Sherdog.com reported drug test results from the California State Athletic Commission that UFC Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen failed drug tests after his UFC 117 Middleweight title fight with Anderson Silva. It puts the UFC in a difficult situation given that Sonnen is scheduled for a rematch against the Brazilian champion.
It can be recalled that Chael Sonnen challenged UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 and dominated the champion for four and a half rounds until Silva locked a triangle choke that led to a submission win. Silva defended his title but left people surprised with how Sonnen got close to capturing the title from him.
Now that Sonnen was found to have taken drugs before their fight, he may be suspended for at least nine months. This means he may not be able to fight Silva again in early 2011.
Taking performance-enhancing drugs has been a common issue among athletes. Within the UFC, heavyweight contender Shane Carwin was allegedly involved with a steroids supplier as recently reported. Former UFC champs Sean Sherk and Josh Barnett have been suspended for steroids use too.
With Sonnen’s impending suspension, Vitor Belfort or Yushin Okami may have the next middleweight title shot next year after their eliminator this fall.
