds.

It would refund more than $50 million to about 15 million customers nationwide who were mistakenly charged for data usage or Internet access they didn’t order. That would be mean that most of them will receive $2 to $6 each. Current customers will receive credits on monthly bills. Former customers will get checks in the mail. Those receiving refunds will be notified starting this month and this November.

Customers were automatically charged $1.99 every month for data services that they didn’t use. Some were charged for those free demo versions of the apps in their phone. Others were charged for accessing the Internet, even if users did so by mistakenly hitting a button and backing out of the service right away. Customers claimed that they were reporting the problem to the company but Verizon Wireless has been ignoring them. They refused to block the data services as well as refused to reverse the charges.

The refund is just one of the steps that Verizon Wireless has to take. F.C.C. would ensure that this thing will not happen again. They were trying to pressed how long the company has been aware of the existence of the problem and see whether they would initiate a Notice of Apparent Liability, as formal enforcement charges are known.

The settlement talks between the FCC and Verizon Wireless has come up with an alternative to the formal enforcement wherein they could enter into a consent decree, the company would neither admit nor deny the charges, but would agree to make a voluntary payment to settle the issue.

Similac Formula Recalled by Abbott Laboratories this 2010

Abbott Laboratories issued a voluntary recall of their Similac infant formula after investigations reveal that it was contaminated with insect parts which could be harmful to those infants who will consume it.

The recall could possibly affect up to 5 million Similac infant formulas sold in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean which includes certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers and in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans. Accordingly, the lot numbers of Similac infant formula included in the recall are listed in a 38-page PDF File which you can download HERE.

However, please be aware that Abbott liquid formula is not at all part of the Similac recall. Below is an illustration on how can you see the Similac lot numbers in your formula products:

Abbott Laboratories mentioned that affected Similac containers could contain small parts of the insect beetle or its larvae which could cause gastrointestinal problems to infants resulting to refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. Further investigations revealed that the recalled Similac infant formula products were manufactured in their Michigan plant.

To find out if the Similac infant formula that you bought is included in the recall, Abbott Laboratories advised their consumers to go to Similac Recall Lot Numbers Look Up and type in the lot number of their Similac products. Alternatively, since the site is quite down as of now as it is experiencing tremendous amount of traffic, consumers are advised to directly call the help line of Abbott Laboratories for their Similac recall inquiries at (800) 986-8850. If you cannot get through with that number, here are some of the alternate numbers to call: (800) 545-5216; (800) 515-7677; (800) 986-8800; (847) 937-6100; (847) 935-8865; (847) 935-3456.

Druidry recognized as religion in the United Kingdom

The government of UK received an applause from the Hindus around the world for giving official recognition to Druidry as a religion. This is known to be one of the oldest religions of the isles.

Rajan Zed, Hindu statesman , said that all religions were different ways to relate to the Divine, different responses to the Reality and were a positive sign of God’s generosity.

Zed added that a more inclusive understanding of religion was needed and we should learn to live together with mutual loyalty despite our seriously different faiths. He urged world religious leaders to leave behind selfish motives and work together for greater ideals.

Rajan Zed argued that recognition for Druidry should have come much earlier as Druidry, one of the earliest known spiritual traditions of United Kingdom, had been reportedly practiced in the area for thousands of years, much before the arrival of other religions.

The decision by Charity Commission for England and Wales means that Druidry will enjoy the status of a genuine faith. Board Members were satisfied that “there is sufficient belief in a supreme being or entity to constitute a religion”.

Consideration of the various characteristics of a religion by the Commission include: belief in a supreme being or entity; worship of, reverence for or veneration of the supreme being or entity; cogency, cohesion, seriousness and importance in the belief system; an identifiable positive, beneficial, moral or ethical framework promoted by the belief system.

The Charity Commission registers and regulates charities in England and Wales. Dame Suzi Leather is Chair of its Board.

Definition and practice of Druidry as given in registration application includes: Druidry was the native spiritual tradition of the peoples who inhabited the islands of Britain and Ireland, spreading through much of Europe. As an ancient pagan religion, Druidry is based on the reverential, sacred and honourable relationship between the people and the land. Druidic practice is based on honour for the ancestors. And lastly, All life is deemed to be unconditionally sacred.

Zed appeals for sincere re-look at non-violence on “International Day of Non-Violence”

World needed to sincerely re-look at non-violence, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed stated in his message for “International Day of Non-Violence” marked by United Nations on peace icon Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday which falls on October two.

Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out that non-violence was held as one of the greatest virtues in Hinduism and expressed the sacredness of life. Let us take a vow on this day to lead our lives without hurting others, Zed added in his statement issued in Nevada (USA) today.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was one of the few men in history to fight simultaneously on moral, religious, political, social, economic, and cultural fronts. He is held in high esteem globally for his philosophy of non-violence, his commitment to world peace, and his work for the upliftment of the downtrodden.

We’ve Got Our Eye on QB’s in Second Week as Starters

Those engaged in NFL betting have to be keenly aware of who is at the trigger of the league’s offenses; several QB’s made their season debut last Sunday, and we’ve got our eye on them as they move into their second week as starters. Sometimes it’s a flash in the pan, but sometimes it’s also the kind of spark that can ignite an offense. Three of these guys will be at the helm of NFL betting underdogs this weekend.

Charlie Batch did a great job for the Steelers against the Bucs, which confounded many NFL bettors, including myself. he went 17 for 28 for 211 yards a three touchdowns, though we should note that he threw a pair of interceptions. He got the nod to start again on Sunday against Baltimore. Mike Tomlin said, “We won last week. That’s a good place to start.” Yup. Batch will warm the seat until Ben Roethlisberger returns from his four-game suspension, and he was chosen for that ahead of Brian Leftwich. The Steelers are 1.5-point NFL betting favorites over Baltimore this Sunday.

Ryan Fitzpatrick seemed to light a fire under the Buffalo offense, hitting 20 of 28 passes for 247 yards. That was good for a 92.4 quarterback rating, which is better than he chalked up the last couple of seasons (70.0 and 69.7) for the Bengals and Bills. You have to remember that Fitzpatrick was not unfamiliar with being Buffalo’s starter; he threw 227 passes last year, with nine TD’s. When the Bills’ training camp began, there was supposed to be a battle between Fitzpatrick and Trent Edwards for the starting job, but it was more or less given to Edwards. Chan Gailey must have seen that as a mistake during the opener against Miami, and he liked what he saw out of the Harvard guy against New England. So did some of the players. “He did a great job out there operating the offense and keeping the defense off the field,” rookie C.J. Spiller told the Boston Globe.

Gailey obviously seems confident enough in Fitzpatrick (he’s also got Brian Brohm on the roster) that he placed Trent Edwards on waivers rather than wait around and try to make a trade for him. There was intense interest in Edwards, and it seemed rather coincidental. It came from the Jets (laying 5.5 points to the Bills in NFL betting this week) and Jaguars, who happen to be Buffalo’s next two opponents. Jacksonville won out, and they’ll get the benefit of Edwards’ insight before they play the Bills. that kind of thing goes around in the NFL.

Bruce Gradkowski completed just half his passes, but helped to keep the Raiders in the game and with a chance to win. His was probably the strangest quarterback change of last week, since Oakland was so excited about acquiring Jason Campbell in the off-season. But the Toledo alum is known among the players as someone who brings some energy into the huddle, something he demonstrated last year when subbing for JaMarcus Russell, who was benched. The Raiders are a three-point home underdog in NFL betting as the Texans come to town. Houston is giving up more than nine yards a pass attempt, so a lot of people are using Gradkowski in their fantasy leagues.

BMW and Rolls-Royce Recall

High-end automaker, BMW has issued a recall notice for 198,000 of its 2002–10 vehicles with V-8 and V-12 engines, as well as some Rolls-Royce models. The recall attributed to a problem with the vehicle’s braking system.

Last Thursday, BMW told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that in rare circumstances “a check valve of the brake vacuum pump may leak a small amount of lubricating oil. Over time this could result in the contamination of the brake booster. If this occurred, the power-assist braking could be affected.”

But, according to the automaker, “mechanical braking” would still effectively stop the vehicle.

BMW said it has not received reports of accidents or injuries because of the braking problem so it has deemed the recall as “voluntary”. However, they were left with no other option but to recall vehicles once it is clear that a safety defect exists.

The recalled models are:

• 2002-8 BMW 745i/Li, 750i/Li, and 760i/Li
• 2007-8 BMW Alpina B7
• 2004-10 BMW 645i and 650i
• 2004-10 BMW 545i and 550i
• 2003–10 Rolls-Royce Phantom
