BMW and Rolls-Royce Recall

High-end automaker, BMW has issued a recall notice for 198,000 of its 2002–10 vehicles with V-8 and V-12 engines, as well as some Rolls-Royce models. The recall attributed to a problem with the vehicle’s braking system.

Last Thursday, BMW told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that in rare circumstances “a check valve of the brake vacuum pump may leak a small amount of lubricating oil. Over time this could result in the contamination of the brake booster. If this occurred, the power-assist braking could be affected.”

But, according to the automaker, “mechanical braking” would still effectively stop the vehicle.

BMW said it has not received reports of accidents or injuries because of the braking problem so it has deemed the recall as “voluntary”. However, they were left with no other option but to recall vehicles once it is clear that a safety defect exists.

The recalled models are:

• 2002-8 BMW 745i/Li, 750i/Li, and 760i/Li
• 2007-8 BMW Alpina B7
• 2004-10 BMW 645i and 650i
• 2004-10 BMW 545i and 550i
• 2003–10 Rolls-Royce Phantom
