A failed drug test after a championship fight at UFC 117 has caused a lot of issues. UFC Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen has just been suspended for one year and fined $2,500 by the California State Atheltic Commission for flunking drug tests after his UFC championship bout against Middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Sonnen admitted to taking performance-enhancing drugs to CSAC executive director George Dodd which resulted to the penalties.
Sonnen dominated Silva for most of the fight and was just two minutes away from taking the title belt from the Brazilian champion. Silva managed to salvage a submission victory with a triangle choke late in the fifth and final round. With Sonnen’s surprisingly impressive performance, Dana White decided an immediate rematch in January that could have been a more lucrative matchup.
Now that Sonnen is sidelined by the suspension, Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami are slated to fight for the top contender spot that stands to challenge Silva early next year. Belfort and Okami are headlining UFC 122 in November this year.
