99ers Held Successful Rally for Tier 5 Unemployment Extension

Unemployment Extension: 99ers Held Successful Rally for Tier 5 Unemployment Extension – The much awaited first rally of the 99ers to call the attention of Congress for a Tier 5 unemployment extension bill was successful. It was held last Wednesday, August 12, 2010 at the Federal Hall, 26 Wall St., New York City from 12pm to 1pm. Ed Scultz and other media covered it.

Dubbed as “Keep the American Dream Alive Tier Five!”, it was attended by groups of 99ers demanding for the passage of a Tier 5 unemployment extension bill. “A man without a job is like a man that does not exist,” said 99er Rubin Edwards, 48, of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, who came to the rally dressed in a suit and tie. “I hope and pray for my future in America today.”

Currently, there are two Tier 5 unemployment extension bills being proposed. The first one comes from the Senate introduced by Senator Debbie Stabenow which provides 20 additional weeks of unemployment insurance for individuals in states with unemployment rates of above 7.5% and a one-year extension of two tax credits for businesses that hire unemployed workers.

The second one comes from the House of Representatives introduced by Rep. Shelley Berkley from Nevada aiming to provide an additional 20 weeks of unemployment benefits but only for those states with unemployment rates of 10 percent or higher.

Was the 99ers rally “successful” enough to call the attention of the Congress? The Congress is set to reconvene on September 13 after their recess. But will any of the two Tier 5 unemployment extension bills be tackled? According to an article in Open Congress, Senator Schumer said the Senate in September will focus on a bill to promote small businesses, a child nutrition bill, a tax-credit bill for companies and possibly a vote on the Bush-era tax cuts or the START arms treaty between the United States and Russia.

Having said that, there’s still no urgency committed to the 99ers in passing the Tier 5 unemployment extension bill. Below is a video of the rally of the 99ers calling for a Tier 5 unemployment extension bill.

Apple Manager Alleged for $1 Million Kickback

Apple’s global manager Paul Shin Devine was arrested for alleged $1M in kickbacks. He has been using his position at Apple to acquire various bits of confidential information about the company and eventually sell this information to more than a half-dozen Apple suppliers thus getting huge payments for this. Suppliers would then be able to better position themselves to bid for and receive Apple contracts.

He is now currently facing twenty-three counts of a federal grand jury indictment. In addition to that, a separate civil suit was files against him by Apple for accepting more than $1 million in bribes and kickbacks from countries including China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore. Another person involved who receive the same charges is Andrew Ang of Singapore who has been his partner in doing such thing. Devine has opened foreign bank accounts in his wife’s name to disguise payments.

Apple’s spokesperson released a statement saying: “Apple is committed to the highest ethical standards in the way we do business. We have zero tolerance for dishonest behavior inside or outside the company.”

The US Marshals held Devine in custody who awaits a 1:30 p.m. court appearance this coming Monday in the U.S. Northern District Court in San Jose.

All other companies involved in the indictment were not yet named but they were believed to be part of the in supplying materials for Apple’s iPods and iPhones.

Ana Ivanovic Withdraws As Kim Clijsters Advances To Cincinnati Open Finals

Ana Ivanovic was forced to withdraw from her Cincinnati Open semi-final match with Kim Clijsters. As a result, Kim Clijsters advances to the finals waiting for the winner of the other semi-final match between Maria Sharapova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Ivanovic could not continue with a left foot injury in the opening set. She twisted her left foot in the first set and it became apparent when she could not return a serve. Taping the injured foot did not help much as Ivanovic winced in pain.

This is not the first time that the former number one player is injured this season. A right shoulder injury early in the season caused a major setback as she has not reached any final match this year. She was ranked number 62 at the Cincinnati Open.

For Clijsters, this would be the second time that she is making a tennis comeback through the Cincinnati Open in two years. Her first one was after her two-year break from the game to so she could start off with her own family. This time Clisjters is coming off a break from Wimbledon.

$45 Worth Of Garage Sale Item Turns Out To Be A $200M Worth Of Ansel Adams Missing Creations

In his search for antiques at a garage sale, Rick Norsigian bought two small boxes ten years ago that cost him $45-price haggled down from $70 -are now estimated to be worth at least $200 million.

The boxes contained 65 glass negatives owned and created by Ansel Adams, the Father of American Photography in the early period of his career.

It was believed that these negatives were destroyed more than seven decades ago in a dark room fire that ruined 5,000 plates.

According to David W. Streets, a Beverly Hills art appraiser,”It truly is a missing link of Ansel Adams and history and his career.”

“The photographs apparently were taken between 1919 and the early 1930s, well before Adams — who is known as the father of American photography — became nationally recognized in the 1940s, Streets said.

“This is going to show the world the evolution of his eye, of his talent, of his skill, his gift, but also his legacy,” Streets said. “And it’s a portion that we thought had been destroyed in the studio fire.”
The garage sale proprietor where Norsigian bought the pieces, originally bought the boxes in 1940’sin a warehouse salvage in Los Angeles.

Patrick Alt, expert in photography had helped confirmed the authenticity of the negatives found infers that Adams may have carried those pieces for his photography class during 1940’s.

“It is my belief that he brought these negatives with him for teaching purposes and to show students how to not let their negatives be engulfed in a fire,” Alt said.

“I think this clearly explains the range of work in these negatives, from very early pictorialist boat pictures, to images not as successful, to images of the highest level of his work during this time period.”

According to CNN report, the plates were wrapped individually in newspaper inside a nearly ruined manila envelopes. Notations on each envelope appeared to have been made by Virginia Adams, the photographer’s wife, according to handwriting experts Michael Nattenberg and Marcel Matley. Both compared them to samples provided by the Adams’ grandson.

While most of the negatives appear never to have been printed, several are nearly identical to well-known Adams prints, the experts said.

Meteorologist George Wright studied clouds and snow cover in a Norsigian negative to conclude that it was taken at about the same time as a known Adams photo of a Yosemite tree.

“The fact that these locations were well-known to Adams, and visited by him, further supports the proposition that all of the images in the collection were most probably created by Adams,” said art expert Robert Moeller.
Moeller said that after six months of study, he concluded “with a high degree of probability, that the images under consideration were produced by Ansel Adams.

“Silver tarnishing on the negatives also helped date the plates to around the 1920s, Alt said.

“I have sent people to prison for the rest of their lives for far less evidence than I have seen in this case,” said evidence and burden of proof expert Manny Medrano, who was hired by Norsigian to help authenticate them. “In my view, those photographs were done by Ansel Adams.”

Norsigian, after a decade of keeping an unlikely piece of wealth is now ready to cash in by turning over the pieces to museums and collectors

“I have estimated that his $45 investment easily could be worth up to $200 million,” Streets said.

And speaking of garage sales and storage boxes, did you know that cheaper moving boxes are found online ?

I Write Like… David Foster Wallace

I tried this new tool that has been causing a major buzz on the internet for the last couple of days, “I Write Like”. I pasted a whole blog entry in the box (but you can choose to paste just a few paragraphs) clicked submit and the result said I write like David Foster Wallace.

Cool! But who is David Foster Wallace? Let me google him up before anyone stones me to death for being such a literary ignoramus. Hey, I read a different genre of books… more on the self-help and finance related titles. Think Suze Orman, Robert Kiyosaki and Rhonda Byrne type of books.

Anyway, I checked out the other blog entries of people who have tried their hand with the I Write Like “analyzer” and I did find one who was clever enough to post writings of well-known authors just to see if the analyzer will be accurate enough to identify them based on their own writings. Makes a lot of sense doesn’t it?

Based on this blogger’s experiment, I Write Like correctly identified 14 of 30 classic authors, thus giving it an accuracy rating of (only) 47%.

So much for all that buzz. Paul, the Psychic Octopus, had a far better batting average of 7 for 7… that’s a whopping 100%.

However, if you just want the simple joys of knowing (and believing) that you write like famous author, go and give I Write Like a try.

Bible Twitter: Translating a Bible Chapter into a Tweet

A devoted Christian named Chris Juby, who is 30 year old freelance web developer and director of worship at King’s church in Durham decided to convert the long chapter of the Bible into a 140 character tweet. Everyday he would tweet his own summary of the chapter. He started this mission last week and now on the chapter 7 of Genesis.

Juby has been using twitter just to update his life and his songs. He realized that majority of the population in this world has been very busy everyday yet still finds time to updated their social networking account such as Facebook and Twitter. To make his tweets useful, a Bible Chapter tweet would be the coolest thing to do.

“It is my normal habit to read a chapter of the Bible each morning and I always read through from Genesis to Revelation. As I was coming to the end last time, I thought I needed a way of focusing my mind a little bit more on what I was reading. I already use Twitter to comment on my life and music, so I thought I would share my summaries.”

You can follow his twitter account at twitter.com/biblesummary. Having this mission is quite inspiring, however it prevents an individual to have their own devotional wherein you really open the Bible and reflect on the chapters personally. Somehow, Juby serves as an inspiration .

New Hollywood Trend: Shape Up Before the Big Day

Chelsea Clinton did it, she had her father Bill do it, I think if Alicia Keys was not heavy with child when she recently marched down the aisle she would also do it and now it is Hilary Duff’s turn to buff up before her altar date.

As if lugging around a million dollar engagement ring is not enough of a workout, the soon to be Mrs. Comrie is said to be working out five times a week to ensure that she’d be stunningly beautiful on her wedding day. Oh Hilary, I know you will look breathtaking.

Well, aside from being a very good motivation to get a consistent workout, a wedding is also a major stress producer.  So, aesthetics or looking good in a wedding gown is really not the only reason to shape up. According to Ms. Duff’s trainer, Harley Pasternak, working out religiously when preparing for a wedding helps brides to calm any pre-wedding day jitters and wedding preparation stress.

Neil Patrick Harris Soon to Have to Twins

I wonder what Bill O’ Reilly will say about this latest piece of Hollywood news.

For those who did not get wind of the recent hullabaloo between Bill O’ Reilly and Jennifer Aniston, it had something to do about Ms. Aniston’s statement about not needing a father to have a baby in this day and age. She said, and we quote, “”women are realizing it more and more, knowing that they don’t have to settle with a man just to have that child.”

O’ Reilly retorted that this type of thinking was “destructive to our society” and that Jennifer Aniston is “diminishing the role of the dad.”

I wonder if O’ Reilly will be happy to hear that in Neil Patrick Harris’ future twins’ life there will be two dads – Neil and long-time beau, David Burtka.

According to E! News the multi-talented Harris and David Burtka, a chef and also an actor, are going to become the parents of twins this October —  via a beautiful surrogate.

Reports have been circulating since last year that Burtka and Harris had visited a surrogacy agency in L.A. to put their plans on expanding their family in motion. They couple have been together for about six years.
