Michael Douglas: “You Can Give Me a Hug”

At the end of his candid interview with David Letterman, stage four cancer-stricken Michael Douglas told Letterman, “You can give me a hug”, in response to the host’s statement that, “I feel like I wanna do something for you Can I do something for you?”

(Indeed, I personally would want to give him a hug, if only I could, but I guess I will have to “settle” for just praying for him and his speedy recovery.)

Douglas, who was diagnosed with stage four throat cancer on August 16, was still upbeat, honest and in good spirits during his appearance on Letterman’s show considering that he has just completed his first week of intense chemotherapy and radiation.

According to him, the odds are in his favor with an 80 percent or better chance of recovery. Add to this the positive news that his cancer remains above the neck.

Douglas will soon be seen in the hotly anticipated sequel to Wall Street  – “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”.

Ping on iTunes 10, Apple’s Social Network

Ping on iTunes 10, Apple’s Social Network – One of the topics discussed by Steve Jobs in the recent Apple announcement at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco California is about the developments on the newest version of iTunes, the iTunes 10 with its newest feature, Apple’s Ping.

Ping is the iTunes-only social network that allows users to follow and unfollow friends much like that of Twitter and share information about music purchases, preferences and concerts. Each participating music artist has a ping profile and fans can easily follow them through it to get updated on their latest songs, concerts, etc.

With the introduction of Ping, Apple is moving towards the trend of social media and social networking in general. It will allow Apple to be more interconnected with its existing users to share music information, and ultimately drive more music sales through iTunes via recommendations. However, Ping’s limitation currently is that posts to Ping won’t appear on social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter or vice-versa which will likely limit Ping’s perceived utility, sustained usage, and reach. As an Apple user, what do you think of Ping?

Ferrari Recalls 458 Italia Cars

Ferrari Recalls 458 Italia Cars – After reports of a number of luxury cars catching fire,Ferrari has decided to recall all of the 458 Italia cars it made this year.

Ferrari said its engineers had flown around the globe to investigate five reports of “thermal incidents.” As a result of this, it will be asking the owners of more than 1,200 of the supercars to bring them in for modification work.

Ferrari said the problem had been traced to adhesive used in the wheel-arch assemblies. According to a spokesman, in specified circumstances, the glue can start to overheat, smoke and even catch fire. However in extreme cases, the melting of the adhesive can lead the heat shield, which is the liner that protects the engine, to deform and move closer to the exhaust, and in the end causing the lining to catch fire.

The 458 Italia cars typically costs about $260,000 (£170,000). There were reported thermal incidents in California, Paris, Switzerland, China and one other unnamed location.

The company also said the owners who first reported the fires will now receive a new model. While for the rest of the owners, their cars will be modified to replace the adhesive with mechanical fasteners.

Ferrari has launched an investigation last month after pictures proposing to show 458 models on fire or burnt out emerged.

Greyson Michael Chance Sings “Paparazzi” of Lady Gaga Video

The 12-year old, 6th grade boy wonder, Greyson Michael Chance, sang Paparazzi of Lady Gaga during their recital in school. His Youtube video of this performance has already hit more than 1 million views. He became the latest sensation now in the world wide wide. During their recital, the emcee has told everyone that Chance could “teach Lady Gaga a lesson.”

“I am very inspired by Lady Gaga and Augustana. Lady Gaga is a freak but she has so much talent and her style of music is what I would like mine to be when im older. Augustana is one of the most underated bands I think ever to step the planet. They have so much talent it is not funny. They have such a good concept with folk and rock. It is very sad that they are so unknown.” Chance explained.

Here is a video of Greyson Michael Chance’s rendition of “Paparazzi”:

Lindsay Lohan vs. Michael Lohan

There is just no love lost between estranged father and daughter, Michael and Linday Lohan, respectively. While it seems that Michael is the only voice of reason in Lindsay’s life after that interview of Dina Lohan who appeared to be needing a reality check, Lindsay has slapped him with a cease and desist “request” through her attorney.

The object their legal bickering these days are some personal diaries allegedly written by Lindsay during her stint at the Cirque Lodge Rehabilitation Center in Utah in 2007.

According to Lindsay’s cease and desist request, Michael was trying to sell the said diaries which Lindsay did not even know was in his possession.

In the document sent to Michael’s legal representative Lisa Bloom on August 23, the actress warns she will seek damages for ‘grave invasion of privacy’ if her father sells any of her personal belongings.

Tsk, tsk… no love lost I tell you. And for Michael, if he indeed tried to sell his daughter’s personal diaries – appalling.

Hostage-taker James Jay Lee Disliked Discovery Channel Programming

Should all network channels take note? This is what’s running in my mind after finding out that the latest hostage-taker, James Jay Lee, resorted to such a drastic move of taking on hostages and strapping explosives on his body apparently because he did not like Discovery Channel’s programming.

The gunman, who the police shot to death, said he hated the company’s shows such as “Kate Plus 8” (because the show promotes population growth) and its environmental programming (because it did little to save the planet).

The three hostages, two of them Discovery Communications employees and a security guard, escaped unhurt after the four-hour standoff on Wednesday in Silver Spring, Md.

Police said the gunman burst into the building about 1p.m. and took the hostages in the lobby on the first floor. Aside from a hand-gun, an explosive device was strapped on his body which detonated when police shot him.

Police are trying to determine whether two boxes and two backpacks the gunman had also contained explosives. The authorities later sent in a robot to disarm a device on the gunman’s body.

Muslim-Americans Launch PR Initiative

Muslim-Americans Launch PR Initiative – Amidst the growing opposition of establishing the National Islamic Center a few blocks from Ground Zero of the World Trade Center, Muslim-Americans launched a PR initiative which will promote September 11 as a national day of service.

A national CBS poll last month showed that 40 percent of Americans views Muslims and Islam negatively and more than 70 percent of the respondents said that building a mosque near Ground Zero should not be done.

In order to change the views of fellow Americans, grassroots Muslim groups are launching a series of initiatives to promote to non-Muslim-Americans they they are like them, Americans. The initiatives is headed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

CAIR had recently released a series of advertisements that will run on national television in order to counter some of the issues over the proposed mosque near 9/11 Ground Zero. One of the video shows a New York firefighter who was one of the first responders to the Sept. 11 attack and talks about how he lose a love one and then at the end said that he is a Muslim.

Here is one of the Muslim-American PR initiative released by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Team USA Beats Iran, Earns Top Seed In FIBA World Championship 2010

Team USA just played basketball without worrying about any political agenda on Wednesday. Their recent win against Iran just put them at top spot in Group B with just a game against winless Tunisia left before the knockout rounds.

The United States and Iran set aside political tension between their countries by playing clean basketball that resulted to an expected win for Team USA, 88-51. Perhaps the most physical part of the game involved some playful banging between Memphis Grizzlies teammates Rudy Gay of the US and Iranian center Hamed Haddadi.

Unlike in their previous game against Brazil wherein the starters worked real hard for a 70-68 squeaker, the reserves played better this time as they did a clinical demolition of the Asian champions using their advantage in athletic abilities.

Kevin Love, Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose led scorers on the American side with 13, 12 and 11 points respectively while Hamed Haddadi paced Iran with 19 points.

The United States will need more contributions from their bench to make it deeper into the medal rounds. Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose have been the more consistent performers so far but they need more players to step up.
