The Texas Rangers took Game 1 from the Tampa Bay Rays to lead 1-0 in their AL division series. Texas ace Cliff Lee delivered an impressive postseason performance against the talented Tampa Bay Rays to lead the Rangers to a 5-1 victory on Tuesday.
Lee pitched for seven solid innings that included 10 strikeouts and allowing just five hits overall. He retired 16 of 17 batters, putting the Rays in a dry spell until a late homer by Ben Zobrist in the seventh inning.
Jeff Francoeur doubled and Bengie Molina hit a single RBI that sparked a two-run second inning, 2-0.
Nelson Cruz hit a homered to deep center in the third for a 3-0 lead in what must have been a 440-foot hit. Molina, who was 2 of 4 for the game, hit another homer in the fourth to pad the lead at 4-0.
In the fifth inning, Vladimir Guerrero hit a run-scoring double to give the Rangers what seemed an insurmountable 5-0 lead, given Lee’s pitching.
Despite being slight underdogs, the Rangers stole a home game from the Rays and now have the momentum as they go into Game 2 on Thursday.
