Caroline Wozniacki did everything right on Monday to defeat Maria Sharapova, 6-3, 6-4, advancing to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows. Wozniacki needed an almost perfect game to frustrate 2006 U.S. Open champion Sharapova into committing unforced errors.
Wozniacki is last year’s U.S. Open runner-up, losing to Kim Clijsters in the finals. She is the tournament top-seed and she is certainly living up to expectations up to this point.
Maria Sharapova’s attempt at making it to the U.S. Open quarterfinals since winning the 2006 edition has come to an end with her loss to Wozniacki. Sharapova posed some challenges but her 36 unforced errors compared to 10 for Wozniacki did her in. Wozniacki showed more consistency while Sharapova tried to force winners that did not pay off.
Wozniacki next plays No. 45 Dominika Cubulkova, who won over No. 11 Svetlana Kuznetsova, 7-5, 7-6 (4) earlier in the day.
